Firearms also existed along side with knights and castles, here is a demostration of a hand cannon and how it was fired.
If i remember correctly they could punch through armor only from point blank range.
But i don't know how they were used in warfare.
It would really depend, late into the Medieval period guns were more frequently used in warfare. Early on they just weren't as effective or understood but as time went on they became easier to make and better at what they did.

Just watched an interesting video on youtube where the guy does a top 10 on medival weapons. I don't necessarily agree with his no.1. choice, though others may differ on that, but in either case it's still interesting to hear what he has to say on each of the weapons he selected.
