    Default Gladiator - Prologue

“You may leave now.” An elegant voice said quietly as a figure was forced to its knees in front of a raised chair. The only light cast into the room came from the flickering candle light in the hall, and the window on the ceiling that cast a circlet of moonlight onto the raised dais on which a women set.
The doors closed casting shadow on the figure once more as the women’s golden pools of light stared down at him with a mix of interests, amusement and a sly thoughtfulness that only fit her alluring face. She gently swirled a glass of liquid, bright silver under the moonlight, in a delicate glass.
“You are a war prisoner, are you not?” She asked in that silken voice that held a hint of hidden schemes. “An unfortunate soul you are to have been forced into the blood games…” She took a sip from the glass. “...Fodder for the Warriors who compete for glory rather than life itself.”
“Do you have personal business… Or is this for your own amusement and pleasure?” Was the gruff interruption made by the figure kneeling in the shadows.
“He has a voice!” The women said before setting her glass aside and stepping down to the floor. “I’m glad to see you still have life and a little fight left, Tell me…” She said her golden eyes peering down at him. “Would you like to go home?”
This perked the man’s interest, but it was obvious he wasn’t about to get his hopes up.
“If I could give you a chance, a real and true chance to return to your home, would you?”
“That depends.” The man replied. “What do I have to give up?”
There was a flash of white as the woman grinned. “Very possibly, your life.” She began to walk around him slowly. “The games might be a sport, but it's a sport pitting one life against another, Blood flows freely on those courts and halls that the games are played, there is no law or order within the confines of the battle.” She stopped in front of him again her golden eyes focusing in his raised eyes.
“To say death is my only freedom makes a false promise of sending me home.” The man said coldly.
Again the women smiled, a sly and knowing smile. “Death is only one way offered, there is another but the path is treacherous and not easily traveled.” She spoke softly before turning back and taking the steps slowly back to her chair and picking up her glass cup. “Death would be the quicker way, but I’m asking you, are you willing to win your freedom?”
    “And how would I win?”
“By your strength alone.” The women said. “I have a small amount of influence and no small fortune.” She watched as the man looked to her with a curious glint in his eye. “I can fund you for the best weapons and armor and the best doctors.”
“And how will this set me up for home?”
“I did say I had some influence.” She said taking a sip of her beverage.. “I can whisper in the ears of the right people if you get far enough in the games.”
“This will guarantee my freedom?” The man asked sounding as if he did not fully believe the prospect of potential freedom, should he survive.
“Only if you can survive long enough for me to arrange it.” The women said finally sitting back down and resting one slender leg across the other. “You have a chance, but I’m the only ally you’ll find in your struggle to return home.”
There was a long pause of silence. “My name is Arrun.”

Default A slice of life - Chapter 1

Mid summer and it was still comfortably warm. The streets were empty save for the few that moseyed down the sidewalks, like me. The sun was lazily making its way down to its bed while the rest of the world kept going about its business.
I made my way down the street quietly, hands in my pockets and headphones on with my music up. It was just my everyday routine after work; stop by The Dollar Store, grab something to eat, then be on my way again.
Once in awhile a car would pass by on the street but I never really gave them more than a glance, if they honked. There are plenty of people in this town I know but very few of them I consider friends and fewer I called Enemies. Things were pretty relaxed in this town, No one tried to kill each other but no one really went out of their way to help each other either.
Everything seemed like the normal everyday routine. I nodded to people I knew on the streets that I saw there regularly. Nothing seemed to be new nowadays. Not since my mother passed, I missed her smile. She always seemed to surprise me even when the days seemed so dull, Now that was gone and things were back to their same shades of gray with out any small fireworks of color every once and awhile.
I stopped at the cross walk and watched as a car passed me by. The car itself was not so interesting. It was a new looking, Silver painted simple car that was well tended. It was more of the person sitting in the back of it.
A girl or young women I should say considering she looked around the same age as me and I was nineteen bordering twenty. She had Long golden hair that slipped past her shoulders and rested on her chest as she leaned back staring off into the distance with bright blue eyes.
She was pretty but that was all that I thought about her as I watched the car drive out of sight. She didn’t look like anyone I remotely knew so she had to be visiting. I continued on my way to the dollar store wondering who she could be visiting before shrugging it off.
My trip into the store was nothing more than that grabbing a lunchable and a large drink, paying for it and walking right back out again. of course all the people that worked there greeted me and told me to have a good day before I slipped out the door, which I kindly returned. Before too long I was heading down my street, Lined with old apartments some of them run down so much they were no longer used for living in.
Pushing the door open and then shutting it with my foot I slipped into the small kitchen. Opening the lunchable I stuck it into the microwave and put it in for a few minutes while I opened my drink and took a sip. When the microwave beeped I opened it and carefully took it out attempting not to burn my fingers.
Once cooled off enough I held it in my hand and moved around the counter to the small living room Where I seated myself in my comfy chair, It had been my mother's and it always made me feel a bit better to sit there. As if she was still with me.
I picked up the remote and tossed it lightly in the air before catching it again and switching the TV on and started flipping through the channels with one hand while eating with my other hand.
I had been peacefully enjoying my show when my front door burst open with a loud bang making me jump up almost spilling the rest of my drink.
“Dude! Ryan! Guess who's in town?!”
I sank back into my chair with a heavy sigh as I heard my friends voice calling through the halls searching for me no doubt. “Who?” I called mostly uninterested.
“Maisey!” James said coming into the room having finally found me.
I just stared blankly at him for a long moment till he shook his head and tried again. “Maisey, The blond haired chick that everyone used to call Shorty or Scritter.”
I was silent for a moment and then let out a soft “Oh...” as it finally came to me. “The girl from school so many years ago? She’s back?” I asked. I didn’t really know her but I knew of her. She had dated Alex for a while, A cool kid that I didn’t know personally. They had gone out for several years actually and seemed to be getting on fine but it was shortly before she left that he suddenly broke up with her. Shortly after she had left that was the last that had been heard from her for several years.
“Yup she’s back and I bet Alex well be off to see her as soon as he realizes.”
    “Realizes what?”
    “She’s moving back.” James exclaimed.
    “With her parents?”
“Don’t think so.” James said sitting himself down in another chair and leaned back. “The house over in the richer sections, not too far from her parents, was sold not to long ago I bet it's her.”
“Are you sure?” I asked doubtfully.
“Psh dude she’s rich remember? her ma and pa.”
I only shook my head in response. It was not like it mattered I didn’t know her it would just be another face that would be walking around the town once and awhile.
“Dude.” My friend finally sighed. “She’s hot... I mean she used to be cute but Man she’s a woman now.”
“Doesn't matter.” I said leaning back taking a sip of my drink once more. “She’s a rich girl what would she want with a couple of slum dawgs like us?”
Thing went silent between us, all but the TV which was still playing on a commercial for five Minute pizzas.

Default A slice of life - Chapter 2

    “Ryan.”
I looked up as my name was called. My boss motioned to the back room with a troubled look. I could only think the worse as I quietly handed over the job to my partner and slipped out from behind the counter.
I entered the room and quietly turned to face my boss. He motioned me to sit and I slowly took a seat never taking my gaze from him.
He took a deep breath and let it out slowly buying time for what he had to say. “I’ve got to drop you.” she said suddenly.
I didn’t even blink and I could not bring myself to say anything.
“I’m sorry Ryan...” He started But I stood cutting him off. “Its fine.” Was all I could manage to say as I started for the door. Before anymore could be said I was out both doors and walking down the street. Honestly I was more startled than I wanted to admit things seemed more gray than they had ever been.
My head was down my dark brown bangs covering my eyes as I counted the lines that separated each slab of concrete my mind moving painfully slow as I took in that I had just lost my job, My only means of surviving. The pay had been small but at least it had been enough to keep me under shelter and with something to eat.
I took a step back as I ran into something, Actually as I looked I realized it was someone. It was the girl I had seen in the car yesterday and upon a closer look it could only be Maisey. “Uh oh I’m s-sorry.” I managed to get out as I tried to help her up.
“Ah no that's alright.” She said dusting herself off before looking up at me. “I was not paying attention to where I was.”
    “Neither was I.” I admitted.
A small smile passed over her lips but somehow it just didn’t seem... real.
“Well I have to move or I’ll be late and they will never forgive me.”
“Um, I’ll escort you.” I found myself saying. Why, I didn’t have any idea.
“No need for that I know where I’m going.”
“Ya well... I sorta knocked you down it's the least I can do.”
Another sorta of real sort of fake smile passed over her lips but she didn’t argue. “Fine then, I’m heading over to the Northington mall.” She said picking up her small bag which I had failed to notice till now.
“Meeting some friends?” I asked as we started to walk. Again that smile passed over her lips. It was pretty but it still just did not seem to be real no matter how much I looked at it. Maybe she really was some rich brat just trying to be nice.
“Ya, Really old friends.” She said with a soft sigh.
I could not help but notice the sigh was a bit wistful. “Something bad about that?” I asked but she only shook her head for a reply as we walked along.
“Its Ryan right?” She asked suddenly. Surprised that she had, at the very least, guessed my name I simply nodded.
“Well...” She started softly. “I know they might not approve but I’m going to higher some help for the house.”
“I don’t see why not.” I said with a shrug.
“I’m not looking for people who are ‘qualified’ but people who ‘need’ the job.”
“That's not bad.” I looked over at her but she was looking on ahead as I continued. “Some of us here need the job and will be willing for whatever we can get.”
She stopped abruptly and glanced over at me for a moment. “I know.” she said softly as the studied me closely “That's why I’m doing it.”
Somehow that was both surprising and not. She didn’t seem like a rich brat girl that might be first thought of.
We started walking once more, Shortly after we could see the northington mall. “Are you going to insist on escorting me right to the door?” There was a hint of a jest and amusement in her voice.
I shrugged. “Are you going to insist that I don’t?” I gave her a smile that she returned with one of her own. This time it seemed more real but she quickly turned as her name was called out. Walking up to us where three other girls that I knew quite well.
“What are you doing Maisey?! Keeping us waiting like that!” They stopped turning their gaze to me scrutinizing me with disgust. “Oh...”
“Nice to see you too.” I responded dryly.
They ignored me instead turning to Maisey. “What are you doing with him?” Their small high pitch voices grated against my eardrums while I quietly ground my teeth at their tone.
“He was showing me around.” Maisey said simply unblinking and calm. “You know it's been a long time since I’ve been here I might have lost my way.” I could see that none of them believed it but they only frowned.
“Fine.” One drawled quietly fishing out her wallet and before I could say anything had shoved a few dollars into my hand before turning on her heels while taking Maisey’s hand and started to pull her away.
I blinked quietly at the money in my hand half tempted to drop it like a snake but then sighed and shoved it into my pocket looking up to see Maisey peeking back at me and waving with her free hand before they vanished through the doors.
I sighed after a moment turning I started heading home once more. I wondered how long it would stay that way without my job. I stopped for a moment, Maisey had said she was hiring.. maybe I could find something there for me to do... at least I would have something. I would have to check later for now I might as well get myself home though I would more than likely not be eating tonight...

    Default Unnatural - Prologue

“What is it old friend?” A voice asked wryly as the door closed behind a tall, tired looking figure. The room in which both beings stood was dark, lit only by a single candle that burned low and was very close to putting itself out by its own melted wax.
The second being sat hunched at a small desk in front of an open window revealing the moonless sky. “Orethon.” The man spoke a greeting in a raspy voice before pushing himself to stand revealing that he was a head shorter than his companion.
“You sent for me claiming that it was of grave importance.” Orethon folded his hands in his sleeves eyeing the other. “What could be of so much importance Proteus? It is the celebration of the new year.”
“The darkness...” The other man hissed, he was agitated. “It has plans and we have reason to fear them.” He began the go through papers piled at a small table muttering to himself all the while.
“I’m beginning to fear for your health Proteus... you have spent months on end in this tower, you hardly eat, you never sleep.”
“There's no time!” The man shouted his face hidden by the shadow but just the hint of panic, or insanity made his voice far more crisp. “There are signs! signs that I must find, decipher and study so that we know what is to come!”
“The darkness has not made a move in decades, the creatures that remain of the forgotten times have been in hiding...”
“But they are there! they still stalk our kind for centuries and they still snatch children and unwary traveler alike!”
“...Yes...” Orethon grudgingly gave ground to his companion as he continued to riffle through stacks of paper. For a moment all that could be heard was the sound of flipping paper the shuffling of feet on stone and harsh mutterings.
With a sizzle and a small puff of smoke the candle went out leaving the two in almost complete darkness, only the faint starlight was able to cast ill-defined shadows in the room.
With a crash and panic stricken cry bursts of bright light lit up the sky with loud bangs and booms the vibrated through the very air. Orethon was able to locate Proteus huddled on the floor shivering uncontrollably, with the bursts of light lighting his way he quickly made his way over to the cowering man.
    “Proteus...Proteus my friend...”
“He’s close...” The older man gasped his form shuddering in the elfs grip. “He’s closing in... He will have a new body, spirit and power...”
Outside there was a cheer of millions of people celebrating the new year. The noise was almost deafening if it was not for Orethon’s keen hearing he would not have heard the next words his friend spoke before passing.
    “A child of unnatural nature...”

At sunrise Orethon stood to the side watching as his friends casket, housing his lifeless body, pale and thin as it was, lowered into a grave. How had he past? he had not been in the best condition but still, had the shock of the fireworks been too much for his old body? And his words...
    “A child of unnatural nature...”
“Proteus... what do you mean?! Proteus!”
Watching in silence as those of close relation, friends and comrades lined the hole with flowers and wishing well on his after life before they silently turned away. He waited till the last flower had fallen on the piling farewells before he made his appearance by the tomb.
“You passed too quickly my friend.” He rasped, his soft voice full of emotion. “But all life must pass I suppose and you have lived long for one of your kind, rest well my friend...”
That night Orethon returned to his deceased friends study to gather his research, pack it away neatly and bring it back with him to his home lands. He could not help but feel that he owed it to Proteus to keep his work safe and continue his study, whatever that may have been. And his words, The more and more he thought on them the more they disturbed him, mayhaps his friends sanity was not what was in question but his fear.
It was not until Orethon had ruffled through half of his friend papers that he spotted an unusual tome shoved awkwardly under a bookshelf. Curiously He approached and slid the book out and blew the dust off wiping a cobweb from its corner as he lifted it to the now cleared table.
The old book was bound in a hide of sorts, A blue dragon’s hide, Deep in color as the darkness of deep waters. It smelled of oil and smoke. It was sealed with a binding that was too tight to have been closed with anything but magic. Closing his eyes Orethon placed a hand on the binding and began to murmur words that echoed softly off the walls.
With a snap the bindings came alive wrapping themselves around the unsuspecting Elf’s arm lashing out at his face. Stumbling back he struggled to pull the thing off but to no avail. He crashed into a chair toppling over into a bookcase as the thing lashed out with deadly accuracy at his eyes.
Blood seeped down into his vision making it hard to maneuver as the thing persisted, no doubt it would not stop till he lay dead, what an unpleasant thought.
There was a sudden slam of the door, a shout and an almost blinding flash of light and a wave of intense heat. before it was all suddenly gone, including the living book.
Panting slightly Orethon was only just able to make out the figure of Servish looking at him intently and then turning to something smoldering on the floor a few feet away.
Wiping the blood from his eyes he pushed himself to stand and take in the tome which now lay open and unmoving. “Protection curse...”
“Yes but for what reason? and a curse of all things...” Suddenly the stout dwarf turned to him. “What were you thinking Orethon?”
“How was I supposed to know that it was a curse? and not just a protection spell?”
“You're not, that's why you bring it to me.” Servish said gruffly.
Orethon only could shake his head at this before he laid his sights on the book once more. “But of all things... a curse... and who would cast it on such an item?”
“Well it was in Proteus’s study.”
“You are not suggesting that He dabbled in black magic?” Orethon’s voice held an edge to it.
“I’m merely going off that fact that it was in his possession.”
“Maybe he had found it... and was trying to find something from it.”
“Or hiding something in it.” The dwarf muttered.
Making no reply the Elf kneeled down beside the open book tentatively reaching out and laying a hand on its pages but found no more life in it. Then withdrawing his hand he was then able to see the words written on the page. “We get the council together, now.” There was was no argument only a grunt from the dwarf and the quick steps of his retreat.
Orethon knew that it would be a few days before they would be able to gather all of the old mages but time was ticking and now he felt the fear his friend had known creeping into his being as he shut the book and stuffed it into an empty sack and out of sight.

Default Saints and Monsters ~ Monster school - Prologue

There is more to our world. There is more than just our world, More than just what our eyes see, our ears hear, our body's feel. There is the unexplained, the unseen, the unheard.
What our world hides from us or perhaps what hides from us in our world is part of our reality even if we never seem to encounter it ourselves. It is there and to an extent, everyone is aware of the unnatural, even if they do not wish to admit to it.
There are some who claim to interact with spirits, Hunt witches, summon demons, commune with angels and there are those who scoff at the unexplained and the miracles they witness for themselves, trying to find a reasonable explanation that does not involve something they do not understand.
If only the human race could remember the truth about the past, their past and the past of the monsters and saints that surround them.
The past that spoke of true demons, the past that spoke of true angels and those who were blessed and cursed by their hands. The rise of monsters and the rise of saints. The reign of darkness and the rise of light and the turmoil that has never ceased between them.
Perhaps what the future holds will remind them, if the world is not shattered first.

Default Wolfs eye - Prologue ~ legends

Long ago, when the earth was still young and mankind was still in its infancy. Goblins and orcs and other such monsters roamed and ruled the earth with blood and fear.
They killed at will and for the fun of watching pain. Men fought each other and monsters alike. Blood and death covered the world for years.
The god Hades watched from below in his prison. An outcast to the depths of shadow for his cruelty and black heart. He made these monsters that covered the earth in war and death.
The gods of light saw this and were saddened. They sent demons and shapeshifters the help the people of earth. They fought the vile creatures and drove them back to the shadow.
The people rejoiced and thought this the end. But this was not to be… Hades fumed at this in his dark lair he planed would not give up. So the war of shadows began demons and shapeshifters, men and women fought for three days and four nights. Many deaths occurred but on the fourth day they drove the monsters back.
Hades raged that day. But he formed a plan and had it put forward the next day. He sent a messenger to the demons and shapes sifters a young goblin named slime.
Slime did as his master bided and went to the demons first.
Now being demons they were more power hungry and agreed to go with slime.
He went to the shape shifters next the shape shifters were wise and wished nothing for power. Or some were… few shapeshifters went and few demons stayed.
Those who went with slime expected great power but Hades had other ideas. He had seen the strength of these demons and their companions but shape shifters didn’t bother him they were weak compared to demons. He would give the demons horns making them think they had great power.
These horns would make those who wear them obey his command. They would do his work for him.
The gods of light saw this and were angered so they cursed the demons that had gone to Hades. That when death came they would not feel warmth to fall in darkness never again to see the light.
Hades attacked the shape shifters who refused to fight their long lost friends and so were killed. This war was called the demonic wars.
Years passed and the curse was long forgotten. After the war it is said the shapeshifters fled. And to this day it is said that there are no shape shifters left and demons were locked away for eternity...
    But what do humans know...

Default Saints and Monsters ~ Monster school - Chapter 1

Meia looked out the tinted windows and past the gates at the bustling courtyard of the school. There was a gathering of all kinds of kids her age, but not one of them was human. Even those who walked around in human form she could make out the shadows that followed them, the hulking forms that gave them away, at least to her.
She’d seen this all her life, their presence no longer frightened her. But suddenly finding herself near such a large group of nothing but monsters made her gut knot up and her hands sweaty. Why was she here? She was not a monster, had no monster abilities to speak of. Was she going to be used as food? Or bait? Or -
Meia gave a start as the door opened. Looking at the man that stood on the other side, though her eyes focused on the shadow that stood behind him, hulking and twisted. There were monsters here… she didn’t recognize from her usual encounters.
“It's time, Stick close to me and I shall take you to your rooms.” The man said with a deep set voice. It stepped back, allowing her to climb out slowly. No one really seemed to pay her mind, not noticing her among the hundreds of other human looking kids wandering around the yard. Following closely behind her escort she glanced around at the school, pulling down the sleeves of her jacket. It was huge, the campus was green, with some nice trees and flowers, Contrasting the desert wasteland that seemed to surround it on the other side of the gates and beyond the cliffs that seemed to encompass the school.
There seemed to be a stone statue in the center of the yard that students were surrounding. There was one of those shadows around it, but with so many people crowded around it it was hard to make out, When she looked closer… she couldn’t make out any signs of life, there was no faint glow of a soul, was that someone who’d been turned to stone? And maybe died? Could she still see a true form after a monster died? She’d never run into that instance, no that must be someone else’s shadow but there was something about that statue, the troubled look of the face of the boy made her swallow. Most statues in the middle of a school ground represented something, so what did this represent?
It didn’t take long for it to pass out of sight with the pressing throng around it. She looked back to the back of the man escorting her, trying not to draw attention to herself, though she got a few looks from the students inside, none of them seemed to realize anything different about her.
Hall after hall they walked through, even the inside of the school seemed to be vast, She was afraid she’d get lost on her own, worse she was afraid of running into the students on her own. Was she a student? Or something else?
“Here we are, Dorm room 34.” The man grunted before opening the door for her. Peering in she could see the kitchen right to her Left, a small counter with a stove, microwave, a pair of sinks and a fridge. There was a small pantry at the end as well. Beyond that was a small living area with a set of old couches and on either end of the room were doors, both leading to a bedroom each.
“Your roommate doesn't appear to be here. Pick whichever room you want.” The man said firmly putting a hand on her back and pushing her in before standing in the doorway as if he expected her to make a run for it. She wasn’t stupid enough to think she had a chance. She passed the entrance to the kitchen and stopped in the living room. Should she take the door to the far left or the door directly to her right? She supposed it didn’t really matter, the rooms were probably both exactly the same.
She turned to the right and placed her hand on the handle before glancing at the man who was still watching her, unmoving. She finally opened the door and stepped in. The room itself was rather bare, a decent bed in the corner, a tiny night stand and a decent desk beside it, A bookshelf at its foot. There was a small dresser and a small closet. She turned to look at the door to the bathroom which stood open, the bathroom was a steady color of dusty gray and white, nothing fancy but nothing too much of an eyesore.
The front door clicked shut and when she peeked back out the man was gone. She sighed before wandering over to the bed and sitting down. She wasn’t really sure how to feel, it looked like she was considered a student, but she couldn’t fathom why. She looked to her hands as she set. She was a medium and that was all, she had the ability to see spirits, to see shadows, to see a soul she couldn’t transform, she couldn’t wield an element she didn’t have immense strength.
She frowned as her stomach growled, pressing her hands against her tummy she felt it protest as she hadn’t eaten for most of the day. She wondered if there was anything edible in the Kitchen, this room didn’t appear to have been used for a while but nothing was that dusty.
Pushing up from the bed she made her way back into the living room and glanced at the door across from her, who would her room mate be? A werewolf? A vampire? There was more than just that, the possibilities were endless, she just hopped they didn’t immediately see her as food.
Entering the kitchen she opened the fridge, it was on but it was empty. Checking the pantry turned out to be just as fruitless, what was left was out of date by 5 years or more. She covered her mouth at the thought of what might be left and decided she would rather take her chances going to the cafeteria.
She took the few cans that were left on the shelves and dumped them in the trash before brushing off her hands and testing the water. It worked fine, looking a little gray at first but clearing out over the course of a few seconds. Everything seemed to work, she just didn’t have anything to cook. She hadn’t seen any decent towns to shop at either so she wondered if this little kitchen would turn out being useless.
She turned and leaned against the counter pressing one hand to her stomach again as it whined. She would rather take her chances wandering down to the cafeteria, but even now she didn’t want to leave the room. What to do?
There was a soft puft sound from the living room, a soft flash of purple light lighting up the kitchen wall in front of her before she heard the most heart rattling shriek from behind her. Meia dropped her ears clapping over her ears as she crouched behind the counter as she could feel the sound reverberate through her body making her heart pound with the very sudden appearance of something in the room.
The shrieking stopped but it still rang in her ears for a long moment before she could hear her own breath, hard and horse. A shaking hand covered her mouth trying to stifle the sound. Whatever had just appeared in the room with her, she didn’t want it's attention. She could hear its breathing, heavy and irritated, it had to be angry what she thought was its footsteps sounded heavy but after a moment she could hear the floorboards shift and the air in the room changed. It was silent for a long moment before she heard lighter footsteps walk into the left bedroom, she didn’t hear the door close but a soft cracking filled the air in that direction.
Everything in the room stopped moving when the clicking stopped, her body remained shaking on the ground with her mouth covered with her cold hands. It felt like hours before her body unlocked, her hands collapsing into her lap as her body felt like jelly, she didn’t trust herself to get up and she didn’t plan on it, maybe not ever again.
She started again at a sudden knock at the door. “Hello?” A Male voice called in.
Meia let out another breath, Shaky but more relieved that it atleast sounded friendly. The knock came again, this time more forceful. “Hello?!”
Meia slowly got to her knees before reaching up and using the counter to pull herself up. She couldn’t help but look at the other bedroom, no movement came from it now as the knocking continued. What was surprising though was that what would have been the door opening was now only a solid gray stone wall.
“Open the door or I’m going to!”
“C-coming.” Meia called and made her way to the door, finally opening it to peer out at the two standing on the other side. Two adults, One was a tall black skinned man with a neatly trimmed black beard, He was muscular and fit wearing a clean combat outfit. The other was a tall skinny women almost fragile looking with soft gold hair that faded into a deep violet near the tips, A pair of purple leather wings rested upon her back and a small heart tipped tail rested against the floor, She wore Purple Crystal earrings on her elf like ears and crystal bracelets along her tail that clinked softly when she moved back.
Both adults looked to her in surprise as she opened the door. Glancing at each other before looking back down to her. “Your roommate.” The women asked softly. “Is he here?”
Were they talking about whatever it was that appeared in the living room? She felt herself shiver before nodding. “I-i think so.”
“May we come in?” The man asked.
Meia stepped to the side allowing the two to come in, she assumed they were staff or maybe teachers. They walked in and looked between the two bedrooms, though it was clear which one her new roommate had gone into.
“Interesting.” The man said gently touching the wall as the women stood behind him. Meia couldn’t help but look at the shadows that followed them, but she couldn’t understand what they were, especially not the women's.
“He’s walled himself in there good.” The woman murmured before glancing over her shoulder at Meia. “Did anything happen?” She asked.
Meia shook her head. “He just kind of.. Appeared then went into the room.” Well… that wasn’t completely true but he hadn’t attacked her or anything.
The women turned fully to her. “Are you alright?” She asked.
“Ya, I’m just…” Her stomach growled loudly. “A little hungry.” She finished. Nodding the women turned back to look at her companion, who was studying the wall with a little too much excitement.
“Tobi, why don’t you escort this poor girl to the cafeteria.”
Tobi looked up. “But I have to take care of this guy and lay down the rules for him.” If Meia wasn’t mistaken he almost sounded like he was making an excuse. To eager to see what was on the other side of that wall.
“I’ll take care of that.” Hinet said a little more firmly.
“Alright.” Tobi said sounding like he was holding back a disappointed sigh as he pushed himself back to his feet and faced Meia with a smile. “Alright, follow me little miss.”
Meia didn’t say anything as he walked past glancing back at the women who had approached the wall before turning and following him out. They turned down one of the halls before the man looked down to her.
    “So what's your name?”
    “Meia, Meia Merdiian.” She replied.
    “And what are you exactly?”
“I’m human.” She said looking on ahead.
“Are you sure there’s nothing more to that?”
“I can see monsters.” She replied after a short pause. “Even when they disguise themselves, I can also see and speak with spirits, souls. Nothing fitting for a monster school.”
“I wouldn’t be so sure.” He said. “Though you don’t give off the ora, there has to be a reason why you are here.”
“I’m not sure that I agree, unless you plan on using me as a meal or bait there’s no foreseeable reason why I am here as I am a human with very limited abilities not related to most monsters.”
The man grunted shaking his head. “You may find out more beyond what you already know about yourself.”
    “If I survive.”
    “That’s a very negative attitude.”
“Sorry for being so negative after being abducted from my comfortable home and forced into a world with which I do not belong.” Meia muttered shoving her hands into her pockets. What was her mother doing right now? And when would she find out that Meia was missing?
“But you are a part of it somehow if you can see things other people can not.” Tobi said before reaching out and pushing open the door they had come to. “Go get yourself something to eat, I’ll be close by.”
Meia’s eyes roamed around the cafeteria, looking over the physical bodies and noting the shadows that lingered around them. There were so many… monsters. She was rooted to the spot for a moment, no one gave her to much of a glance at first but the moment she stepped through the door she could feel some eyes fall on her, not all of them but there seemed to be those with keener sense then the rest that could pick her out… She swallowed and forced herself to keep moving.
Tobi was right behind her, which drew more eyes but she appreciated his presence, at least right now. She picked up a tray and realized her hands were shaking again. She couldn’t blame herself, not in a situation like this. She moved through the mostly empty line picking out some food.
When she stopped to look for a empty table that she could sit at. Something whizzed past her head, hitting the stonewall and snapping in half followed by a thump, Meia hadn’t even the time to jump back as she looked down to see a severed scarecrow’s head rolling to a stop at her feet.
She could feel it, the waiting anticipation for a scream, or a cry of fear, She bit her lip tasting the bitterness of her own blood before she set the tray back on the counter and leaned down. Her hands shook but she forced her body to move, she wouldn’t give them the satisfaction. The head was light, full of straw and though it looked very dead she had a feeling it belonged to someone, There was a soft glowing D on the forehead, she wondered if that was any indication of who’s it was. When she stood again she looked out into the cafeteria, looking across the taken back expressions as she determinedly looked for the heads owner. He wasn’t hard to spot, sitting quietly at a table halfway turned towards her, a rather beautiful looking girl set across from him, looking mixed between surprise and irritation.
Meia made her steps deliberate and steady as she approached, gently setting the head next to the severed arm lying on the table. She could only assume that he needed help reattaching his severed limbs but she wasn’t sure he wanted her help, or if she wanted to help. She turned to grab her tray, intending to tell Tobi that she’d rather eat in her room only to feel a light hand on her shoulder, making her tens. When nothing happened she turned back watching the Scarecrow take his hand from her shoulder and offer it. It didn’t take her long to realize that it was a gesture of thanks, for he couldn’t speak at the moment. It was still a little unnerving how his body was moving without a head.
She only hesitated for a moment before she took his hand, shaking it lightly.
“Good job.” Tobi said suddenly from beside her, but his eyes were looking across the room, maybe looking for whoever had done that. It didn’t take long as there was suddenly a commotion behind a few crowded tables and a kid was lifted into the air and tossed to the ground. Tobi moved forward touching the kid's forehead and a softly glowing D formed on his forehead.
That mark again, What was it for? Meia wondered quietly
“You're not a first year, you should know better.” The kids response was only a moan as he laid on the floor.
Meia frowned as Tobi came back over. “I think I’d rather eat in my room.”
“You could eat with us.” The girl pipped up before Tobi could answer.
    “I think that’s a good idea.”
Meia frowned again but looking between the smiling girl and the black skinned teacher she didn’t think she’d win so she quietly went back to grab her tray before returning to the table and set down between the Girl and the Scarecrow. Tobi seemed to have vanished in that short time and she wasn’t sure if she should be nervous about that or not.
“I’m Andrea serpantien.” The girl said smiling as she placed a hand on her chest. Meia looked up from her tray. The girl had flawless skin, Smooth blond hair that fell nearly to the floor as she set and blue eyes that anyone would envy. With the shadow lingering behind her Meia could tell that the girls true form was of a very large serpent.
Andrea’s hand moved to point to the Scarecrow. “That’s Scarecrow.” Original, She thought but didn’t say so out loud as she looked to Scarecrow who waved. He wasn’t your typical scarecrow, even stuffed full of straw his features were far more intimidating than your typical crow scaring scarecrow, and the hulking shadow behind him made him even more so.
    “Meia Merdiian.”
    “Meia, that’s a nice name.”
    “Thanks.”
“Do you have any idea why you are here?” Andrea asked taking a bite of her food while Meia quietly chewed on her own.
“No.” She mumbled before taking another bite. She covered her mouth slightly as she continued to speak. “Not a clue, One day I was just abducted from my room and brought here to day.”
“Hum.” Andrea opened her mouth thoughtfully but her attention went to Scarecrow as soft crackling and rustling sounds drew her attention as well. Root like tentacles had sprouted from Scarecrow's shoulder and neck, reaching out and attaching to the roots that had reached out from his arm and head.
Meia couldn’t help but put one hand to her mouth to keep herself from being sick as she watched it all reattach and Scarecrows eyes glow back into life. She coughed and swallowed the bale back as Scarecrow stretched slowly.
“It's not uncommon.” His voice was deep but hushed, not quite gravely. “I myself was picked up and brought here out of the blue, But I’ve learned how dangerous it is for humans and monsters to interact.”
“And yet I’m here.” Meia said setting her fork down to let her stomach settle. “I’m not a monster.” She repeated, how many times had she said that now? “Besides my abilities to see spirits and monsters I have nothing I could remotely begin to defend myself with.”
Scarecrow and Andrea exchanged glances. “Are you sure?”
“I’m a medium, not a monster.” Meia sighed. “Not that I’ve done much to explore my powers but being a medium does not harbor much more than seeing and communicating with spirits that can’t manifest to normal people.”
    “And what about seeing monsters?”
Meia shrugged. “I can see your current form, but there’s a shadow that lingers behind you that reveals your true form to me.” She said picking her fork back up. “Once and awhile I can spy someone’s soul but that’s not very helpful either, it really doesn't tell me anything, only that you're a living entity.”
“Well.” Tobi’s voice came from behind her again. “You won't have to worry about being attacked, I’ve assigned you one of my best students, you won't see him around but you’ll be safe.” The teacher said with a smile. “And while you're here we can teach you to defend yourself.”
Meia looked over her shoulder at him, unconvinced they could teach her and her weaker body to compete with these monsters around her.
“There are humans out there who have successfully defended themselves against monsters.” He pointed out.
“Ya?” She mumbled taking another bite of food. “It's going to take you more than just a school year to get me to that stage.” She told him. “My body’s been pretty inactive for years, I’m not in that kind of shape.”
“There’s more than just physical defense.” Tobi said knowingly making Meia look back over her shoulder to look at the teacher with interest. “You’ll learn.” He assured her before patting her on the shoulder and turning making his way out of the cafeteria.
She wasn’t sure how she felt about her temporary guardian leaving her with a promised invisible guardian.
“Its Lizard.” Scarecrow said turning back to the table.
“Lizard?” Andrea asked before Meia could.
Scarecrow nodded to them. “He’s some kind of lizard man, I assume anyways no one really see’s him, he tends to use his invisibility to move around the school unseen and avoid the rest of us.”
“Invisible.” Meia thought back on the boy that had been lifted up, she hadn’t been able to see anyone holding him. But if her new guardian was invisible that meant he was still around. Without really realizing why, she looked up, looking up to the ceiling. Sure enough there was a shadow clinging to the ceiling, though she could not see who it was following. It seemed to start when it realized she was staring at it so she quietly looked back down to her food and took another bite.
“He’s up there isn’t he?” Scarecrow asked. She nodded mutely in response as she took another bite.
“That’s pretty amazing.” Andrea murmured as she looked up at the ceiling but clearly couldn’t see anything. “Being able to see when someone is a monster, are you able to tell what kind they are?”
Meia thought for a moment as she swallowed. “Only if I know what it is.” She said before pointing her fork at Andrea. “You're a serpent, your shadow is a very large coiled snake.” She said then pointed to Scarecrow. “I’m really not sure how to explain your shadow.” Pointing to another girl at another table she continued. “Her shadow kind of resembles a large rat, I can only assume she’s some kind of wererat while the girl next to her is some sort of arachnid monster.”
The other two followed her fork looking somewhat surprised. “That’s impressive.” Scarecrow said.
    “I guess.”
“Don’t sell yourself short.” Andrea said. “I’m sure there will be plenty for you to learn here.”
“We’ll see.” Meia said glancing back up at the ceiling as the shadow looking down on her.
