Background: Tolbert has had a rough life. He was born in a small town in the mountains of West Virginia to drug addict parents. Tolbert is the oldest of 5 kids, 3 brothers and a sister. His mother was distant, just doing the minimum to keep her kids alive. And often even that was a stretch for her. His father had a mean streak when he drank, which was most days. Tolbert, being the oldest, took the brunt of that anger. Anger that manifested itself in any number of tortures: cigarette butts, fists, belts, choking, wrenches, and even cuts from knives on special days. When not getting beaten at home, Tolbert was trying to help provide for his siblings even from a young age. He would steal what he could from who he could. This led to him being in trouble constantly and eventually expelled from school in the 8th grade. His siblings didn’t fare any better and often worse. He tried sheltering them, but he was just a boy. For Tolbert, childhood was something to be survived. He does not look on it with fond memories. He looks at it as a time where he was weak, which disgusts him.

After getting expelled, Tolbert followed the only path he saw. He began working for a local small time meth cooker as a runner. As he got older and bigger, his reputation as a mean son-of-a-bitch began to grow as well. People feared him and those that didn’t fear him respected him. He moved his way up in the local drug world until a big time dealer named Hugo in Miami was passed his name. So Tolbert went to work for Hugo as an Enforcer. If you didn’t pay, Tolbert would pay you a visit. That turned out to be pretty good motivation for the debtors. Tolbert got good at that job. He knew where, how hard, and how many times to hit someone to inflict the correct message.

Eventually this led him to working on more important tasks in addition to the average loan collections. A lot of times this included torturing information from rivals. Tolbert became very proficient with a whole new set of tools in this line of work. It was like an art form for him: he saw beauty in it. Beauty was not something that Tolbert saw in life.

Thanks to his skill, Tolbert became an important and well paid person within Hugo’s organization. Tolbert began to dress better with expensive clothes, drive nice cars, and live in fancy homes. He was practically happy, even when the work got bloody. He managed to save enough money to help his siblings out where he could: paying for school for his sister, bailing out a brother, loaning money to one for a restaurant. His luck had turned and then he got a notification that he won a nice vacation. Tolbert thought on the asshole of a father that he was named after and smiled. He didn’t even have to imagine dismembering him.

Background: Kelly grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, not much of a troublemaker, studious and friendly. He had a very close knit group of friends. Not all of them shared his aptitude for staying out of trouble. He was always there to back them up though. Even if it meant a few fist fights. He took a beating or two, and laid down his own more than once.

Growing beyond that, though, he was able to get a full ride scholarship to go to Northwestern University. He studied biochemistry, and from there was able to get his medical degree from the University of Chicago School of Medicine. He was never one for excitement though. And going up into the tall buildings of the city made him nervous. After getting through his residency at some smaller hospitals in Northwest Indiana. He missed his home city though, and took a job as a Medical Examiner in Christ Hospital just outside of Chicago. The accommodations were on the first floor, and he had great hours. It allowed him to spend a lot of time with his girlfriend, Noel, that he met during his residency. She is a maternity nurse in the hospital where they met still.

After saving up for over a year, he finally built up the courage to buy a ring and propose. He even fought with his own fears and proposed to her at one of her favorite rooftop restaurants in the city, that she really only went to with her friends, as Kelly couldn't normally stand to be there for a whole meal. He may have been too nervous or the ring wasn't right or he just wasn't the one meant to make her happy the rest of her life. She rejected his proposal and it left him spinning and falling further than he could have ever expected. He needed an escort out of the restaurant after he became so nervous, he ended up laying on the ground. He broke the nose of one escorts, in a panic, and faced some fines because of this, but nothing more became of it.

After recently having his heart broken by the girl of his dreams, rejected when he asked her to marry him, he was a little less than enthusiastic to go on a tropical vacation all by himself. His friends encouraged him though. “It will help you forget all about her!,” they would say. “Just think about the possibilities. Everyone there is going to be wearing almost nothing,” nudging him. Eventually he gave in.
