I have a question: could I play a robot?

I’m thinking of a droid designed by a species that cannot leave its home planet without extreme difficulty, but can send remotely controlled robots to carry out physical tasks that would otherwise be impossible for the controller. Perhaps they could have a mind-link sort of system where the controller lays dormant in a stasis chamber while their consciousness, or a copy of it, is sent to the droid. The droid then relays back information at a near instant pace, so the entire process is in real time, or so near it that it’s rounded to zero difference.

Interstellar communication is by ansibles - these are a huge orbital array that require lots of power in order to reach neighboring systems, then uses conventional radio and laser comms to relay to nearby worlds in the system - which means comm delays in most cases. Because of the power required for an ansible, nobody's developed a portable one yet.

And Nyx itself doesn't have an ansible, it's too new of a system.

Basically I see three possibilities.

It's an AI. It files reports periodically back to its home world - but then that would make it an ambassador, not an Academy student.

It's a Waldo - a telepresence robot, with the operator inside a sealed environment. Ideally, the environment would either need to be kept nearby for short ranged wandering, or at base camp using a satellite relay.

It's a Cyborg - its body is back on its homeworld being sustained (or possibly rented) and its brain has been cased and plugged into the control circuitry. As long as nothing happens to the braincase, it's fine. Most likely you have two shell suits that it can swap between. Ideally, the cyborg body should resemble the natural body as close as possible to prevent brainshock.

I think the cyborg idea would be the closest to what I had in mind. So then, what’s the limit with how complicated the robot can be? Ultraviolet and infrared sensors, night vision, atmosphere sensors, the whole nine yards?

Spoiler: Home World - Thrannon 

Thrannon is an M-Class planet roughly the size of Earth. Gravity is approximately 1.01 times the standard. Biodiversity and biome differentiation is standard. 72% of the surface is covered in liquid water. Axial tilt is 13 degrees. Atmospheric content is 71% nitrogen, 28% oxygen, 1% other gases mix. By all means, Thrannon is an entirely standard world. Space travel should be easy for the technologically advanced Versiv species. However, the Versiv were dealt a terrible hand by the universe. Due to high concentrations of cosmic radiation around their planet and an unfortunate aspect of Versiv biology, space travel pulls Versiv DNA apart at the seams.

Spoiler: Description 

Segmented carapaces and jointed limbs give the Versiv a superficial resemblance to insects such as beetles or crickets. Two legs bend backwards at the knee and end in clawed feet. Four arms grasp tools and weapons in three-fingered hands. Despite standing upright, the Versiv have a slightly hunched appearance as their exoskeleton slopes smoothly from the top of the head to their back. Large, mammal-like eyes are deeply set in insectine faces. Long, wispy antenna drift over the top of a Versiv’s head and down the back, almost reaching to the floor. Mandibles and chelicerae grasp and chew food. Versiv coloration comes in muted browns, greens, and yellows. Versiv average anywhere from 4 to 8 feet tall and weigh anywhere from 95 to 275 pounds.

Racial Strengths: Durable and fast on Thrannon, their antennae grant them a better understanding of their environment, binocular vision, and pick up new skills rather quickly
Racial Weaknesses: Physically incapable of leaving Thrannon with current technology

Despite their current predicament, the Versiv do not easily accept defeat. After centuries of experimentation on biology, engineering, medicine, robotics, and programming, the Versiv have found a way to leave Thrannon, if not entirely in person. By placing a Versiv’s brain into a chemical solution, then sealing it inside a life-support system and implanting it into a robotic avatar, they can successfully leave Thrannon. The brain is placed in a drug-induced torpor and put in a sealed metal cube that keeps out nearly everything while traveling away from the dangerous amount of cosmic radiation. That way the mind can heal from the procedure while being protected from the deadly cosmic radiation. Once out of range, the life-support system can then be attached to the cyborg body.

This practice has become commonplace in Versiv society and some even forsake their organic body in favor of their robotic one. Sometimes a family is a mother, a father, a brother, and a 300 pound seven foot tall robot copy of your sister.

Spoiler: Versiv Cyborgs 

Tech Name: Versiv Cyborgs
Manufacturer: Each Versiv is given a grant for 6 cyborg bodies over the course of their lifetime. There are several manufacturers who each specialize in different variations for a cyborg body. These are run by publicly owned companies and overseen by the local government.
Rarity: Cyborg bodies are made for use beyond Thrannon, so while they are made on Thrannon, it is uncommon to see them on a regular basis. Elsewhere in space, they represent the Versiv population in the wider galaxy.
Appearance: Each Versiv submits a request for a cyborg body whenever they need one and are given the task of designing their body. As such, each cyborg body is different, with each Versiv’s twist on them. Colors, patterns, even implanted tools and weapons are variable from cyborg to cyborg. Some entirely replicate their organic body, others retain the general size, shape, and appearance of a Versiv, and some take their cyborg body to its extremes. However, the recovery period spent getting used to your new body is longer the more different your cyborg body is from your old one. Some even have to relearn how to walk each time they switch bodies.
Intent: The general purpose of a cyborg body is to allow Versivs to make it amongst the stars. Beyond that, a cyborg body’s specific purpose is up to the designer.
Strength: Allows a Versiv to go beyond the confines of Thrannon and explore the wider galaxy, often given more physical and mental capabilities than the old body, repairs can be done to fix major problems far faster than it would take an organic body to heal
Weaknesses: Where flesh and bone bend and bounce, durosteel and nanoplastics fracture and shatter. Despite being able to take more punishment than an organic body, a break tends to be far more serious. If the life-support system is breached, there is almost nothing one can do to save themselves unless they are near both a doctor familiar with a Versiv’s biology and a robotics engineer familiar with Versiv technology. On Thrannon, this is less of a problem, but elsewhere is almost certainly a death sentence.

I should probably expound upon the life-support system a little.

Spoiler: PLSS 

Tech Name: Portable Life Support System, or PLSS for short
Manufacturer: Due to the sensitive nature of the PLSS, all PLSS are created by the non-profit organization Durvak Space Program. Led by the best and brightest scientific minds of each generation, Durvak Space Program is the sole manufacturer of PLSS.
Rarity: Less common than the cyborg bodies, the PLSS is the irreplaceable part of a cyborg. Each cyborg is designed with space in the center to house the PLSS and connect in ways that allow the contents of the PLSS to pilot the body seamlessly.
Appearance: The PILSS is what stores the brain, braincase, and the most necessary portions of the nervous system and vertebral column inside a cyborg body. Resembling a large rectangular box with rounded corners, it is covered in ports and places for the cyborg body to affix and connect itself to. Entirely opaque, it allows no light in or out. If it were to be opened, inside is a mass of tubes, wires, and chemicals surrounding and plugging into a brain and a few other essential things. It is not meant to be opened.
Intent: By being entirely self-contained and sealed, the PLSS allows the brain, and by extension the Versiv astronaut who owns it, to leave their planet. It is meant to be used in tandem with a robotic body so that the Versiv can act and influence the world around it, but some have put forth the idea: what if it were plugged into a ship?
Strength: Holds the brain and mind of a Versiv astronaut inside, incredibly hard to open, sealed with high-strength magnets. Can withstand temperatures exceeding 100 degrees and -100 degrees Celsius, G-forces exceeding 9 G for a short period of time, and gravities up to 2.0 times standard. It can also survive in total vacuum for short periods of time, longer if the cyborg body is designed for vacuum use.
Weaknesses: Totally and completely defenseless if left without a cyborg body, it’s just a pod with some organs in it. Breaching the PLSS will almost invariably result in the death of the occupant.
