Battle Arena Description:

Centre

In the middle of the arena lay the shadowy crumbling ruins of a Greek temple, situated atop an obsidian plateau rising 30 feet above the liquid base of the arena. It is dark amongst the tightly-packed pillars and the once white stone has been stained a pale yellow and grey from the sulfur and ash. Several of the pillars have collapsed and the remains of the stone roof lie as rubble piles on the floor. The floor is cracked in many places, throwing up a red glow from the flowing magma below. Several hanging oil basins provide limited light from whichever walls remain inside.

Middle Ground

Encircling the temple is a sulfur-filled chasm beneath which lies a moat of fiery lava. Several black flat-topped spires of rock, a little wider than a great oak each, extend upwards from the lava reaching various heights between the walls and the plateau.

Bottom

The bottom of the arena is a lake of molten rock which extends underneath the plateau, spitting up fire and hot rocks on occasion.

Side

Sharp black rocks make up the wall of the arena from which two rocky platforms extend on opposing sides - the starting areas. Thin black rock arched bridges take the contender from their platform past the collection of spires and to the temple in the centre.

Other

The arena is bathed in darkness as a night-time engagement and the smell of burning sulfur is heavy in the air.

Severe impacts can shatter and crack the black rock.Magic/Superhuman abilities allowed: Yes

If so, any specifics: Nope, just follow the rules

Conditions for battle: Fight until death, incapacitation or submission. In the case of the latter two, the victor is decided by the judge.

---------------

OOC : Feel free to re-use the arena in your own fight if you're short on ideas for your own or just like the sound of it :)

A ferocious howl thundered through the stadium, ricocheting off the dark rock that enclosed the two combatants and extended upwards far beyond their reach. Its source was Nyrin, frantically snapping at the arena organisers who had directed him onto the platform. They screamed in fear and he chuckled in exhilarated pleasure, the noise reverberating in all nine throats, an echo that only increased the maliciousness of the sound. His excitement peaked as one of them tripped, sprawling herself across the blackened ground. His mouths began to salivate as he glimpsed the sweet flesh of her legs, a snack that might carry him through the prevailing battle.

His bliss was soon cut short however as Beta and Delta lunged for their prey, both missing and slamming themselves into the arena walls, webbing the stone with razor-thin cracks that reached out a couple metres in diameter from the impact. Chunks of rocks fell down into the pool of lava below, engulfed by the magma liquid within moments and Nyrin had to watch as his victim made her swift escape, the iron-door exit slammed closed as quickly as they could manage. He gave a disgruntled snort of disappointment, flashes of what he might had done to her skipping across his mind but he discarded them. He had an opponent and it would do him far better to direct such twisted thoughts towards them.

His jaws snapped at the air, tasting the sulphur that mingled in the air and burned at his throats. He could not detect his opponent’s stench through the tainted atmosphere – If anything, that only excited Nyrin more. It was not just a battle now, it was a hunt.

The bridge that extended forward from the platform creaked under his huge weight, his lack of co-ordination making it impossible to steer across it unaided. Three of his heads lashed out, snaking their way round the various spires that surrounded him, helping him to balance. The rock groaned beneath his feet the further he shuffled and he found himself snarling back.

He did not like the ground; he was at home only in the water. The arena was how he had once envisioned hell would be when he had cared about such things, a place he was always destined to end in considering his lifestyle.

His gait was awkward even once he had found his way to the centre of the arena, claws clinging onto the more stable plateau with a sense of relief. At least, that was what he had assumed until he noticed the large cracks upon the floor, revealing the lava below. The red glow glinted off his scales making the shadows that danced across his scales all the more intense. He could still catch no sight of his opponent but he hoped his challenging roar would be more than enough to draw them out of hiding.

Darius stepped out onto the platform and stood pridefully, one foot forward with his cane planted firmly in front of him and his gauntlet planted on his hip. The smell of sulphur forced him to wrinkle his nose in discomfort, the hot air rising about him rippling his suit and blowing his hair to and fro.

For this battle he had elected to wear an ice blue silk suit over a white floral waistcoat with a matching blue ascot tie - contrasting against the harsh black and glowing red of the arena with a cool and calmed image.

There was a sudden and deep thundering sound that soaked right through Darius' skin and shook his innards. To his mind, only two things could have made such a sound. At first he thought it was perhaps thunder, but then he observed that the darkened sky was not lit up at any point. The only other option available to his limited imagination was the conclusion it must have been a tremor, an earth shake, caused by the violently shifting lava below. He breathed a sigh of relief.

The announcer's voice echoed throughout the arena, revealing the names of the two participants. His opponents name was Nyrin...

He threw his free hand up in the air, half the fingers curled loosely in an elegant gesture. As the crowd gave their applause and cheered his apparent bravery, Darius raised his head and smirked.

They adore me, the simpletons...

He twirled the cane between his fingers like a baton before swiftly tapping it against the heel of his boot. A small mirror composed of tiny slats unfolded quickly and snapped rigid as the tiny mechanism within tinkled. Darius brought it up to his face, inspecting his lightly powdered cheeks and softly throwing his head back to move an errant strand of hair. He thought himself a beauty, and none would truly disagree.

Tapping the mirror back inside with his boot, he began to walk along the black rock bridge to the centre of the arena. He grinned widely and walked boldly, cane crunching into the surface with each stride. Darius dared a glance downwards.

He gulped.

The wash of heat and glare of the firey broth below widened his eyes in fear, his heart skipping a beat as the entrancing quality of the sight almost drew him in, forcing him to straighten quickly. His left hand shot out momentarily, waving in the air for balance. He paused, recomposed himself, and carried himself forward, maintaining the visage of complete and utter confidence.

Darius pondered the nature of his opponent and what school of fighting they had attended. They never did tell him who it was. It did not matter, he would surely lay waste to them like he had a thousand times before.

It was probably one of those upstarts from the Americas anyway, almost certainly the case with a name like "Nyrin" he snorted.

He reached the edge of the plateau before the temple, it gave off a sense of crumbling grandeur, a once great thing spoiled through time.

Darius cupped his gauntletted hand to the side of his mouth and spoke loudly, projecting his voice as best he could around the arena. Although this was more for the benefit of the audience than his opponent.

"Hear me, my good man! I face you now on the field of battle; knowing only that one of us shall leave here with their life, and honour, intact. I commend you for your bravery, coming to face such a fearsome opponent such as myself this fine day..."

The crowd rose again for a final applause.

"...let us see if is to be rewarded with a good death. At arms!" he called, revealing the hidden blade beneath his cane with the press of a button, the Ironwood body shunting back into the handle. The damascus skin of the metal threw dancing patterns across his suit as he stepped into the murky half light of the temple...

The ground trembled with each step Nyrin took forward, the rubble that littered the area around the temple bouncing at each slam of his massive feet. Nostrils tested the air, the sound of each inhalation blocking out the murmuring of the onlooking audience, as each head took its own path around the great plateau, attempting to find their meal.

The noise of the crowd would occasionally rise feverishly, shouts of encouragement from what Nyrin could distinguish. A fair few seemed aimed in his direction, their desire for action and spilt blood mounting with each anxious second. They didn’t seem to realise that even if they cheered as he got closer to his victim, he had no idea which head they were yelling at. Alpha was twisting his way around the temple’s outer pillars when the opponent’s voice rang out.

"Hear me, my good man! I face you now on the field of battle; knowing only that one of us shall leave here with their life, and honour, intact. I commend you for your bravery, coming to face such a fearsome opponent such as myself this fine day..."

It confused Nyrin for a moment to hear his prey calling out to him, unused to such a feat as he was. Normally, they would cry or hide – Never had they addressed him in such a condescending tone. Each throat vibrated with a silent growl as Epsilon and Digamma slid their way along the ground and towards the source of the voice. The crowd applauded at, what Nyrin assumed, was mere stupidity of his opponent. This couldn’t be a serious fight; No man would be so arrogant as to make such claims against him.

"...let us see if is to be rewarded with a good death. At arms!"

Epsilon glided over the crumbling rock that stood in the way of him and his prey, a laugh forming at what he hoped was merely jest. He did not expect to find such a man before him, least of all brandishing a sword against him. He jerked his head back to avoid the weapon he had almost rammed his face into, lifting his head from the ground and extending his neck with a low hiss, towering over the mere mortal that stood in his way.

Digamma had twisted himself behind the victim, blocking off the bridge they had entered upon with an ecstatic giggle over what they had found. “Fool,” He snarled, the words barely distinguishable in such a guttural voice, “Human stupid fool.” This was not a battle; it was just another meal. The only difference was his food actually believed it had a chance at besting him.

In other circumstances, Nyrin may have shown mercy. As usual, he found an excuse not to though – The direct threat of the weapon taken as a willing challenge. The lighting of the arena may have been dim and his vision thus impaired but he had no desire to wait for a more opportune moment – Impatience itching in the minds of all nine heads.

Epsilon was the first to move, attempting to attack the foe and instead slamming into a rock a dozen metres to his right.

Digamma waited a few seconds before he started, hovering over the man with an open mouth, saliva dripping hungrily from his razor-sharp teeth. He paused long enough for the smile on his face to form before he lunged towards his opponent with a deafening roar.

Darius' grin dropped almost instantly.

Rising in front of him was a beast of monstrous proportions, its green hide filling most of his sight as it reared up in front of him. It had appeared from behind the pile of crumbled pillars with a treacherous stealth, its thudding steps not registering to Darius until he glimpsed its size. Each one of its heads seemed quite capable of swallowing him whole, their razor sharp teeth only worsening the grim mental image growing within Darius' mind.

How could he have been so easily sneaked upon? By something of that size? Darius questioned his own skills of perception, choosing instead to blame it on the underlying hisses and pops of the liquid base of the arena which had surely masked the sounds.

Never had he seen such a creature before outside of stories and picture books. He stared up, wide-eyed at the creature, his eyes glancing between the multitude of heads. There were 6... 7... maybe more of them, some were thrashing about and others glared directly at him, their heads snaking their way towards him from afar.

Darius turned on his heels, feet slipping momentarily on the dusty floor, as he made a break for the bridge. He was met by a wall of damp scaley flesh which was capped by a snarling, drooling face and recoiled sharply, a look of panic momentarily etched on his face. One of the heads had coiled around the end of the temple and across the entrance to the bridge, blocking his escape. An abominably low and oozing voice spoke from behind the head, chilling Darius to the bone.

"Fool"

He was as surprised that it was capable of speech as he was of the predicament he was now in, its particularly crude imitation of a human voice more disturbing than any lengthy prose.

"Stupid human fool..."

He backed off from the snarling head, his sword held out as far in front as possible to ward the creature back. Ever the showman, Darius could feel the crowd's concern as the occasional cheers faltered, their confidence in him waining.

Smile for the crowds, old boy...

With an apparent change of moral fibre (and with considerable disregard for instinct) he threw his head back in mock laughter, then light-heartedly shrugged to the crowd over his situation. He intended that they think this was no more than an interesting development in the grand scheme of his victory - but he did not succeed in fooling himself. He twirled the thin sword in his hand as he turned to face the bulk of the monster once more, gulping uncertainly.

He was met with a rush of hot, dank air as a snarling head shot past, curling at the last second and slamming into the ground several metres away and sprinkling his shoulders with small pieces of shattered rock. Darius froze, momentarily stunned by the simply mind blowing proportions of the creature and the speed it could move, the fragments of rock bouncing off of his neck. Thankfully its accuracy left a lot to be desired, but this was little comfort as his eyes began slowly to track the neck directly in front of him.

Looking up he was greeted by the drooling face of another head directly above him, it's eyes as black stones firmly locked on Darius' frame. Each breath carried to him a foul smell of rotting meat and dead fish, showering his face with lighter pieces of drool. Larger globules of saliva dripped from the two rows of blades in its mouth, slapping heavily on the stone floor. It's mouth widened in an expansive grin, the malice growing behind its cold, inhuman eyes.

As its eyes narrowed, Darius instinctively dropped prone to the floor with his hands and rolled to the right. As he rolled he felt another rush of air as the beast lunged to the place where he had been standing. Darius haphazardly thumped the clasp on his gauntlet as he aimed it past the beast's flank. Several small jets of steam hissed from within the brass and leather gauntlet as his arm juddered, the reservoirs quickly building pressure behind the metal bolt.

With a final hiss the bolt flew from the chamber as his arm bucked, carrying with it a snaking black cord as it buzzed through the air.

It struck home against one of the soiled pillars and the barbed head dug several inches in, throwing a small cloud of white dust into the air. Darius hastily released a lever on the side of the gauntlet to its furthest extent and vented all remaining pressure to reel himself in.

The effect was instant. The cable reeled back harshly into the device, jarring his arm painfully and threatening to dislocate the limb. He cursed having to use the grapple in such a fashion and gritted his teeth. Darius shut his eyes tightly as the ground began to move beneath him, bumping his chest and knees against the stone floor.

Picking up speed over the bumpy ground, Darius rolled onto his back and raised his sword. Craning his head around he saw the rough green shapes of the creature's flank and legs drawing closer to his right. He readied his sword.

As the grapple picked up speed Darius was jostled about even more over the uneven surface, wincing as his back suffered several blows. He thrashed his sword arm most un-gracefully towards the blurred frame of the creature, aiming to score at least a glancing hit in payment for the previous attack and grievous spoiling his clothes would undoubtedly take from this manouvre.

His figure continued to pick up speed as he cleared the beast's hind, drawing to a stop as he reached the pillar some way behind it. He lay, back against the pillar, head lolling and covered in dust. Darius shook his head quickly, shaking his hair free of the debris and restoring his senses, and looked slowly up to his arm.

He hung from the column like a lop-sided puppet, the grapple still firmly attached and tightened to the rock. Darius wrestled with it again and snarled in effort, glancing back at his opponent momentarily amongst the panicked shaking and placed his cane on the ground.

"I should warn you!" he called out, shaking once more against his self-made trap with his free hand.

"One should never take it upon themselves to spit upon a gentleman - it is a great dishonour and an even graver mistake! Mark my words!"

An audible gasp and the sounds of slightly panicked voices could be heard throughout the crowd as the ground started to shake. A few of the pillars toppled over, causing dust and ash to fly into the air.

As the arena continued to shake, the sound of cracking could be heard as the earth split and large cracks started to appear and run along the length of the plateau. A hissing noise could be heard as steam was expelled from the cracks, which were slowly getting wider.
