The most likely use of oil by jewish temples are during hanukkah for their menorahs. Maintaining the lit flames for eight days, would likely use a fair amount of oil. More traditional temples may also use oil in their Ner Tamid; A light that represents the eternal light of god and hangs before the Ark of Law. Although many temples have begun to replace the oil lamp with an electronic one.

Other religious temples may use essential oils in a variety of blessings. For example christianity uses their holy oil (typically an anointed olive oil) during both baptisms and exorcisms. Buddhism uses their essential wood oil as a meditation aid. Diyas are oil lamps native to India; And are often used in Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Zoroastrian religious festivals such as Diwali or the Kushti ceremony.

Oils appear to be important to a number of religions, typically for ceremonies or holidays that involve light in some form.

The lamp appeared to be made of a golden metal. It had a double tiered base, the six sides of each tier was angled towards the centered post. The sides of the base appeared to have a different carving on each side. Two I could identify were a horse’s head and what appeared to be wheat.

The centered post starts with large ornamental ridged balls. The further up the post the smaller and smoother the balls become. Extending from the center post are six curved posts. They too have small round balls with smaller bead shaped ornamentation separating the balls, two on each side.

The furthest post has three of the balls, the second two and the one closest to the center post has only one. Where the post meets the bud like candle holder, there are three of the beads. Each of the seven candle holders are bud shaped cones.

This contest was different from the majority of those I have taken part in on rpa. There was writing and art work; However this contest was more essays than fictional writing. I do enjoy learning new things, and that appeared to be the primary purpose of this contest.

I’d like to think I succeeded and learned something new. I’d also like to think that my participation improved someone else's day, or assisted in someone else learning something new.

So as I still need twenty two words I thought I would say thank you to our lovely Kris for running this contest. She is an incredible admin and an amazing person. Thank you Miss Kris.
