    Default [M] Apotheosis OOC

Rated M for whatever I want to come up with, 'cause I don't feel like worrying about a rating system. There will be gore, there will be swearing, there will be some light sexual situations(maybe). That's about it.

    The IC Thread!

    Kepler-22b.

Such a terrible name for what was to be the hope and dreams of humanity, the future of our race amongst the stars. A planet in the perfect habitable zone, with the perfect sun, and the perfect atmosphere. Earth's twin sister. But to reach this unsoiled paradise, we would need the grandest of vessels. An Ark of biblical proportions in an age without bibles or churches. Though, there were still gods and worship of those gods. These deities were tangible, and their miracles were science. If whatever gods before these had chosen not to get it right, now it was the turn for men to create themselves in whatever image they desired. Masterpieces of flesh and plastic intertwined, sculptures of bone and metal. This was the time of beautiful and infallible science.

The Elysium, dubbed an "Edenship" as though there would be more, was this ark. How hopeful the human race is, such optimists when it came to their own glories. Plastering their mortal creations with names from dead cultures and forgotten religions in some manner of cosmically smug joke. This first and last Edenship was built with every ounce of technology from all the peoples of our humble blue planet. Pooled resources the likes of which no project in human history had seen. Geniuses of science, walking gods in their own right, poured all their creations onto this behemoth of science. Like a mosquito, it bloated larger and larger with every experimental(though, we were assured, it was completely tested and safe) new idea. So large it needed a special spacedock built orbiting Earth, a floating city of millions for the sole purpose of constructing the dreams of mankind into a spaceship. It took twenty years to complete.

    - The Galactic Standard year 2635, Elysium is completed.
    - 2638 GS, the Edenship's passengers were chosen. The greatest representatives of our time boarded their Ark. They launched, hurtling into the black curtain of space toward that one sparkling little diamond that held Kepler-22b on it's brim.

    - Two months later, all contact was lost.

    - 2645 GS, Elysium was found.

    Spoiler: The Edenship "Elysium"

When the Elysium was lost, the people of Earth continued to hope for a time that it was simply a malfunction of the communications. Interference or some other unsatisfying explanation. They continued to dream. As seven years passed by, the Elysium faded from memory while situations of Earth only deteriorated. The workers on the mighty spacedock used to construct the Edenship were eventually sent home to earth, their purpose over... but, after twenty years, could you really call it their home anymore? Instability was inevitable. Riots, overcrowding, corruption, and economic depression. The greatest project ever finished by man's hand had been a failure, and all those resources and time spent on it now took it's toll on Earth. What would have been their salvation instead helped speed them along to oblivion.

Just in the darkest of hours on Earth, seven years to the day since contact was lost, the Elysium called out. A distress beacon suddenly activated in the dead of space, halfway between Earth and their destination of Kepler-22b. It allowed mankind to begin hoping again and forgetting their worldly troubles. The politicians cried that this man-made heaven would not be lost to space forever. The pride of humanity would be rescued, repaired, or at least put to rest properly. Other optimists predicted that it was perfectly possible for the three million aboard the vessel to still be alive, waiting for rescue, and the mission for Kepler-22b could be resumed. The plan was made to form a small initial scouting party, to board the Elysium and ascertain it's condition. A crew of a handful of experts, hand-picked for the mission, to arrive before the rest of humanity's repair or salvage fleet.

    OOC INFORMATION

Alright, welcome to the mature sci-fi roleplay Apotheosis. I hope you enjoyed the in-character background, I hope it gave you a sense of just what sort of world we're trying to make here, but now it's time for me to lay out some of the specifics.

I will be running this roleplay in a purely GM sense. The Elysium will be a sandbox for you to explore, and learn the 'story' of the ship in whatever way you choose. Whenever a new area is explored, I will detail what the area looks like and try to give you points of interest. I will then respond to the actions of the characters as needed, until the group moves on from that area. Yes, the party can split up, but please throw me a bone and don't ALL go in 8 different directions. You're a team, you should try to stick together.

    Characters

First things first, lets talk about characters. Hopefully you're just raring to go whip one up, but hold yer horses partner! We got some stuff to get outta the way first.

    - Initially, you will all be playing as members of this scouting crew boarding the Elysium. You will each fulfill a general role, a specialty. Later on there will be the opportunity to create very different sorts of characters.
    - I don't care if you double up on characters, especially once we get into the real meat of the roleplay. Just make sure you can handle the extra load.
    - You will give me a writing sample with each character sheet. I don't care how long or short it is(if you have to ask for a number you're missing the point). If you think it adequately showcases your literacy, then submit it.
    - I really want you to work with me as you create your character. I enjoy answering questions you might have, and I will let you know when I think something about your character doesn't quite fit the setting. It's not a big deal, we'll hammer it out together.

    Spoiler: CHARACTER SHEET

    The Roster

    Soldier - Felix Archer (Sool777)
    Soldier -
    Scientist - Esther Mendoza(Trouble.Muffin)
    Scientist -
    Engineer - Gregor Wolfstead(DoughGuy)
    Engineer - Nicolette Wilder(CheshireKitten)
    Doctor - James Grant(Bee Bear)
    Doctor - Dane Black (Noon)
    Android - Rheeza(Lithiora)

~I will reserve spots based on a first come, first serve basis.~

I will be employing a color-coding process, that will tell specific characters information only they would know in In-Character posts. Here's a little example:

The team finds itself in a botanical garden, with green fungus crawling over the walls. The fungus looks like no natural strain you know of, a completely new breed. It makes the floor feel sticky, and it seems to be pulsing in a sickly way. The air in the room feels heavy. The giant vines from the plants have busted open the vents at the top of the room, and the big machine in the center is totally shut off. Wow, you've never seen anything like it!

In the example, only scientist characters will notice that this fungus is strange and foreign. The engineers will notice that the machinery in this room is shut off. How the characters react to that knowledge is up to them, but only they will notice these specific things.

    Technology Level

Yes, you read correctly, there is a space for one android. I'll explain the level of technology to expect in this roleplay now.

    - Synthetic limbs are common. They are all largely unobtrusive, though. Example: simply a metal arm, not a metal arm that shoots grappling hooks and laser beams. It'll be stronger, harder to break or injure, but it will also have the possibility of malfunctioning.
    - Genetic engineering is also a pretty mundane thing. You will all still be strictly human, do not go overboard with it. This just means that if your character is from a rich background, you have the option of him/her being something of a genetically engineered prodigy or Adonis. And just maybe some poor dredges of humanity irrationally hate your guts for it.
    - The Elysium is a peaceful vessel. In our setting there are no aliens yet discovered, we still believe we are alone in the universe. The only weaponry on board the ship is made for riot suppression and non-lethal crowd control. You won't find laser pistols and rocket launchers just laying around. What you may find is a gun that fires a shockwave that knocks people off their feet. Get what I'm going for here?

The player who creates the android will have to follow some very stringent guidelines, to balance out the advantages being a robot gives you. These guidelines come in the form of Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics:

1: A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

2: A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

3: A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

I will warn you if you are breaking these laws. If you continue to do it, I'll eventually be forced to destroy your character.

Last thing I want to say is this: Be excellent to each other. And, party on, dudes.

    Miscellaneous Info

(Before you read this, know that I encourage you to just make stuff up on your own. Try to have it at least make some sort of sense, but don't be afraid to have fun. This is just random stuff I've detailed in the thread so far, when asked.)

Robots, encompassing full human-like androids all the way to little thoughtless drones, are in the setting. The more complicated they are(ranging from Android on the high scale to a little cleaning drone on the low scale), the more expensive they are. The android on our boarding party(if anyone ever makes one) will be something of a marvel of futuristic technology. It would be like seeing a brand new Lamborghini driving around the street. A cleaning drone, on the other hand, would be more like seeing an old four-door family sedan.

There will be plenty of genetic science in the setting. Things like engineering astounding plants, manipulating genes, and things of that sort. As I stated in the first post, you will still all be strictly human. Stuff like experimenting with complete human-animal hybrids, and cloning full human beings, is still sort of an odd taboo in our setting. Science is directed toward improving the human form, not completely overhauling it.

Space warfare is something that hasn't really been explored in our setting either. There are no aliens that we know of yet, and therefore no reason for slapping giant railguns on your spaceships. All vessels are essentially unarmed. And while mankind has invented things like plasma-shooting guns, railgun weaponry, and other high-tech stuff... you won't find much of it on a spaceship.

The earth's government is united. It's a sort of council made up of all the planet's countries, basically, that we know today. China, America, Russia, etc etc still exist and are now supposed to be working together in this one-world new government of earth. You may all be from wildly different ethnic backgrounds, but you all work for the Earth government. You are part of the Earth navy, or Earth marines, or Earth blah blah whatever. If you're a scientist or something else non-military, you'll work for a giant corporation of some sort. Wei Fung She Pharmaceuticals. Boeing-Ford Manufacturing. Have fun with it, make stuff up, and run it by me if you aren't sure.

I'd like to encourage y'all to have fun with stuff like metal limbs, melding of man and machine in useful ways. Basically every organ can now be reproduced in some sort of metal or plastic form, and likely works more efficiently than the flesh and blood variety it replaced. The catch to this is that it can malfunction(though it'll be rare, don't worry). I figure this might give you engineers another useful job, alongside repairing engines and hacking open airlocks and whatever else. Scientists and doctors will also heavily share knowledge of these things, especially artificial internal organs. Try to steer clear of cybernetic implants and that sort of stuff, I'm not really sure I want to delve too far into that area. I'd like everything to still be quite visceral and hands-on.

This sounds awesome! I'll submit a character sheet for a scientist later today.

I actually do have a question. I'm working on an engineer and wanted to know should she have a very technical way of speaking or does there not have to be any blatant displays of her occupation, besides maybe a badge that says she is in fact an engineer by rank?

You don't have to constantly blab about conduit couplings and plasma forcefield linkages(or similar sci-fi jargon), but she should know what the hell she's talking about when she needs to.

That's something I should have addressed more... all of the characters on this crew were chosen for the job. They aren't just random guys from the soup kitchen, they're all gonna be fairly experienced. Your characters are specialists in their areas, experts on topics that fall within their domain. If that means you need more specifics on the scientific/technology side of the setting, then just let me know and we'll hash it out.

    Edit: Just thought of something...

I'll also give you hints when we are in the real roleplay, when something comes up that your character should know but you the player probably don't. I will be color-coding my IC posts once we begin, with information that only certain "specialties" would pick up on. The color of that sentence or whatever, will tell you who knows it. For instance, if we're in an armory I'll color my text green when I'm talking about how to operate the more complicated weaponry we find.

Alright I understand and in respect to the more scientific/technology side, I probably should take you up on the more details, since I sadly don't know as much about future tech as I should. I would think I would have picked up more information with how much sci-fi I actually watch, but alas, I guess not hah.

    Yeah you're reserved now.
It's very high-tech stuff, square lengths, ya know. I'd try to explain it but, well, it'd take a few hours. *puffs out chest, coughs*

It's fine, it's not like we're all theoretical physicists or something.

Well, here's what I'll do. Lets state the general sort of sci-fi confines I've got in mind for the setting...

All vessels are essentially unarmed. And while mankind has invented things like plasma-shooting guns, railgun weaponry, and other high-tech stuff... you won't find much of it on a spaceship.

Lets see, what else should we talk about... Got any other areas of concern?

Edit: Just thought of something else I should probably detail...

The earth's government is united. It's a sort of council made up of all the planet's countries, basically, that we know today. China, America, Russia, etc etc still exist and are now supposed to be working together in this one-world new government of earth. ... guess I should probably add this stuff onto the main post, huh?
