Salvador did not apologise as he had not said anything wrong. Melia was just being to sensative, something caused by him as he had been spoiling her to much ever since she had arrived at the castle. She needed to be tougher, he needed to make her less weak. He looked back and saw the warning lights, it had been discovered that Salvador was missing.. or gone. They would go look for them now, but in the cover of darkness they knew they would find hardly any tracks. "Best make sure they don't find us" He said as he let go of the reins of his horse. He conjured a little spell, making the tracks of the horses dissapear that were right behind them. THey would make new ones, but they had to be discovered first.

As he was done he looked proudly at his work before taking the reins back in his hands. They would ride in silence now until morning. Riding their horses fast without tiring them out. Vermin ran beside them, his tongue hanging out as he seemed to enjoy himself with every step he made. To be out of the castle, to run, to feel more freedom than he had felt in such a long time made him smile...

The spell was only small but it would be enough to track them. The closer they got to the North, the mere sniff of magic would be obvious for miles around. She rolled her eyes as he seemed rather smug with his work. Melia kept an eye on Vermin who was happily trotting between them. She decided that in the next hour, she would offer to have him rest on the back of the horse. She could have him lay over the back and rest a little. She knew that Salvador wouldn't help the dog so she would do it instead. The darkness continued to burn at her skin, the only light (excluding the moon) being the lights in the distance behind them.

The faint noises of horns and cries would barely reach them but still Melia could imagine them. She could imagine how the castle gates would be torn down. How their king abandoned them in their time of need. How she left behind Sammy and Samuel. How Samuel would wonder where she had got to. Would he worry that she had been captured...or that she had been kidnapped? She steadily let silence drape over them as her questions burned in her skull. She was too busy thinking of that behind them to be worried about what lay before them.

"They know I am gone." Salvador said silently as he looked over his shoulder. He saw the faint lights. He knew which were light as he knew them all. He fel silent after that as he spurred his horse to go faster. He knew he was to be hunted now, that he had a price on his head. He looked at Melia for a second before he made his horse gallop. "We need to be in the woods before the sun is up. Just ... keep your ass in the saddle and keep your mouth shut." He snapped at her before his horse went as fast as he could.

Melia trailed behind for a moment, her gaze fixated on the faint lights. It looked like they were firing stars into the sky. The colours were beautiful, the lights were enough to illuminate the castle in the distance. She could hear the horse before her picking up his pace. She turned her head back to Salvador and for a brief moment show a flash of fear register on his features. It shocked her. She had never truly seen fear on his face before, other than when he realised that she held part of his wife. But this was a different fear, this was not his past catching up with him. This was his death. His painful slow death and his land, his people would crumble. She kept quiet, even biting her tongue to stop herself from snapping back at him. Melia copied him, forcing her horse to pick up his pace. The woods looked far off in the distance but at least the moon was still high.

Hardly a word was spoken when they rode for the forest. Every now and then Salvador let Melia know that she needed to keep riding, or that they were nearly there. As they finally reached the forest he stopped his horse. There was a reason for it, for this forest was haunted... or so they were to believe. Nardly a soul ever ventured into them, and even less souls lived to tell the tale. THis was the reason for Salvador to travel straight through them, venture into the woods that many a man and woman feared. He looked back at Melia and let out a small sigh "Best keep close and quiet. With a little bit of luck we get through these woods unharmed. Whatever happens, whatever you see.... dont fucking scream or run... alright? I'll keep us save" he told her before he let his horse move into the woods.

The light from the moon was not strong enough to reach the forest floor. As soon as they gotten into the woods it was pitch black darkness all around them. The horses were brave animals and kept walking, even though both Salvador and Melia could sense that they were afraid as well. Salvador calmed his horse as he let out soft gentle sounds. His hand ran through the animals mane as he himself tried not to get to spooked as well.

Whatever happens....whatever you see. Her stomach dropped and fear started to flood through her veins. No stories of this forest had drifted to her small village...but if Salvador was scared about it. She nodded once, not even commenting on the way he warned her. When they passed the first line of trees, all light left them. Melia never realised just how much she adored the moon until that moment. Until not a single shred of her light reached them. Her grip tightened on the reins and she could feel the animal beneath her tense at the darkness. She stayed quiet, only her scratchy breaths interrupted the silence.

She could have expected the small noises of life in this forest but it was quiet. It was as if their presence had been acknowledged...and they were being watched. She couldn't see Salvador but the soft shuffle of his horse told her that he was still near. Melia slowly lowered herself towards her saddle, feeling slightly safer being closer to her horse. Maybe this forest will be a small one. Maybe this feeling of dread in her stomach would pass quickly. She hoped with all her heart that the moon would grace them again and that they would not be surrounded by darkness forever more.

They rode in absolute silence for the remainder of the night. Salvador did not speak one word towards Melia, the only calming sounds he made were for his horse that he rode. As daylight broke the forest slowly filled with some light. The forest was old, and as far as Melia knew the oldest forest that existed. The tree brances seemed like the fingers of the very demons that haunted these woods. Salvador looked over his shoulder, almost as if he was to make sure that Melia was still there. He was clearly visible in the dim lightning, clear enough to see that he was growing tired. "We made it through the night, we will keep riding until nightfall. Then the horses be needing rest... as do we" He said with a soft voice, as he did not want to disturb any of the creatures that lived in these woods.

A the road was wider he stopped his horse for a few seconds, long enough so he could ride next to Melia. He brushed his hand through his hair before he looked at here. "THey will not dare ride into these woods. We are forcing them to ride around it. GIving us a few days ahead on them. If we are lucky we be meeting a very old friend of mine, he lives in thes woods. A... very strange man, but as kind as the birds he lives with. THey only reason we can enter these woods without being attacked is my friendship with him. It not meaning that we are safe, many of his kind do not agree with his friendship with a human, or a mage for that matter. THey have a long and terrible history with men, and have secluded themselves to these woods ever since" He explained to her in the same soft voice, making him sound kind.. making him almost sound like the man he used to be.

She hated that night. More than any other night, even the first night that she had spent inside the castle. Sunlight started to trickle between the leaves and relief echoed deeply through her body. His voice brushed against her and she let her gaze drift over him. He was tired. His body was nearly folding over on his horse. Would he last until nightfall? But she didn't wish to question him when he spoke so quietly. The man never spoke softly...so there must be a reason for it. As they continued to plod forward, she could not stop herself from taking in their surroundings. The trees looked like they had erupted from hell itself. The darkness still hung in amongst them and she could feel it bite at her horses heels. Like a wild animal that was tracking them.

His voice was closer and she turned to see him riding alongside her. She didn't ask the question that was burning on the tip of her tongue. If they did not wish to ride through here....why are they? Why would they dare risk it?? Attacked by who. Fear echoed in her eyes as his words (Which were meant to bring comfort) only terrified her. She nodded softly and let a small smile brush onto her lips. "Is....Is that who is watching us?" Her voice was small and barely a whisper. "The animals. I can feel something watching us." It crept up her neck and made her scared to turn around.

"Yes" was his simple and blunt answer to the question that Melia asked. "We are being watched, every single bug, every single tree... they have been watching us and judging our presents ever since we set foot in this forest. It is full of creatures of old, creatures older than time, creatures that have lived long before we as humans were even to exist." Was what he said next as he felt that he needed to be more fortcomming with information. She needed to know wat could happen, that something might attack or stop them in their way through the forest.

"You must have heard those stories. Some hunter or farmer stating that they saw the biggest stag, wolf, hog. Fishermen that tell you they saw a fish bigger than any they saw before, or women telling how the saw the prettiest most perfect butterfly ever seen by any human eyes before. Horses so perfect any king would wish for it, deer so beautiful that no hunter could truly bring himself to kill it. Most of the time those are stories told by drunks or liars. But every so often they truly seen the most beautiful of creaturs in existens. They are the wardens. Every single animal in existance has one. The first and last of their kin. Wardens of any kind of deer, any kind of pig or hog, any kind of bug, spider, butterfly, bird. Creatures that are the perfect example of their kin, stronger, faster, bigger. They are those who protect their kin. You kill to much of their kin? you will find yourself killed by their warden. You try and drown a litter of puppies.. best be hoping no warden sees it."

He gestured Melia to follow him as they neared a fork in the road, he let the horse decide which way to go and as they were back on track Salvador looked back at Melia. "In the great wars some mages have found that there is a way to control the wardens with the darkest of magic. Magic even I would think twice before using it. Can you imagine an army of bears? Elephants, Rhino's? A sky turning black as birds attack from above? ... The wardens have been in hiding ever since, staying away from magic users like me. And when one dares to show itself they will not hassitate to take him or her out."

He could see her growing nervous. Had they gone into a wood full of creatures of great power... wile being a mage that they hated??. "Unless you have befriended one like me, one would be a fool to wonder into these woods. We are to find the warden of the carrier pigeon. For us he calls himself Phillip, and will show himself as an fragile old man. Wardens used to do that.... as their natural form is nor human, nor the animal they represent. Showing themself as humans will make us feel more at ease..... " He heard some birds calling and looked up, looking nervous as he did so. "Lets hope that Phillip still lives here.... Because I really do not wish to explain myself towards other Wardens withouth him there"

One word and her lips were clamped shut. She hadn't expected that response. She would have even preferred it if he had lied, told her to be quiet and not ask stupid questions. The answer made the hairs on her neck stand up, the feeling of a cool breeze flooded through her body and she kept her eyes on Salvador. Refusing to look away in fear of latching eyes with something watching them. Melia had indeed heard the stories. The ramblings of a drunken fisherman that swore the largest cod had torn through his nets or a hunter who refused to enter the forest after a stag had him pined to a tree before snuffing and dropping him to the mud. Wardens. The word meant nothing to her, maybe in her past life she had read it somewhere but Melia had never heard it. If she didn't know better she would have called him a liar, a silly old man. But she had seen what he was capable of. What she was capable of. She knew that this world was no longer plain and boring.

He raised his hand and becokened her to follow him. With a gentle push, she asked her horse to get closer to him. Of course the mages would think to control a magical creature. She had never heard of Elephants...or Rhinos...but the image of a dark sky caused by squawking ravens made her pull her arms close into her body. His next statement made her pause. Her confusion conquered her fear. "Phillip" She blinked rapidly. "We are going to see a man just wandering around this forest...but he's actually a pigeon...not really a pigeon though. He's like the grand carrier pigeon." She asked sounding like a child. Seeing him nervous brought the feeling of fear swiftly back to her stomach. It swirled in her stomach and she felt sick as birds above scattered from the branches, letting the smallest glimmer of the sky peep in.

Every crack in the distance had her heart skipping a beat. It felt like there was a target on her back. They were not in their comfort zone. They were weak in this forest. The creatures around them had the upper hand and they all knew it. She just had to hope that this Phillip would appear swiftly. Cold hands held tight onto her reins and Melia tried to make herself as small as possible in her new form.
