Virtual reality. A dream of humanity ever since media became a popular form of entertainment. Watching a movie as though you're really there, taking control of the hero of a story... all impossible.
That is, until Nerve Gear!
A device that inhibits your brain's control over your body, so that you can actually feel like you're in the game without hurting yourself in real life. It was perfect, in theory. The beta tests were brilliant, with 1,000 lucky individuals participating. Sword Art Online became the first MMORPG to utilise the Nerve Gear, creating an expansive and beautiful world for everyone to enjoy. That is, until the creator of the game, Kayaba Akihiko, removed the ability to turn off the game. With such complicated machinery, it was also possible to make it so that if anyone tried to take you out of the game from outside, it would send a powerful electrical signal to your brain – killing you instantly.
You are a player that has been waiting for the release of Nerve Gear for a long time. Perhaps your entire life, or maybe ever since you became interested in gaming. Maybe you just wanted the experience of living in virtual reality. Whoever you are, now you're stuck in the world of Aincrad just like everyone else. You'll have to utilise every skill you have to survive, because those who die in the game die in real life.
Do you have what it takes to survive in the world of Sword Art Online?
Let's find out.
Spoiler: The Setting
Our story begins on the 30th Floor of Aincrad, eight months having passed since the launch of Sword Art Online. All of our characters are members of a guild which only accepts the strongest of the strong: Zero Auctorita. The three founders, Aias, Victoire, and Cerberus, are on a quest to lead this guild to the hundredth floor and defeat the final boss, therefore freeing all from the grasp of Akihiko Kayaba.
Spoiler: Rules
1) Abide by all RP rules, along with the Mature RP rules.
2) I am the GM, and Imperial1917 is my coGM. What we say goes, preferably without argument. This includes the accepting and denying of CSs. Treat us and others with respect, and you will receive respect in turn.
3) Please use 3rd person in IC, and put at least two literate paragraphs per IC post. Three is preferred as a minimum, but I understand that circumstances change. The more you write, the more we have to write about!
4) Don't you dare godmod. Yeah yeah, your character is all doped out with crazy gear and stuff. That doesn't mean you get to pull off every punch you throw and come back unscathed.
5) Characters can die. Characters dying help plot development. That doesn’t mean I’m gonna kill off all your characters cuz LOLGMPOWERZ, but just keep that in mind.
6) If you are going to be inactive for a week or longer, let me know in here. If we have to wait on a post from you for a long time (like, two weeks) without any notification from you, then your character will be killed off.
7) This takes place 8 months after the launch of Sword Art Online, but no canon characters or canon character relations will be permitted. Consider Kirito and Asuna basically dead. Akihiko Kayaba is the only canon character. Otherwise, canon characters are banned.
8) Along with that, Kirito/Asuna doubles will not be accepted. Neither will CSs with Dual Blades as a skill. Neither will characters who are listed as Beaters/Beta Testers/Cheaters. Think of all Beta Testers as dead.
9) Do you have a concern/idea? PM me or Imperial! We are open to any idea you may have, and if we like the idea, then we will undoubtedly work it in. Communicate with us a lot!
10) Have a good time. But not too good of a time. I don’t wanna have to clean up more player blood than absolutely necessary.
Please place “Yui is a terrible character" at the top of your CS after reading these rules.
(I mean, if you actually like Yui as a character, then just post something about Yui at the top of your CS instead. But you’re wrong. Yui sucks.)

Personality: Serious, yet approachable. John wholeheartedly believes that while the game should be taken seriously there's always time to be kind to everyone around him. Part of this mentality is why he chose to become a tank, realising that he was stuck in the game for good. While he doesn't technically condone people messing around, he won't stop them if they decide to. That said, he always declines offers of that nature.
Bio: Born in one of the capital cities of Australia, John grew up to a wealthy lifestyle with aspirations of achieving much in his life. For the most part, he succeeded. Graduating University with high grades, moving to Japan as a Foreign Consultant for a business and getting married were all a part of his overall plan. Only one thing in his life seemed off from his perfect record; his obsession with video games. He always found time to pick up a controller or a keyboard and check out the latest MMORPG or FPS. When Nerve Gear was announced, he was ecstatic.
Despite his wife's insistence to take his job a little more seriously, he brushed her concerns aside and took a sick day just to hop onto Sword Art Online on the day of release. Unsurprisingly, this turned out to be the worst decision he could have made. He doesn't regret it, however. Seeing it as an opportunity to step forward and help save the lives of people who “don't know any better”. If by standing at the front of a fight and defending everyone behind him can save lives, then he'd do it without question.
Still, it doesn't stop him from frowning at the people who refuse to take the game seriously. Shortly after the game's release, he was witness to one of the first deaths in the game – a man who jumped from Aincrad to test the theory. The image of a man falling to his death and the knowledge that he was going to die has stayed with him for the rest of his time as a player of Sword Art Online.

Personality: Cerberus is hotheaded and quick into battle. This doesn’t stop him from being friendly, but it certainly doesn’t stop him from being blunt. He can be a tad impulsive at times, sometimes proposing for the guild to charge headfirst into conflict. However, his charisma amongst the guild burns brighter than Aincrad’s sun, and despite his impulsiveness, he keeps the guild’s best interests at heart.
Bio: Cecil grew up on the east coast of America as the definition of an average kid. He went to school, did his homework, went to sports practices, rinse and repeat. When he had free time, he loved to play video games and learn about the code behind them. Although he took many coding classes in middle and high school, he learned most of his coding tricks just through playing with video games’ coding…and other programs.
Off the web, Cecil seemed normal to his school system. He was called the occasional name and bullied rarely, to which he always snapped back with something that earned him further humiliation. He earned decently high grades, and he had a small group of friends.
On the web, however, Cecil had developed an anonymous identity by the name of “Cerberus.” His programming provided websites with defenses to viruses, hackers, and even legal code. Cerberus became surprisingly well-known on the web as a guardian who chose his clients individually. Personally, Cecil saw himself as a vigilante on the internet, despite the fact that well over half of what he did was illegal. He took the name “Cerberus” as a symbol of the immense three-headed canine that guarded the Underworld, for he saw his programming as equally impenetrable.
After graduating from high school, Cecil moved to Japan with his family to pursue further education in computer science. His studies became distracted by the creation of the Nerve Gear, and he began to obsess over the potential coding of such a complicated system. Although he had no access to the Nerve Gear until it’s release, he still wondered over what could create such an impressive experience.
When the Nerve Gear was finally released, he dove headfirst into it before analyzing the code, believing that his analysis could wait until later. Little did he realize the grave mistake that he made.
Also what's our starting level and can we have a maxed skill if it isn't combat related?
Starting level will probably be between 30-45, give or take depending on how hardcore your character is. I'd also like to state that maxing a skill this early on in the game is somewhat ridiculous, so I'm going to say no to that. I originally had skill levels in my Sheet, but Doc gave me a look and told me to just ignore them - which I did. Only one of them was over 400 and the other four were barely over 300 or under it, so assume that no Skills are beyond about 500/600 at this point, and only if your character is really good at said skill.
Remember how long it took Asuna to finish maxing out cooking? Yeah. Think like that.
