Ohhhhh. The fact that Editha didn't seem to have met Cal before threw me off. She wasn't there to check if Cal would join them, she was there to check on a plan that was already in motion! Perhaps the marchioness was in on the plot and due to provide the assassin...and with a bit of meta-appealing to the writer's law of conservation of detail, I would guess that this assassin and our escaped Drac are one and the same. Maybe the original marchioness even sent the Drac to the torture chamber (after giving him the arcanium) because she already knew Lambert was the king's spy and would be the first one to go down when the Drac broke free?
It even sounds like the sort of plan that Editha would come up with. Give the tortured prisoner the means to get free, and just hope he kills exactly who you told him to when he does? Almost as bad as suggesting they start a civil war between Cal and the king, and hoping that both of them would go down without the violence spilling down into Greywall and without leaving the border Cal defended open. Thank fuck that the most competent threat-remover on the Council's side has been doppelganger'd by Jeon...
