The Matrix films are full of trans allegories and in either case they were both women back then even if it was before they realized it.
Did you know in the Star Wars EU there was a little trend of clones of characters not getting a new name but just getting an extra vowel? Such as clones Luuke Skywalker and Luuuke Skywalker(Though Luuuke was never canon).
