Aragorn. I feel that he had the happiest ending of all of them. King of Gondor, married to the love of his life, and a human living in what was becoming the Era of Men.

Boromir died so that's a no thanks. Legolas, being an elf, will be forced to go to valinor or forced to wither in Middle-Earth. The appendices does say he sails westward with Gimli but Gimli will pass away there and that's sad to live through as Legolas, knowing that your friend is not immortal as you and thus is never ever coming back.

Frodo is broken by the end and also sails and will suffer the same fate as Gimli. Sam loses his best friend in this way and is well-off enough with Rosie but he isn't a king like Aragorn.

Gandalf, as a maiar (if I remember right), will have to deal with Iluvatar and all associated forever. I'd rather deal with mortal problems.

I suppose Merry and Pippin turned out alright but again. I could be alright. Or I could be an alright ruler of Gondor. So I think Aragorn.

In all seriousness, though. Though I stand by my choice Legolas is still, you know. Legolas. Good looking, a sass master, a prince, probably more popular with his fellow elves than we are let on to believe. If you go by book canon then he's got a good singing voice to boot! Life as Legolas would be fun at least 90% of the time
