Notre Dame burns in the skyline of Paris, an icon has been struck down.

Thankfully the damage isn't as extensive as previously feared and holy relics, treasures and such that were there have been untouched. The statues that were in/on the spire that burned and collapsed were removed days in advance because of the renovations and work that were being done when the fire started and many think may have accidentally lead to the fire.

Apparently, the roof and spire that are the major points of damage were made up of such ancient pieces of wood that it was all but lost as soon as the first embers caught, as putting out or containing fire on wood like that is almost impossible.

It's unfortunate that the cathedral was underinsured, but let's be honest: how do you insure an icon of a cathedral? Also, the amount of donations they're receiving should suffice to return it to it's former glory, it will just take time and care.

It's a tragedy that such a beautiful place has been (at least in-part) destroyed, but it's a miracle that no one was harmed, as the cathedral typically receives 30 thousand visitors a day.

No, the Archbishop of Paris said all three have been saved, per CNN. They are damaged, but not as bad as they could have been.
