Variable geometry ships are pressurized compartments and modules inside a sea of nanites - the ship reshapes itself to suit the mission.

Reminds me of the Culture GSV's which are effectively bundles of field generators and reactors that contain themselves in sealed planes of force and build structures as required.

Is this one dead already?
