Rated [M] for violence, gore, sexual themes, strong language
In the year 2050, a group of astronauts went on an expedition to the planet Mars. There, they found what they believed to be an old alien technology. They brought it back to Earth, and the planets brightest minds studied the newfound tech. They soon discovered that it was a hyperdrive that would allow intergalactic travel with speeds that previously only seemed possible within fiction. A thousand years later, Humanity has colonized dozens of planets across the galaxy. But is it possible that the aliens who left the tech on Mars were returning?
-
The year is 3053. Orbiting Mars is high-security prison station "Vanguard" filled with one hundred of the galaxies' most dangerous criminals. All was well on the Vanguard, when all of a sudden, a solar flare like none other passed through the station, shutting down all systems for just a brief moment. The station was able to get all systems back on without a problem, however, one of the prisoners took the opportunity to stage a coup with his fellow inmates, where they successfully took control of the bridge.
Welcome to The New Vanguard, an M rated sci-fi roleplay based around a group of convicts from over a thousand years in the future. As stated previously, this roleplay will consist of mature themes, so if that is not something you will be comfortable with, I'd suggest moving along, as this might not be for you.
Spoiler: Rules
Obviously all typical rules apply here. I(InfraredHero) am the GM, and as such, I have all the power here. This is a dictatorship. (In all seriousness, if there is something I choose to do that you don't agree with, don't be afraid to talk to me about it. I'm more than happy to discuss anything I choose to do as GM)
This is an M rated roleplay, and as such, mature themes are allowed as long as you follow RPA's rules and guidelines. Extremely explicit themes will not be tolerated, but you will have the opportunity to write a deplorable human being. This RP is based around dangerous criminals after all. Just don't go overboard. (And if there is something you are unsure of, shoot me a PM and we can figure out if it's something that would be allowed, or you can always contact one of the roleplay moderators of this board)
Spoiler: Points of Interest
Galactic Alliance:
The Galactic Alliance is a system for all governmental powers to communicate and dictate galaxy-wide laws and regulations. The Alliance is not ruled by any one individual; Rather, it is run by representatives of each governmental power elected by their people.
Earth:
In the 31st century, Earth is flourishing in more ways than humanity ever thought it would. The entire planet is one giant metropolis being supported by an artificial eco-system. While Earth is the official capital planet of the Galactic Alliance, it's own government is actually split into multiple factions vying for global control. The planet is home to nearly 250 billion people.
The Vanguard:
The Vanguard is a high-security prison station with a maximum of 100 inmates, and nearly double that in guards. The prisoners are said to be the most dangerous criminals in the galaxy who should have been given the death sentence if life was fair. The reason they didn't, however, has been speculated by many to be a conspiracy to have a group of elite soldiers made by Galactic Alliance officials for political emergencies.

Spoiler: Alec Crane (InfraredHero)
Name: Alec Crane
Gender: Male
Age: 67
Homeworld: Earth
Spoiler: Appearance:
Alec is a somewhat tall man, standing at 6'3". Physically, he's on the more average size in terms of an athletic build.
Biography: Alec lived his childhood in a very poor neighborhood. His parents were good people who were able to give their son a roof over his head, and access to a somewhat decent school considering the options, but every day was a gamble on whether or not robbers would break into their apartment to take what little possessions they had, or worse, their lives.
One day, their worst fear came to life. A group of men from a local gang broke into their apartment and started looting the place. Alec's father tried to protect his family, but it merely ended in bloodshed. Alec's parents were both dead, and the robbers got away with all the valuables. The local law enforcement found the boy and he was placed into the foster system.
Alec went through the rest of his childhood with the same one foster family, then he left to join law enforcement. He wanted to help make sure other families weren't torn apart like his was. But sometimes, good intentions are corrupted. Alec slowly became more respected in his work, even making it to a high officer ranking, but eventually, he found himself in a sticky situation where he had to accept the help of a gang.
Alec was now working with the very people he swore to take down, but it was too late for him to get out. He just went deeper and deeper with several local gangs, until one day, just like seemingly everything else in his life, it backfired on him. Suddenly he was getting charged with over a thousand counts of murder and several acts of terrorism. Whether or not he committed any of it, he was found guilty of everything and initially sentenced to death, but that was almost immediately changed to a life sentence on The Vanguard.
Skills: Hand-to-Hand combat; Small firearms; Leadership
Other: Alec was the one who began and led the coup
Spoiler: Evelyn Zhang (SaltyIrishman)
Name: Evelyn Zhang
Gender: Female
Age: 26
Homeworld: TRAPPIST-1f
Appearance: Evelyn is 8'1", as a result of the lowered gravity on her homeworld. She is muscular, a combination of the heightened gravity on the prison, her past as a warrior, and her efforts at working out. Her hair is buzzed by choice. She resembles someone of Asian descent, and her skin is deeply tanned.
Biography: Evelyn was born on a merchant ship in deep space. The ship was severely damaged, and she nearly died. A few hours later, scavengers boarded the ship. They took everything valuable, including Evelyn. They took Evelyn back to TRAPPIST-1f, where she grew up on one of the smaller island chains. There, she learned sailing, fishing, and possibly more important, pirating, of the aquatic and space-faring kind. When she was younger, about 14, she began piracy on the seas of TRAPPIST-1f. She learned hand-to-hand combat, intimidation, and developed a keen eye. When she was 17, she began to go on space missions. She was a deadly force, leaving no survivors. Eventually, when she was 20, an Alliance police team was sent to calm the area down. When they arrived, Evelyn ran, like any good pirate, but she was gunned down. Her ship crashed into the Leviathan Sea, and when the police found the ship again, Evelyn was in critical condition. The rest of her crew were dead. She was taken to a regular prison at first, but when she developed a reputation for breaking people over her knee, she was sent to the Vanguard.
Skills: Hand-to-hand combat, detection, investigation, and split-second decision-making.
Other: Evelyn has a personal vedetta against one of the gaurds, and if she sees him, she will split from any group and attempt to enact revenge.
Spoiler: Apollo "Mute" Rhyidan (Aki Shinome)
Name: Apollo “Mute” Rhyidan
Gender: Male
Age: 29
Homeworld: Luna (Earth’s Moon)
Appearance: Mute stands at 5’9” with a rhomboid build. His leg muscles are extremely well developed however, the rest of his body is proportionally neutral thanks to his passive lifestyle; save literally out running law enforcement. His brown eyes have been surgically implanted with the latest HUD technology to allow him not only to see without the need for glasses but can be modified to give him on the fly information (though this function has been heavily restricted when he was arrested). His long hair is kept into dreadlocks, reaching to his upper back. While he was born on Earth’s Moon, his lineage can be traced back to Jamaica, which shows through his complexion. Finally, his neck has a ruby black scar running down from the front around to his left shoulder as a result of his time at DARTS. This damaged his vocal cords so severely that he cannot speak, thus earning him the nickname, Mute.
Biography: Apollo James Rhyidan was born in the colonies of Earth’s moon into poverty. His father was an 8-time convicted felon and his mother had to work 3 jobs to keep him and his brothers and sister alive. Everyday he had to struggle to get to tomorrow; whether it be bullies, hunger, testing, or criminals looking to take advantage of his needy composition.
It wasn’t until he joined the Luna Security Forces that he, for the first time, knew success. It was here that he discovered his abnormally high affinity for technology; specifically inventing and hacking. He was assigned to the Developing and Acquisition of Research Technology Section (DARTS) where he quickly became a household name; hacking, analyzing and backward-engineering unknown alien technology better than any engineer before or since. However, it wasn’t always so good, for it was here too that he lost his ability to speak due to the neighboring detention facilities breakout in 3048. An inmate had discovered Apollo and his team in a safe zone and Apollo managed to drive him off but, not before suffering a severe laceration to his neck from the inmate’s improved shank.
He would make a near full recovery, but the damage from the blade to his vocal cords rendered him unable to speak. This event not only changed him physically, but mentally as well and not for the better. He became bitter towards all criminals and soon his inventions were designed to inflict maximum pain to their targets without killing them. His higher ups soon declared him mentally compromised and sent him to a rehab center for treatment but in his mind, he felt betrayed by the people who he considered his family. His breaking point came when passed his rehab exit examination. Despite the good news, he was not allowed to reenter DARTS and was instead assigned to a desk job working with DARTS.
Apollo, now known as Mute, began his revenge fueled criminal escapades by stealing technology from DARTS and combining it to create his first illegal tech, the Mute Zone. With it, he was able to dampen the sound around an area and along with his hacking skills he was able to steal more top-secret technology from literally right under the department’s noses. He became quite wealthy, giving the criminals he once brought to justice an overwhelming edge against law enforcement for a price. However, his perfect streak would come to an end when during one of his raids, he was caught by an old friend and co-worker of his. Mute, out of the little respect he had left, decided to let his friend go. However, instead of keeping Mute’s secret, his friend gave him up to the authorities.
Mute would not go quietly and went on the run for the next 6 years, using his gadgets to disorient and unbalance his pursuers. Mute’s mental state deteriorated further, and he went on a murderous rampage, killing every single person who knew him out of misguided anger to the person who he thought was his friend ratting him out. He justified it by calling it “Tying up loose ends”. He even infiltrated New Alcatraz Galactic Prison, one of the most secure facilities in the galaxy, and murdered his father execution style to the back of the head.
His rampage would come to an end when he found his mother on her deathbed, heartbroken at what her son had become. Mute unflinchingly pointed his father’s old handgun at the woman who had given him life and pulled the trigger. As the round left the muzzle, he had a moment of clarity, and desperately tried to stop the bullet from killing the last of his family. It was during this mental breakdown that he was captured by law enforcement and lead away, heartbroken and in tears, to the same facility he had murdered his father in. After serving a year, and racking up numerous assaults, theft, and escape charges, it was decided to move him to Vanguard in the hopes that it’s superior containment measures could Mute from doing anymore harm.
Skills: Inventing, Hacking both current and unfamiliar technology, Stealth, Evasion, and Defensive Combat techniques.
Other: Mute’s moral compass is extremely warped to the point of him thinking only for the moral good of himself, able to justify committing all manner of atrocities to others if it means he gets an upper hand on his target or someone else.
Spoiler: Mute's Inventions
A list of Mute’s inventions during his time at DARTS and on the run (in chronological order).
• Stardust Grenade – A highly advanced flashbang grenade that stuns/blinds both organic and synthetic beings
• Drive Stunner – A stun gun that fires an armor piercing dart instead of contact probes to deliver an extremely high voltage shock
• Drive Stunner Baton Attachment – A reinforced carbon nanotube attachment that can deliver a shock through armored targets such as Kevlar and light metal.
• Heartbeat Sensor – A portable radar capable of detecting rhythmic heartbeats at a range of 10 meters
• Pulse Echo Emitter – A sonogram capable of stunning large groups of criminals with a high frequency whine delivered the top of the human ear’s hearing range.
• Blackstar Grenade – A modification of the Stardust Grenade that intentionally fragmentates to deliver lacerations to its victim
• Drive Stunner Overload Attachment – A high-gain-yield capacitor capable of converting voltage to current, driving the target to near death
• Pulse Echo Disruptor – A modification designed to rupture eardrums and destabilize a target’s nervous system by compressing soundwaves to the point of them literally punching the target’s hearing
• Mute Zone – A large disk-like tech that, when attached to the ground, actively slows the sound waves around a 10-meter sphere around it to a dead crawl, effectively killing sound in its sphere of influence. Can pierce 3-meter thick concrete.
• Mute Grenade – A portable version of the Mute Zone that can be thrown. Effects wear off faster due to its temporary, explosive nature.
• Gazer – An illegal modification of his implanted glasses which gives him head’s up information in front of his sight which grants him an overwhelming tactical advantage against his opponents. Disabled upon entry to New Alcatraz.
Spoiler: Adara Ignatius (Quetzalcoatl)
Name: Adara (Hellfire Fairy, Agent of Chaos, Satan’s Architect…etc) Ignatius
Gender: Female
Age: 20
Homeworld: Mephestous-F8989 (No long habitable)
Appearance: Adara stands at the towering height of exactly five feet. She has short red hair and soft lavender eyes. Outfits do not matter to her except that they must have plenty of pockets. As such she typically dresses in more tom-boy attire. Her hands are not soft; she has the occasional scar or burn mark from years of dealing in her family’s craft.
Biography: Adara grew up on Mephestous-F8989 which was an extremely volatile planet. Known for its harsh heat and harmful natural gases. The plant was a composite site for some the riches ores and materials. Most people on the planet were they to become ore miners or foolish private gold diggers. Death was common on this planet, still sad…but not uncommon considering the place was a magma wasteland.
Adara’s family was just that…general miners. Her father and brothers would go off into their large “Safe” mining machines while Adara and her mother would stay at home, tending to their private farms and practice in what her mother would call her “life’s craft” Fireworks. Adara was fascinated in the old ways. Nowadays people used projections and artificial lights but to Adara these things meant nothing. Nothing was more satisfying than a good firework. Thus she studied the art to making a satisfying bang.
One day however there was an eruption…one so large it destroyed the foundations of the planet. Maybe a miner had hit something they should not…maybe there was some experimentation on power or technology…maybe the planet was just fed up with it but there were explosions…everywhere. The horrors were extreme people melting…dying…suffering. Adara and her family tried to escape but when rescuers from a nearby planet finally came…only Adara and a few other escaped.
Orphaned and heartbroken the only she could do was vow vengeance against this planet. She wanted nothing more than to find a way to destroy the place she once called home. In the foster system she traveled a lot…Adara only showed excitement when she either played with fire or worked on making fireworks like her mom taught her. In school she did not do well…only getting passing scores in reading, math science. Family’s would pick her up only to drop her off again telling the places she was a menace who only enjoyed seeing things burn.
Once a formal adult (she was fourteen at the time) she tried to live her life a simple fireworks creator…however the creations she made never astounded her anymore. So many attempt to appease even herself…there simply was no color anymore…all she could see was the burning of magma. It was not until she watched an accidental fire down the block that she felt something stir. The flames…the pop of gas exploding…this was what she needed. This was how she could get her revenge and feel like living again…she needed to go back to that planet and blow it up…the largest firework in existence…
Since that moment she left without a trace…studying the art of explosions. In total her accounts of arson are immeasurable. It wasn’t until she took a job from a group of individuals to make the largest explosion she could, that she was finally put away in the vanguard. Who knew that attempting to set off a cascade of explosions at an election celebration would cause so much trouble. After all to her…to beauty and experimentation were enough.
She never counted her destruction...nor did she ever feel any sympathy. Nothing would stop her from either dying or reaching her goal of planetary destruction.
Skills: Chemical Engineering, Sabotage, and anything that makes big explosions. Not so much and inventor or innovator, just a demolitions expert.
Other: Very easy to motivate as long as it follows her passion toward explosion. She is not crazy or evil, nor is she really an agent of chaos. She just wants to practice her work for her final venture to revenge against something inanimate. Otherwise very kind a sweet. Excellent cook also.
