Name: Deva
Alias: Mariela 'Mari' Sosa
Gender: Female
Age: Thousands of years, though an exact age is uncertain. In the eyes of mortals, Deva appears as a woman in her early twenties.
Appearance: Deva as Mariela,
Deva (True self)
(Note: On Earth, fellow gods and goddesses will see Deva as the mortals do. Deva only appears as her true self while on the celestial plane and in the Slumber)
Goddess of: 'the Slumber'
Faction: Balance
Powers:
- Enhanced strength - Being one of the Balance, Deva has been granted the physical strength that would allow her to stand toe-to-toe with her fellow gods and goddesses in order to ensure that balance is kept.
- Limited Omnipathy - Rather than being able to read one's immediate thoughts, the Goddess Deva is able to tap into the hopes, desires, inhibitions, and fears of both man and immortal. In Avesta, amongst her fellow gods and goddesses, Deva's reach extended across the entire universe. On Earth, that reach has been severely limited to a single planet.
- Induce Sleep - The power to cause other beings to fall into a deep sleep. Like her limited omnipathy, this ability has also been severely limited since her time on Earth, and can only be activated via touch. Those that succumb to Deva's thrall are unable to awaken for an entire sleep cycle (three hours).
- Dream Walking - Deva has the ability to insert her own consciousness into the dreams of others. From there, she can overtake the consciousness of another and assume total control of their dreams. This is usually done via sending her consciousness through the Slumber, but can also be accomplished through touch.
Weapons: She's a stay at home mother of two and will do just about anything to protect those that she loves. I'm sure you can use your imagination. Oh, and there's also
this, which is concealed on her at all times.
Personality: Though she belongs to the Faction of Balance, Deva's interests and values more closely resemble a celestial allied with the Faction of Wisdom. She is genuinely fascinated by the mortal mind, heart, and spirit, and would readily lay her very life on the line for any innocent. With that said, she holds great disgust for those that would seek to disrupt peace, both mortal and immortal alike.
In battle, Deva is only as cold as necessary. If she feels that an opponent deserves mercy, then mercy will be granted. If not, then she will end her foe's existence with very little thought. In addition to this, she is extremely calm. In fact, she's so calm, one would assume her to be pompous. This is not true. Instead, she merely values keeping a clear mind, rather than giving in to rage.
Background:
On the night that man first gave birth to a dream, the Slumber, a realm just outside of the waking world, was created. Selrina, Goddess of Nature and celestial being of the Balance, would claim this new realm for her own. Venturing out into Eden, she plucked a single orchid from its surface and breathed life into it. Its pollen swept across the celestial plane and eventually took the form of a young Goddess,... Deva. Upon her creation taking its first breath, Selrina was most pleased with her handiwork.
The Goddess of Nature would send Deva out into the Slumber to watch over all of mankind and guide him on his journey through the newly found realm of dreams. It was in this realm that Deva, then newly appointed Goddess of the Slumber, would learn much about the mortal men and women of Earth. Over the centuries, Deva would become close to her dear mortals. She'd reward their deeds with her divine guidance, which they would apply to their lives in the waking world, following her grand instruction in order to achieve their aspirations, desires, and what have you.
Misdeeds were rewarded much differently. Deva would haunt those that did ill unto others. Liars, cheating lovers, rapists, killers; None of them were ever too far out of Deva's reach. A perfect example, would be a man known as Adolf Hitler. Unknown to history, he took his own life after being troubled by nightly visions of the men, women, and children whom he annihilated in his thirst for power.
Deva's time in the Slumber took a great toll on her while sitting atop her perch in Avesta. When not attending to the dream realm, she longed to be with her mortals so much that it annoyed the other gods and goddesses to no end. Selrina, believing Deva to be obsessed with mankind, relieved her of her duties and sent her to Earth, but it was no punishment. Instead, it was a favor. There, Deva would live for eighty years, the average life expectancy of a mortal woman, free to do as she pleased. When that time was up, she'd be able to return home, satisfied with the experience. To see that no harm came to her creation, Selrina was even kind enough to leave Deva limited use of her inherited abilities.
For the past fifty years, Deva has been traveling the world under the guise of a Latina by the name of Mariela Sosa. Five years ago, she even managed to find love in a gentlemen by the name of Robert. Together, they have two children, Roberto, named loosely after his father, and Selrina, named by Deva herself after The Goddess of Nature as a means to show appreciation. Life on Earth is grand,... but something is amiss. Only a week ago, stars began falling from the heavens, and Mariela feels as though her peaceful existence on Earth may be in jeopardy. Only time will tell.
