Time: Tuesday, Late Evening
Date: Hospital
Duke had thrown himself out of bed the moment the nurse left. He found his clothes next to his bedside and got dressed, wincing in pain with every movement, but he knew better than to stay here. He had no insurance, and was sure that they had already called his emergency contact.
The last thing he needed was to see Addie again.
He made his way into the hallway with care, being quick to move forward rather than waste time. Duke thought about finding Bao, but he remembered the look in her eyes, the nails digging into his skin, then wondered if it was really worth it at this point. He’d left her behind many times before, always winding up right next to her again. Duke didn’t know if he was willing to go through this psychotic breakdown with her. With any luck, the bullshit would pass within a few days.
But luck was not on his side, for right down the hallway he saw his ex-wife walking down the hallway with a nurse. Her fried-blonde hair and her stiff gait were impossible to miss. Duke turned abruptly with a group of people getting into an elevator. He kept to the back of the crowd, but didn’t realize the elevator was going up instead of down. Any distance was needed. Any distance at all.
It took all of his willpower to not push himself out to the front of the elevator, though his hands shook violently with the need to remove himself from the stuffy crowd. Had she seen him? Was her hand moving to point? Did she mouth his name? Duke’s paranoia left his heart beating strong in his chest, so much that he was sure he’d have a heart attack. Finally out of the elevator, he made his way down the hallway, searching for a sign marked with stairs. Instead, he heard the sound of three voices, one of which was familiar.
Looking around the corner, he saw Bao standing with three men in suits and that one guy from the docks….
Duke flung himself inside of a storage closet.

Bao had to stop herself from itching her arms. She had felt a furious pain in her arms again when she lied to that Erebus fellow, but luckily he’d left to go find that Trixi woman. Even now, she still felt the itch, remembering the strange spikes that came up out of her skin when she’d told her lies, but thankfully this seemed to have subsided for the moment. Itching right now would have made her look guilty in front of these three lackies of Erebus’s. Composure was everything in crafting a good lie.
But even more crucial at this moment was the fact that she saw Duke disappeared just as quickly as she'd seen him, a good long distance down the hallway. Hopefully no one else had seen him.
She smiled at the three men, shrugging her shoulders. She quickly rubbed her arms together to help relieve some of the itch. “Guess we’ll have to wait, then? How long do you think this will take?”
