|Homeworld Description| Rock-type planet composed of large swathes of desert and mountainous terrain. Some of the mountains have green zones with flora and fauna, but the majority of the world is covered in non-arable land. The atmosphere is inhospitable to Earth-born humans, but for those who have lived generations on Canis Petram's surface it is breathable. The higher carbon levels and generally higher pressure make for a good crucible for mineral deposits.
|History| For this reason, they are largely dependent on trade for feeding their population. Canis Petram was initially colonised by Earth, but had poor contact and little resource sent with the under-funded mission to the planet. Because of this, they have aging terra facilities for basic support functions and the old district has been built up around those by the founding families. Beyond those are the establishments built by "Holders", something like feudal dukes or co-operative lords who oversee the workers in their unions. The four Holder clans are divided by the four primary resources the world produces, and most of the non-Holder workers have developed family lines that specialise in different aspects of the mining industry. These union-like families have something of an organised crime family feel and crossing lines is generally not done without consequences on one or both sides of the act.
While some Holders are better equipped to deal with internal in-fighting and rights acquisitions, others are strong in trade development and negotiations. All of them have strengths and weaknesses, but they collectively have begun to stabilise a world that has been highly volatile up through the present. With no central government and a population well outstripping the tame general guidelines of the Founding Families that are largely just holdovers from colony era laws from Earth, they are only just starting to go through the civil unrest that may lead them to a more unified (or at least orderly) planet. It is bound to get more bloody and restless before it gets better. Self-interests and greed are still deeply ingrained in the culture, and it is a place none too kind to offworlders considering they have all been poorly treated and taken advantage of historically by other races and planets better equipped to negotiate trade. Those who supply foodstuffs also tend to ratchet up the pressure periodically to demand increasingly more unrealistic supply for the demand on those essential goods. Sometimes there are whispers that a takeover of a more arable planet might solve some of their problems
and serve to unify the disparate groups on Canis Petram, but as those of the Petramians who venture offworld are almost exclusively junkrats and salvagers, it does not look like they could be ready for such a grand coups any day soon. Hopefully one day they'll be able to develop governance and advocacy to pull their planet up from the impoverished conditions they landed in by stopping their credit-grabbing ways internally and focusing their efforts on better trade agreements and alliances with green worlds inside the Federation galaxies who are in need of raw materials for a fair price.
Beyond those groups, merchants and other suppliers, smiths, mechanics, and other tradespeople tend to congregate in the main city rather than the outlying mining settlements and shanty towns. The only broad exception are the members of the Watersheds and Greenies who live in the limited green zones and serve in conservation roles in addition to supplying water and food to the others. Junkers and salvagers are amongst these when onworld, though they tend to have a more rundown section of the city to set up shop or lie low between runs.
|Expertise|- Peerless Mining Operations
- Considerable Refining Operations
- Fledgling Manufacturing Operations
|Kardashev Type| Type 1
|Basic Societal Overview|- If a planet could be blue collar, this place would be so blue it's grey.
- "Take what you can, give nothing back!" [Thank you, Jack Sparrow!]
- Do your job well, it's your lot, don't ask questions or rock the boat. No moping.
- Socially stratified and rigid with little movement through each layer of society.
- Friendly to good trade, but suspicious of frequent bad dealings/bad faith.
- Unfriendly to busybodies and offworlders.
- "People's Justice" - Don't expect a constable if you get caught out in the wrong place/wrong time.
|Allies|
|Enemies|- None Declared (Most outsiders are considered something between neutral and hostile.)
|Natural Resources/Minerals|- |Diamantium| Brilliant and sharper than most gems, this diamond-like mineral is actually a metal rather than jewel. It is one of the hardest substances in the three galaxies, making it valued for the mining operations on the Canis Petram as well as the bladed weapons they both use and forge.
- |Opal Ore| Shifting prismatic ore that turns milky white when cold and clear shot through with translucent, vacillating rainbows when hot. Prized for viewing windows, statuary, and temperature indicators for sensitive equipment.
- |Earth Agate| So-called for its mottled blue, green, brown, and white/cream patterns that look a lot like Earth viewed from space. Most Petramians have never actually seen Earth, but they all recognise it from the sparse education they all receive from the aging lecture theatre capsule in the founder's quarter of the old district. These tend to sell well both from the official Canis Petram gift shop and the hawkers and enterprising junkers who offer polished globe designs to offworlders as souvenirs.
- |Hydracuprum| "Liquid Copper", highly conductive and relatively rare despite the extensive mining operations on Canis Petram. Sells for a high price and even miners looking to make a quick credit are stingy with their stores. While the Holders - those who have claims and manpower to stake their own operations - all tend to fare better than unlanded miners, junkers, and the rest of the population of the planet, those who have hydracuprum interests tend to be unusually well-compensated and well-outfitted.
- |Emerald Salt| While most mining operations are geared towards the four above resources, one upside of much of the water on the planet being undrinkable is the presence of a peculiar cloudy green salt that when collected and processed looks extraordinarily like Earth's emeralds. It is poorly marketed and since processing it is not much use to the natives without enough food to preserve with it, there is more room for this industry and trade to grow than perhaps any other onworld.
- |Earth Resources/Minerals| While most jewels and elements found on Earth are not to be found on Canis Petram, the "Earth Metals" Copper, Iron, Gold, and Silver are. Obsidian may also be found.
- |Limited Flora & Fauna| Most of Earth's wildlife and insect population, as well as many plants are not found here. A few non-native edible plants survived terraforming efforts, but their "alien" counterparts native to Canis Petram are sparse and incredibly valuable due to scarcity.
