Name: Claire Redfeather
Age: 24
Gender: Female
Race: Mesozoic Zone Human, humans adapted to the Mesozoic Zone, a rapidly-expanding area of the United States where genetically engineered dinosaurs roam.
Racial Traits/Abilities:
Hardy: Mesozoic Zone Humans are adapted to an environment that is actively trying to kill them at all times. As a result, the rest of the world seems easy. Claire can fall from greater heights, suffer heavier blows, hold her breath for longer, avoid bleeding out for longer, and eat food or drink that is at a lower quality than an average human. Similar to Neanderthals, Claire’s skeleton and muscles are harder and heavier, which can spell bad news if she needs to swim.
Brave: MZ Humans have survived centuries alongside some of the most terrifying creatures to walk the planet. After a while, even fear starts to dull. Claire can accurately assess the threat of people and animals. She may exercise caution to keep her alive, but she is rarely actually afraid.
Light of Foot: MZ Humans are near the top of the food chain, but they are still outranked by the likes of Tyrannosaurus rex. After centuries of hiding from both predator and prey alike, MZ Humans have perfected the art of moving silently through the brush. Claire is adept at stealth, able to stay undetected until she chooses to reveal herself.
Improved Night Vision: The Mesozoic Zone has a thick canopy, leaving the ground in near-darkness for most of the day. Animals living in the Mesozoic Zone have improved night vision than those outside of it, including humans. Claire can see clearly in dim light like it was bright light and in darkness as if it was dim light.
Skills and Abilities:
Raptor Rider: Claire has succeeded where others have failed. After many years of hard work training, Claire has raised a Utahraptor, named Nila, from egg to fully grown. Nila is like a combination hunting dog and war horse, and smarter than both. With a unique saddle, Claire can ride Nila into battle.
Swordswoman: Claire is highly proficient with a number of weapons, namely the longsword, pike, halberd, axe, and javelin. However, she only carries a longsword.
Animal Handler: Although she specializes in dinosaurs, Claire can read the basic mood of most animals. She can calm most animals down and perform first aid on them if necessary. Animals fee calm around her, and she has an easier time than most training them.
Survivalist: Claire has spent most of her life in a thick, deadly jungle. She has extensive survival knowledge, and can find food and water enough to feed a group after doing 1 hour of searching per person, or half an hour for herself. She can also build waterproof shelters, navigate by the stars, create primitive tools, and hunt.
Magical or Other Ability: Yes
Linked: Claire and Nila share a pseudo-telepathic bond, where they can feel each other’s emotions, along with the general direction and how far away the other one is. This link can be blocked with 3 feet of wood or dirt, 1 foot of stone or concrete, 1 inch of steel, or a thin sheet of lead. This link does not need to travel in a straight line however, and can go around corners, under doors, between bars, or through pipes.
Personality: Claire is a bubbly, happy person more interested in fun than anything important. She is constantly in awe of what the outside world is like and is determined to see and try everything. Her life in the Mesozoic Zone means she has different ideas about how people should act and what is and isn’t polite, and may accidentally insult somebody. However, all of her frivolity disappears when Nila is in danger. She has no qualms about cutting somebody down where they stand if they threaten her dinosaur. She will rip and tear through anything for Nila.
Backstory: Claire was born in a nomadic tribe of humans called the Redfeather tribe. However, with the addition of her and another two babies, the Redfeather tribe settled down and set up a more permanent village. As she grew, the village turned from a single tribe to an amalgamation of four separate tribes and assorted loners. Soon, the jungle was less of a threat. It was now their territory, and anything that stepped foot in their territory was their subjects.
Predator attacks happened less and less as their village and armaments grew. Eventually, it was even safe to walk alone outside the walls, provided you never went out during night. However, as a teenager, she and her friends were feeling a bit rebellious, and they snuck out during the night. They hadn’t been out for more than 10 minutes when they got the great idea to steal a raptor egg. It was summer after all, and they would be hatching soon.
They made their way out to the Longgrass Fields. They surrounded a nest, a massive mount of sticks and leaves, covered by a snoozing Utahraptor. They pulled their weapons, ready to do anything for the eggs. But they had scarcely readied themselves when the mother woke up. Seeing herself surrounded by a group of armed humans and still half-starved, she fled to nest to a safe distance. She could only watch as the teens took four of her five eggs.
Back home, Claire managed to hatch the egg and imprint upon the hatchling. She kept it hidden for six months, feeding it scraps of meat from her dinner and whatever small lizards she could catch. After six months, it was already the size of a golden retriever and just as hungry. She couldn’t keep it hidden any longer, as it was determined to follow her everywhere. So, nervously, she showed Nila to her parents and the village elders. They wanted to kill it, but Claire showed them that Nila was trainable by getting her to sit on command. Skeptically, they allowed Claire to keep Nila.
After five years, Nila was fully grown and Claire was a member of the village guard. Riding atop Nila’s back, she was unstoppable. However, just as Claire was finding a place within the village, the Recovery Coalition was coming into power. A helicopter flew over her village. Awestruck, she was determined to find out what it was and where it had come from. She packed a bag and set off immediately. After nearly 2 weeks of travel, she left the edge of the Mesozoic Zone and came to her first town. After a night of rest in an inn (a new concept for her, as was money) she received directions to New Civic. After 2 more weeks of travel, she arrived in New Civic. Completely out of her depth, she spent a few days simply wandering New Civic, trying to navigate the streets. A Good Samaritan took pity on her and pointed her in the direction of a government building, where she signed onto the Recovery Coalition immediately.
Personal Equipment: A longsword, a hunting knife, a cloak, and bag of hadrosaur jerky.
Other:
The day was beautiful, a warm sun set in a cloudless sky. The sky! It was beautiful. Claire still couldn’t get over how
open it was. There was nothing between her and that big blue painting. Nila snorted and stamped her foot impatiently, and Claire rubbed her neck.
“I know girl, I’m hungry too. Let’s see if they’ve got food.” She nodded towards a the next village they were riding up on. With a chuff, Nila set off towards the village. Claire laughed in delight, the wind pulling her flaming hair. It was alway exhilarating to ride Nila, especially when she got going like this. As they neared the town, Nila slowed. She padded through the town streets, and Claire could feel every eye on her and Nila. She ignored them, heading for the building with the hog’s head sign. She tethered Nila outside and pulled the saddlebag of hadrosaur jerky over Nila’s snout. She pushed the door open. Inside, patrons were drinking and eating. Her stomach rumbled again, and she took a seat at a nearby table. She felt half-starved, and ordered a plate of meat and potatoes.
After eating, she felt like sleeping right there, but she knew the inn workers would shoo her out later. She left a handful of coin on the table, not bothering to count. Money was a weird thing these towns had. Apparently everyone liked these little metal discs. They had no worth to her, except maybe to throw. As she left the inn, she laughed. Nila had fallen asleep right there, curled up in her side. She went back inside and ordered a room for herself. Maybe they could stay a few days in this town.
