    The Third Suspension

    And I'm resentful
because you know how the silence
makes me grind my teeth together
if not seething in rage than to just make
    some noise
fill the hollow space in my ears.

    Flowers don't make commitments.
They die like truth on a stem.

    Are we wasting away?
Like a spark and then we're out.
Like a roll of fog, it's coming at us.

    Are we too stupid?

I can feel the cracks preparing
like targets, I know what exact parts
    are the weakest
what card will be pulled first.
And this house will flutter down around us
    like paper.
    Silent, but totally destroyed.

    No one will hear it
    but us.

I've been writing a love letter for years
I just hadn't known who I was addressing it to.
I looked for someone brilliant, challenging and vexing
All rolled into the extravagant shape of you.

    Before Dawn

    Late at night
    My body feels vacant, empty
And so the ghosts descend upon me

    They pull me from flesh
    From rationality

    They tear at my hair
    Gesticulating wildly, eyes bulging
    Screaming into my ear

    Alone, all alone
    You're better off with us
Come join us in the ghost world
The answer lies above your head

    And in these vacant moments
Rope seems like the best option.
After all, don't I love a good swing?

    But the ghosts like whispers
    Fade back into the wall
    From whence they came
    Leaving me sore, emotionally bruised

    But alone still I am.

    The night is relentless
And so are the ghouls, cycling
Between a calm moment and a cry and a torture
Spiraling like a spool through my ears

I wish for sleep to take me

My brain can't even trust me with dreams
Easy fodder for the ghosts to take
    Manipulate
    Make joy into loneliness
    Happiness to pain
    Fun to emptiness
    Once again.

    There are no dreams
Not when your heart remains lonely.

    Smashed

    Blue horizon -
    Confusing dawn,
    Concrete slabs,
    Checker pawn.

    Used, abused -
    Twisted, fucked,
    Morning glory, dizzy story
    Shit on luck.

    Flowered dress -
    Running free,
    High on crack,
    Could be me.

    Drinking darkness -
    Bottled dare,
    Freckled, speckled,
    Mussed up hair.

    Falling twilight -
    Broken dawn
    Stumbling, bumbling, drunk again
    On the neighbor's lawn.

    Edelweiss

    delicate white-tipped bloom
    scattered
    like a wind
    golden-centered,
    painted room.

    pitter-pattered;
    grasses green sing.
    shifting, wafting,
a rush of spring time swoon.

    lifting, lofting,
    lolling roil,
    air perfumed,
    rotting soil.

    Inchoate

    playing piano
    with the sun
    filtered through the window blinds

    we're just summer sippin'
    each others warmth
your soft skin among the finds

    and we smile, eyes wrinkle
    a secretive glance, a rush
    reading through the lines

A waste can full of dreams -
    Torn up months of plans;
    Simple white lined paper,
Plastered with the depths of my hopes.

    Strew about,
    Balled up,
    Discarded.

A throw shot to the can,
    Missed.
Akin to the ideas jotted down.

I know they clean this place out,
When all the staff leaves for the day.
I know they come and take the trash away.

I hope the guy at night as a good read,
    A nice chuckle:
    This girl's a planner.

    light-footed
    weaving between the lamp
    and the coffee table

    crunching old stale chips
into the cat hair ridden rug

    flies buzzing irritatingly
    right in my eye line
    a grimace

    looking about
    dusty air adrift like snow
    particles revealed in the sun

    standing still
    in my apartment
my mind three thousand miles away

    Espousal

    Covered garden
    Early bloom
    Sunflowered shadow
    Morning gloom

    Foggy dawn
    Wedding morn
    Decked in off-white
    Near the shore

    Quiet reception
    Me and you
    Graveled driveway
    Freshened dew

    Dreams in head space
    Joy in eyes
    Joined together
    In hands, in lives.
