I wonder if a sting is enough to infect someone. If so, that could actually be kinda terrifying, if they're as aggressive as normal zombies.

Couple that with the fungal basis for the Resident Evil infection type and you have a really nice insect-driven zombie horror roleplay.
You could be a touch kinder on the humans by making it only a sting from specific types. Maybe only male or female, etc.
Mosquitoes could be fun and terrifying like that also, since only the females draw blood. It would start at the shorelines and places with stagnant water and spread inland like wildfire.
It's a good thing I barely sleep.
