So by now my fellow true believers have seen
this. Which shakes up the MCU in a very massive way. While the current run of the comics has created options for those Avengers whose contracts are ending, most of the characters offering those ways out have yet to be introduced. But Captain Marvel will introduce a true game changer.
For those who don't follow the comics, or missed the scene in the trailer, Skrulls are a race of Alien shapeshifters. They have this thing about conquering the universe, and tend to go about it fairly deviously. In the comics the heroes of Earth have often disrupted their plans. So much so that Earth has become a prized jewel to them. One such attempt to take Earth was the Secret Invasion storyline; This storyline gathered a lot of attention because of how it shook up the 616 universe. (For those unaware, Universe 616 is the area of the Marvel Multiverse most of the regular comics take place in. The Ultimate verse and the MCU are different parts of the multiverse; 1610 and 199999 respectively.)
The long and short of the plot for Secret Invasion is that the aliens replace a number of Earth's heroes. Some of those who were replaced were Spiderman, Thor, Beast and the Invisible Woman. Their powers were mimicked using alien technology. The invasion also seemed to reach its final stage only after Nicholas Fury disappeared.
Of course bringing up Fury leads me to
this movie. Nick's appearance and the look of a few costumes made me think of the Secret War story arc. In which Fury takes a number of heroes (Spidey, Cap, Cage, and Daredevil) and preemptively attacks a terrorist. Now it's unlikely Far From Home will follow that storyline, but it could instead be the first step towards Secret Invasion. Could be Mysterio's tech is stolen from the Skrulls maybe?
So the idea is that the next Avengers movie introduces the real Avengers crashing in a stolen Skrull ship to face the aliens who had replaced them. Thus introducing the new actors and sending the old out in style.
That's all I've put together for now. So….
