Meaning:
The Magician represents the first step towards conscious awareness. He indicates that we are the masters of our own lives and always have the ability to create the life we choose. His appearance in a tarot reading reminds you that your relationship to the Universe can help you manifest your dreams, goals and desires. The Magician is associated to the number one. In this case, the number one represents individuality, uniqueness and innovation. One is a number of action, thus, the Magician is a card that encourages us to pursue any opportunity that comes our way. He reminds us that, at our core, we have the power to influence the world around us. He is the card of manifestation. The Magician encourages us to become aware of the tools and skills we have been given. When he appears in a tarot reading, know that you have the skills to change or shift any situation that currently challenges you. Symbolically, the Magician depicts the connection between man and the divine. He represents the conscious link between the world of heaven and the world of man. He has the ability to use the four elements (pentacles, wands, swords and cups) to manifest his goals. He has all the tools he needs and has the ability to produce the life he desires. He is the master of the physical plane and through his relationship with his higher-power; he can co-create his reality under divine influence. The Magician is a master at self-promotion. His is the ultimate symbol of self-confidence and prompts you to find the confidence you need by trusting in yourself and the universe. Unfortunately, the Magician’s power to transform the world around him can be misused. The tarot card meanings of the Magician can also represent dominion, manipulation and even trickery. He can serve as a warning that there too much emphasis on controlling outcomes situations or people.
Spoiler: II - 2 - The High Priestess
Meaning:
In the Tarot sequence, the High Priestess is associated with the number two. The number two symbolizes balance, harmony, diplomacy and partnership. The High Priestess gives direction to the creativity and individualism of the Magician. She is feminine power, controlling the life force and all its mystery. Unlike the focused energy of the Magician, the High Priestess is more passive in nature. Her mastery lies in her knowledge of the inner world of intuition and spiritual enlightenment. The High Priestess is depicted as sitting between two opposing pillars, one of positive power and the other of negative. This combination of positive and negative energies, which are unifying opposing forces, is what the universe is made of. From a psychological perspective, the pillars represent the conscious and unconscious mind. Since The High Priestess sits directly between them, she is capable of reaching into the realm of the unconscious and delivering its wisdom to the conscious. Her world is that of dreams, visions and the embodiment of all the mysteries of the universe. Her wisdom helps us to tap into the collective unconscious. In Tarot reading, one of the negative Tarot card meanings associated with The High Priestess is a warning of emotional instability. She can represent a disconnect between the unconscious and conscious mind. Too much unconscious material can flood rational thought. Consequently, one may find him or herself in a world dictated by their feelings without the capacity to alter their reasoning.
Spoiler: III - 3 - The Empress
Meaning:
Following the High Priestess comes the Empress. Her appointed number is three, which represents completion, procreation, fertility and union. Because the High Priestess represents two opposing forces, the Empress follows with the introduction of a new, unifying principle. She is the card of creation. Therefore, the Empress is associated with childbirth, creativity, new energy and productivity. The Empress is the mother of all things and personifies the creative power associated with the natural world. She is the mother earth using its energy to drive her feminine wisdom across the universe. In a Tarot card reading, the Empress rules the physical world and that which is tangible. Often, we find an eagle by her side which symbolically represents the bridge between heaven and earth. Unlike the Magician, her power is passive and feminine. She depicts the realm of emotion, not the realm of thought. Her association to the heavens is based on the principle that hard work and creativity can lead to a spiritual awakening. In the everyday world, The Empress represents feeling. She is fair and sympathetic and bases her decisions on her moral value system. She is dedicated to the family and concerns herself with the good of her community. The Empress is a natural diplomat and understands the difficulties people are confronted with. Therefore, she is there to console and offer her wisdom. One of the negative Tarot card meanings associated with the Empress can be her over protectiveness and maternal domination. She can hinder the development of the soul’s journey by over indulging in her role as the good mother. Should this be applied to males in a Tarot reading, the Empress can forewarn of a man overly attached to his mother. He may be unable to have a healthy and committed relationship, because he may too often, whether it be consciously or subconsciously, compare his partner's qualities to those of his mother's.
Spoiler: IV - 4 - The Emperor
Meaning:
The Emperor is the great father wielding his authority and order on the physical plane. Spiritually, he represents the soul that has been cleansed through self-restraint. In a Tarot reading, the Emperor card is the personification of true will power. He has experienced the hardships of life and, ultimately, has been set free through this wisdom. The Emperor is the companion to The Empress. Although both represent creation, The Emperor signifies creation of the will, which does not dwell in the realm of feeling and emotion. His associated number is four, which represents solid foundations, organization, reason and manifestation. In a Tarot card reading, The Emperor depicts authority and power over the tangible, physical plane of existence. He regulates the world and provides a system of laws that all men are expected to abide by. He is the leader, both trustworthy and rational. The Emperor projects his wisdom onto man expecting him to behave in a manner that incorporates control and restraint. One of the negative Tarot card meanings associated with the Emperor is his lack of sensitivity. He can at times be harsh and rigid. For women, this means that the Emperor can represent the dominating father, which forever shadows the woman's sense of self. She may find herself constantly looking for a man to structure her life and give her identity. For men, the Emperor can be the over-achieving father, leaving some feeling as though they can never live up to their father’s standards.
Spoiler: V - 5 - The Hierophant
Meaning:
The Hierophant is the wise teacher forever reminding us that there is more to life than our everyday mundane routines. He inspires us to investigate the world around us. He represents God on earth and is associated with the number five. The number five relates to progressiveness, mental inspiration, adjustment and exploration. The Hierophant is the bridge between our outer perceptions and our inner world of spirit. He is there to offer his wisdom and can be an adviser of truth. In essence, he represents man’s search for meaning. In a tarot reading, the Hierophant represents a code of ethics. He dictates what is the acceptable behavior within the structure of our society. He is the card of social order. He often represents tradition and his teachings are usually based in his desire for practicality and sensibility. Should you find the Hierophant in your tarot spread, he urges you to be humble and respectful. The Hierophant's tarot card meaning reminds us to not lose touch with the significance of spirituality. Ultimately he is there to question the morals you are living by. He may ask, “Is this who you want to be”? One of the negative tarot card meanings associated with the Hierophant can be his rigidity and intolerance. He tends to expect others to see things his way. He feels it is his obligation to correct people’s behaviors according to what he feels is acceptable. He can be cold and insensitive.
Spoiler: VI - 6 - The Lovers
Meaning:
The Lovers represents the first decision which must be made by the soul on his journey of life. The young individual must choose between staying a youth or maturing and developing his own individuality. This is the stage of separation and individuation. The Lovers symbolizes the choice between separating from one’s origins and stepping into a direction he or she is solely responsible for. It is the path to adulthood. The Lovers correlating number is six. Sixes represent peace, partnership, cooperation and self-acceptance. It is the calm after the storm. The Lovers tarot card meaning relates to finding peace through the acknowledgment of the self as a whole and distinct person. This, of course, is a process and it is often filled with periods of anxiety and sadness. Although there is great freedom in discovering one’s own independence, there is also sadness due to a loss of early attachments. In a tarot reading, the Lovers also reflect the concept of duality. There is the feminine and the masculine. There is union and individuation. The goal of the Lovers is to strike a balance between the two. You must remain an individual in a partnership. The same can be said for the masculine and feminine aspects of oneself. For the Lovers, the male represents the path of external pursuits. It is the path of self-reliance and purpose. The female represents one’s dedication to one’s internal world, a world of feeling and sensitivity. One of the negative aspects to the Lovers tarot card meanings is disunion and separation without individuation. It is the individual that has not fully individuated and, thus, tends to lose his or her sense of self in a relationship. When the Lovers reversed comes up in your tarot reading, there is always a concern that one does not have the maturity to have a successful partnership. This often manifests through infidelity, lack of commitment and inner conflict. Usually this reflects ones reluctance to have accountability. The opposite may be true as well. One may be obsessive, hedonistic and jealous.

Spoiler: VII - 7 - The Chariot
Meaning:
The Chariot is the card of conquest and triumph. He represents the ability to control one’s energy rather than be ruled by it. The depiction of the two horses he drives represents this energy. Symbolically, this relates to the chariots ability to harness his animal instincts. His self-control enables him to let the reins go. He is free to carve his own path. The correlating number is seven. Sevens represent progress, clarity and self-sufficient behavior. It is the number of spiritual reflection, and it often includes periods of contemplation and introspection. With this inner self-awareness, the chariot can focus his energy. He represents our goal-oriented motivations. The Chariot Tarot card symbolically represents the need to harness ones instinctual drives and appropriately redirect their energy. This is, in fact, one method of putting one’s intentions to work. In tarot readings, the Chariot reminds one to focus their energy and use it to their advantage. In order to manifest one’s goal, their fist must be energy or momentum behind one’s ideas. From a developmental perspective, the Chariot represents the formation of the personality. After the individuation of the Lovers, The Chariot soon finds himself exploring who he truly is. His goal is to develop his persona within the context of society. In essence, he has the opportunity to choose an identity that fits. The armor of the Chariot represents the outward expression of his personality. It is the mask of his persona firmly acknowledged by his ego, and yet, the Chariot remains firmly aware that his persona is not his true identity. He is the young man defining himself in his new world. This new knowledge enables the Chariot to understand the rules that society places upon him. He has developed ability to manipulate these rules to get what he wants. One of the negative aspects of the Chariot tarot card meanings is the idea that one that has over identified with his persona. It is the individual that does not understand that the mask is projected for convenience. His mask has been blurred with who he truly is. Ultimately, this inhibits spiritual growth. This is a painful experience as there is a disconnection between the heart and mind. When the Chariot comes up reversed in your free tarot reading, he may represent the type of person that uses their power to overshadow those who go up against him. He tends to think of himself as an optimist, but in fact, he may feel threatened by those who question him. His solution is to be tyrannical.
Spoiler: VIII - 8 - Strength
Meaning:
In many modern Tarot decks, the Strength Card follows the Chariot. However, in earlier decks, Justice was the eighth card in the numerical sequence of the Major Arcana. Justice was thought to represent the next level of development of the soul’s journey. The Justice Card represents the voice of the conscience, which helps one to find balance between ones beliefs and principles with those of their internal instincts. However, when the Rider Waite deck was published in 1910, the Strength Card was exchanged with the Justice Card. The Rider Waite deck preferred this card sequence, because of its astrological associations. Today, both sequences are considered valid, and it is really up to you to determine which order you prefer. For our purposes, I prefer to use the Strength Card as the eighth card in the Tarot Sequence. The Strength Card represents the power of inner strength. Our inner strength develops through the balance between our primal drives and higher thinking. In traditional decks, the imagery of the Strength Tarot card is of a woman soothing a lion. The lion, represents our deepest desires. He dwells in the realm of our unconscious and his primitive roar forces our instincts to act in accordance to the demands of our unconscious. The woman is the seeker, gently appeasing the lion’s urges with gentleness and patience. She represents higher consciousness, thus informing us that our elevated thinking can prove to be more powerful than our internal instincts. Often, this requires a great deal of determination and self-discipline. It is not uncommon to find some element of conflict between the two. It is not surprising that the Tarot card meanings of the Strength Card refer to courage with compassion. It takes a great deal of courage to look within the primitive self. The greatest act of bravery, however, is to choose not to loathe the darker parts of ourselves. This, in itself, is an act of compassion. The Strength Card is associated with the number eight. Eight represents power, judgment, renewal and accomplishment. In a Tarot reading, the Strength Card also relates to matters of health. In it’s upright position, the Strength Card denotes healing and recovery. This can occur both physically and emotionally. It is the card of vitality and often refers to matters of sexuality. The negative aspect of the Strength Card is the suppression or avoidance of unconscious and instinctual needs. It also represents the individual who attempts to manage the world with force and lack of compassion.
Spoiler: IX - 9 - The Hermit
Meaning:
When we come upon the Hermit in a Tarot spread, we know that we have, at last, reached the midpoint of the Major Arcana. The journey of the first half of life has reached an end. The Hermit indicates that our attentions must shift from the outside, external world to our inner selves. In many ways, this is the card of self-discovery. Some believe the Hermit indicates the beginning of spiritual enlightenment or the discovery of our spiritual selves. In a Tarot card reading, the Hermit represents the search for answers, and he will feel dissatisfied until he has completed this process. This is often a shadowy path representing the unknown. It is a journey that requires solitude and trust. However, it is not all dark along the way, as the Hermit is guided by the light of his intuition. The Hermit's correlating number is nine - the number of termination and endings. Nine has significant meaning due to the fact that it is the last single number in a sequence. This indicates the conclusion of a particular life cycle. After nine, we return to one, the number of individuality. A nine represents the end of a cycle and signifies the incorporation of all eight previous stages of development. Nine is the number of completion. The path of the Hermit is one that requires courage and self-examination. His Tarot card meaning refers to the process of letting go of traditional principles and trusting the unknown in order to evolve. He must be willing to detach from the comforts and familiarity he has become used to in order to grow in a new direction. His journey is a lonely and uncertain one, as he examines the darker, more difficult aspects of himself with the ultimate goal of a deeper self understanding. The archetypal symbolism represented by the Hermit is the wise old man and teacher. He, at times, can appear in one’s dreams or in chance encounters. The Hermit is there to help point out meaning amongst chaos. He provides the clarity needed to strive ahead even though our internal state is plagued with fear and trepidation. He is the light of a higher awareness and a translator of the greater universal message. One negative aspect of the Hermit is when he is unable to discard old ideas and remains fixed in dogmatic, inflexible beliefs. Consequently, he chooses ignorance and is unable to change. This will only further his isolation. He can be associated with loneliness and confusion. In a Tarot card reading, the negative characteristic of the Hermit may indicate that there is too much fear to embark on the spiritual journey.
Spoiler: X - 10 - The Wheel of Fortune
Meaning:
The Wheel of Fortune indicates that the second half of the soul’s journey has begun. After exploring the realm of inner dreams and visions, The Hermit enabled the unconscious to come to light. The efforts of the Hermit completed the soul’s first half of the journey; individuation of self and the establishment of ones position in society. Yet, the Hermit now understands that he is not a slave to his position to society. It’s a choice that enables him to move within society’s constructs or well outside of them. The Wheel of Fortune represents the unifying aspects of the psyche; the unconscious and conscious have converged. The Wheel of Fortune is the mandala which represents a spiritual wholeness and inner stability. In a tarot reading, the appearance of The Wheel of Fortune indicates that a major part of the journey has been reached. The individual is free from the oppressions of society. He knows his true self. He has walked through the darker parts of himself and he now is able to unite with his destiny. The correlating number to The Wheel of Fortune is ten. Ten is the first of the numbers that has double digits. It symbolizes a new beginning and the completion of a life stage. Ten is considered to be a perfect number; therefore it represents perfection, harmony, and a new beginning. Its association to the Wheel of Fortune signifies the wheels ever changing movement. The new road is presented to the individual. He is invited to either jump on the path to his destiny or choose to sit aside. The center of the Wheel of Fortune represents the universe. The spokes depict the channels that lead to Self. The Wheel of Fortunes conveys a peace of mind, the relinquishing of guilt, and the substructure of universal order. In a tarot reading, the Wheel of Fortune imparts the principles of change. Its tarot card meanings refer to the fact that nothing in this world is constant. There is always the element of uncertainty and nothing can be controlled indefinitely. The only thing that is certain is change. The Wheel of Fortune reminds us that we must learn to have acceptance and understand that all things must move forward if we are to reach enlightenment. The negative aspect of the Wheel of Fortune represents the individual who can not see the bigger picture of his journey. He remains enclosed in his own interpretation of fate. He is not unable to learn from his mistakes nor is he capable of seeing the clues that encourage him to take a different path. He remains forever tied to what he believes is his destiny. Thus, he misses important opportunities that may bring new directions.
Spoiler: XI - 11 - Justice
Meaning:
In tarot reading, Justice stands for balance and equality. Justice represents the influence of our inner self and our conscience. Justice (depicted as female) symbolizes a mature sense of self. She has found her place amongst her fellows. She is dependable, worldly, and has reached a level of prosperity and status. Yet, she still struggles with a feeling that all is not as it should be. This has to do with fact that although she has mainly served her ego and conscious mind, she has lost touch with the yearnings of her unconscious. She must, once again, strike a balance between the two. When Justice appears in a tarot spread, it informs you that the journey you are on may have to take an entirely new direction in order for justice to be served. With the repression of unconscious desires, one may find that their conscious mind either becomes consumed with things from younger age or there may be a deep depression that has slowly settled in. This is what some refer to as a mid-life crisis. In a tarot reading, Justice signifies the time to change one’s perspective. There is a need to accept the second part of one’s life. It is a journey into the realm of the inner self and requires a shift of focus away from the outer aspects of worldly interests. Justice acknowledges the need for a moral inventory. Things must be put back into balance, regardless of the consequences. Although there is a basic unfairness and lack of balance in the ordinary order of things, the true imbalance lies within the self and not in outer, worldly realities. When we strive to meet the destinies of our journeys, we must find the strength to abide by the principles of the universe. These principles are the laws which govern us. They must be learned and we must comply. This must be done to avoid serious consequences. The corresponding number for Justice is eleven. Eleven is the number of insight, idealism, wisdom and compassion. It embodies the universal laws of our world. With this in mind, it is important to acknowledge that Justice’s sword is double edged. One aspect represents law and order and the other aspect represents mercy and consideration. We must assimilate each side of the sword in order to reach enlightenment. The negative aspect to Justice is when the laws which govern us are misused or applied with too much rigidity. Much of the injustice of the world today has its roots in human failings. The scales of equality are tipped and the virtue of mercy is lost and forgotten.
Spoiler: XII - 12 - The Hanged Man
Meaning:
If there is one card in the deck that represented the ultimate act of faith, it would be the Hanged Man. In a Tarot reading, The Hanged Man signifies the awakening of a new consciousness. In this stage of the journey, The Hanged Man accepts the ultimate spiritual law that he is not just a singular being. He is part of the greater whole. He must tap into the collective unconscious and learn to let go of his self. This is a process that leads to enlightenment. The Hanged Man’s correlating number is 12. According to numerology, this has the same significance as the number 3. In this case, three represents the interaction of unity with duality. With the partnerships of the number two, comes a new birth. This birth creates a new, third dimension. One that is associated with the elements of completion and growth. In a Tarot reading, The Hanged Man tarot card meanings usually inform us that we can not go back to earlier states of consciousness, such as those from youth or early adulthood. At the same time, we can not yield to our darker shadow selves, the impulsive drives of our unconscious. Our goal is to free ourselves from both the desire for the safety of our past and from the demands of our unconscious, a difficult duality we all face. Once again, we must strike a balance between the two. However, The Hanged Man does not require an action. It requires the relinquishment of a need to control our own universe. Instead, we now hand our lives over to something greater than ourselves. In order to do this, we must be willing to let go of all the things we have learned. We no longer can depend on our intellect alone. This is an act of faith. In many ways, The Hanged Man represents the existential dilemma. Are we alone or are we part of something greater? This is the trial of this phase of development. The Hanged Man’s Tarot card meanings typically reflect the need to abandon our practical ideas for the universal wisdom that is within each of us. Our self-seeking quests for what we desire are of no significance. We must believe in a higher self that can transcend mundane awareness and tangible, immediate gratifications. When the Hanged Man appears upright in a Tarot spread, there is a strong suggestion that fulfillment and happiness can come from aligning oneself to the laws of the universe. This requires courage, strength, and most importantly, faith. For those of us who wrestle with our existential doubts and make it to the other side, there is great serenity and peace that awaits us. The negative aspect to The Hanged Man is the dreamer lost in his own dream. This is the individual who thinks only of himself and cannot see the value and beauty of the connectedness we all share. He chooses to live in a fantasy rather than in a world shared by all.
Spoiler: XIII - 13 - Death
Meaning:
Death, the Tarot card of transformation, signifies the commencement of profound change. In a Tarot reading, the Death card indicates that another life cycle has ended and a new cycle has begun. Death often represents the transition between these two chapters of life. The Death Tarot card is the continuation of The Hanged Man’s journey of surrender. Sacrifice has led to self-acceptance, and one’s concept of self has been forever altered. The old self has been discarded and a new one has yet to fully form. In death, a new birth inevitably follows. Thirteen is the corresponding number to Death. The number thirteen is made up of the numbers one and three and when added together equals the number four. Four represents stability and order. Four is the number of manifestation. Death, so often associated with chaos, actually initiates the transformation necessary to begin a new phase of life. In a Tarot spread, the Death card represents the rules of nature, which transform old life into the new. Death is not an ending, but rather a part of a greater cycle where the past lays foundations for the future. Death is part of a larger pattern. What can be seen as destructive is, in truth, the opportunity for something much greater. Death plants the seeds for the growth of tomorrow. Death is an act of generosity as it cleanses and purges the remnants of our old lives. Although there is a great deal of grief associated with death, this grief serves a productive purpose. It is our way of saying goodbye to something familiar and known, and ultimately prepares us for a new way of living. The negative aspect to the Death card is inevitability. In a Tarot reading, the Death card reminds us that death does not discriminate and has no preferences. All must eventually meet him on their journey. Death's Tarot card meanings remind us of our mortality and constantly shadows our every move. We cannot escape death nor try to make a deal with him. He represents the ultimate act of acceptance.
Spoiler: XIV - 14 - Temperance
Meaning:
Temperance is the card of moderation and restraint. It represents the mature self, one that can see beyond his own destination. This phase of the journey occurs after the experience of a symbolic death. The seeker has died and been reborn. The ego has failed him so he finally has the freedom to release it. He is left in total passivity, waiting for the new tools he will need to guide him in evaluating the world. Atlas, the angel of temperance comes and with her comes the water of new life. She is there to serve as a method for evaluation as she draws the seekers unconscious and conscious into balance. In a tarot reading, the angel of Temperance provides a new perspective: one of compromise, tranquility and compassion. The symbolic implication of the Temperance tarot card refers to its association to the Anima. In this case, it is an elevated anima, the female archetype that represents feminine power and creativity. The angel of Temperance is the moderator between one’s outer awareness and inner awareness. Thus, Temperance serves to be the voice of goodness and sound judgment. In a tarot reading, the Temperance card suggests that all things need to be handled with moderation and tolerance. Temperance reminds us that that even in its feminine form, these are traits of great strength and power. When the Temperance card comes up in a tarot spread, it can also refer to the concept of time. Temperance's tarot card meanings typically represent the flowing of time from the past to the future, life to death, and/or the merged self to an individuated self. It is this continuum that reminds us that nothing is forever and nothing is permanent. This clearly relates to the concept of reincarnation and life after death. What is most important to remember, however, is the concept that within each lifetime, we all have many deaths and rebirths. Each of these cycles offers us a deeper wisdom and understanding of our sense of purpose in the world. The negative aspect to Temperance is her association to impatience and irritation. In this case, her creative energy has no purpose. As a result the energy gets stuck in situations that are limited and confining. Sometimes this stunted energy gets directed in biased thinking and/or neurotic behavior.
Spoiler: XV - 15 - The Devil
Meaning:
Perhaps considered one of the most frightening cards in the Tarot deck, the actual interpretation of The Devil card is by no means literal. It does not represent the fallen Angel nor does it mean your life is being influenced by negative forces. The Devil tarot card represents the next step in the seekers journey. It is the phase in development where one must tap into the darker elements of the collective unconscious to further grasp one’s concept of humanity as a whole. At this stage in development, one is no longer confined to the reality of his ego. He can now go much deeper and make contact with the creative forces of his unconscious. He is ready to explore the primitive psyche of humanity. In essence, the seeker must face a new challenge. In a tarot reading, the Devil encourages us to resist the power of our primitive natures. This is a process where one must come to terms with the negative side of mankind. It is the side of us that can be violent, cruel and power hungry. With this awareness, one can deepen his experience in his journey. He has the capacity to develop deeper compassion and forgiveness for the darkness and misery we are capable of inflicting on to others. At the same time, this can be translated to one’s personal journey. One can forgive oneself for behaviors and actions that have caused harm. The Devil can initiate the acceptance of self and others as they are in their entirety. In a tarot reading, the goal of The Devil card is to encourage us to rise to the occasion, to find the parts of our selves that are capable of giving back to the world as we know it. The assignment in this part of the journey is to assimilate the darker yearnings of our natures, and at the same time, not be consumed by them. These yearnings must, ultimately, be channeled into an energy that focuses on improving the world. The Devil teaches us that all elements of the collective unconscious must be accepted and appreciated. We all have deep yearnings that may seem dark and unproductive. The important thing to remember is that we do not have to become a slave to them. Our instinctual powers are a part of life, but we certainly do not want to be chained by them. Ultimately, we must move beyond their binds by giving back to humanity as a whole. The negative aspect to the Devil card is when the seeker becomes too attached to the dark forces of the primitive psyche. Often, great power comes from the darker side of our natures. Unfortunately, this power can lead to extreme self-contentedness, where one perceives the world as a means to an end.
Spoiler: XVI - 16 - The Tower
Meaning:
The Tower Tarot card is the only card in the Major Arcana that refers to a total restructuring of one's belief system. The Tower brings disruption, instability, transformation and truth. With the Tower card, one can expect a total deconstruction of one's beliefs and thought patterns. The Tower often indicates that one’s faulty perceptions have caused the creation of an unstable foundation. The corresponding number to The Tower is sixteen. In numerology, sixteen is reduced to seven, which represents authoritative power and positive action. However, in the case of the Tower card, seven refers to a unyielding force that collides with the blinded journeyman. He has lost sight of his true path and he has no choice but to look the choices that he has made in the past. A positive element to the Tower Tarot card is freedom. The Tower card represents the ability to clear away the falsehoods that have blocked the seeker from the truth. In a Tarot reading, the Tower illuminates the parts of ourselves we do not want to see, the elements of self that we have been blind to. In the end, when we make the choice to peer into our misconceptions and discover the true reality of who we are, we can be completely freed. In a Tarot reading, the Tower represents a shedding of the old. In its place comes another level of consciousness. This heightened awareness is a result of a new form of communication with the higher mind or divine spirit. The information we once received as part of our intuitive process has little consequence against the divine messages of the universe. We are at its mercy and must learn to trust its illuminating light and wisdom. The goal is to find faith in our new sense of connection with a higher consciousness and trust its positive intent and constructive messages. When the Tower comes up in a Tarot spread, its Tarot card meanings suggest that one’s beliefs are outdated. As the mind matures, it becomes less flexible. The mind’s framework has become too set in its ways. Ultimately, new ideas and concepts become threatening to the original structure, and it gets increasingly difficult to adapt to new situations. The great vulnerability lies in the fact that reality and circumstances change. When one is faced with new ideas that challenge old constructs, there is the potential that one’s ability to organize new information ceases to function. There is a collapse of structure and one can lose his ability to cope effectively.
