A rational part of Lyonel told him that the bandits were aware of his presence as he proceeded further into the mine, but another part of them said that if they were planning an ambush, they were welcome to try, and that the two of them could handle whatever it was these ragged lowlifes had to throw at them. He proceeded deeper into the cavern, and sure enough, in a certain cavern deeper inside, the rats decided to show themselves and surround the two of them, brandishing mostly cheap weapons, with an occasional sword among them.

"Now this is more like it," the knight remarked, conjuring forth a cinquedea in his offhand in order to defend himself from the attackers, eager to engage any that came close enough for him to strike. Three of them did at once, though he sidestepped away from two of them and buried his sword in the chest of the third, before ducking a strike and sweeping out the legs of another, severing one of them in the process before bringing his offhand down and piercing deep into the thug's throat.

He was aware of the hedge-mage before the spell was cast, but there was little he could do to prevent it from hitting them. He heard Kyu crying out as well, and Lyonell said, "Take care of him," allowing the scribe to throw his weapon at the mage and terminate the spell with the swift stroke. He was ready to cast a Dispel Magic spell if it didn't work, as it was one of those "don't leave home without it" type spells, though it ultimately proved unnecessary as the dazing spell was terminated along with the hedge-mage's life.

However, the fact that Kyu was now defenseless meant that Lyonell had to protect him. He removed the arm of a lanceman and kicked the severed arm with the weapon in it over to the scribe to give him something to protect himself with, while moving closer to him and incanting, "Tairais, birk vhira, jiil sthyri." The spell was a dual haste spell, which would slow the perception of time for both of them in order to move faster than their enemies, outmaneuver them, and strike them with lethal precision.

With the mage taken care of, Kyu knew he had to get out of the heat of the battle. Lyonell had tossed him one of the bandits' cheap lance, which would serve as his only protection. A throwing weapon, Kyu wondered how effective it would be in his hands. He held it firmly and watched as the other fighters seemed to slow down with Lyonell's counter spell. Using his lance, he made quick work of those that had attacked him before. As he moved, he could feel all sorts of new wounds. Red soaked his clothes, but he was not ready to stop yet.

An incredible amount of fiends filled the room. Kyu wondered if they were truly stupid enough to send their entire guild at once. He had been surprised they had a mage, but with him gone, it was a simple battle royale. He defended himself as best as he could, taking care not to let his lance get severed by the axemen that targeted him. Knowing their fight was a losing one, many of the brigands seemed to target Kyu rather than the harder to kill Lyonell. With combat so close, Kyu had no trouble seeing his foes, and thus striking them critically each time.

Minutes passed, and the crowd was dying down. Kyu was growing tired, but he remained fighting, thankful for his stamina training at the Academy. He abandoned his lance for a sword, and used that more effectively to eliminate the crowd. As their numbers dwindled, the remaining foes began fleeing deeper into the cave. Kyu retrieved his own sword and started after them, knowing Lyonell would do the same. At least now they would have far less to deal with as they traversed the dungeon, and Kyu had to admit, he was curious about the stolen treasures that must have been hidden further in.

Lyonell frowned at the sheer number of bandits that were assaulting him and his scribe. He had expected to be outnumbered, certainly, but he hadn't expected the sheer number of bandits that had taken up this mine as their residence. He typically didn't consider such low lives to be worthy of facing his full power, but considering how many there were, he didn't have much of a choice.

Being faster than the enemies was on thing, but the short range of his weapons meant that he could only strike at bandits that came close. Such would need to be rectified. "Bekir nar, ixen," he incanted, causing his strikes to send forth blades of fire with each swing, lighting up the chamber and extending outward to hit the bandits out of his reach even as he struck down those that came close.

"I'm out of here!" he heard one bandit shout as he ran towards the exit, only to be incinerated by a wall of fire that Lyonell erected with an incantation of "Atonus dos, ixen." Since they could no longer retreat through the exit, the bandits instead began to flee deeper into the mine, several of them being severed by burning blades of fire that cut through them from behind as Lyonell's enchanted blades struck at them.

Noting the blood gathered around Kyu, the knight walked up closer to the scribe and incanted, "Irisv ezoukeic, vern." While his healing magic wasn't the best, the scribes wounds didn't seem serious enough to require a dedicated healing specialist, so hopefully this spell would put him back in a good fighting condition. "We've got them on the run," he said to the scribe. "We really need to get you some armor, though. Or a ring enchanted with the force armor spell. Speaking of force armor... Litrix di hewa." The spell caused force energy to coalesce into an armor similar to scale armor around the scribe. This particular spell was preferred among many mages who lacked the ability to cast effectively while in heavy armor, and while Lyonell had the proper training and specialization to cast while wearing armor... the spell would at least prove useful for the scribe whose status prevented him from wearing much armor himself.

"Let's try to wrap this up," the knight remarked. "I don't want to run out of magic energy without a hot elf girl nearby for spirit melding..." Hopefully no more magic would be required to finish off this band of brigands, but a more cautious pursuit seemed prudent now that the knight had seen how many of them there truly were.

The battle was done--for the time being. Kyu nodded towards Lyonell as a thanks for the armor, though he admittedly didn't like wearing any. Already at every disadvantage because of his senses, the scribe preferred to be lithe, though in such confined quarters, he knew the armor would help him now. He stretched his shoulders and admired the comfortable fit. "I doubt they will be bothering us much now," he admitted. "Let us go."

The pair continued into the underground hideaway. The brigands must have been in a hurry to meet them where they had, for hanging torches and decorations lay scattered on the floors of the halls. Kyu picked up a particular decoration, a brooch of gold and emerald. "I wonder what noble is missing this," he murmured to himself. "I'm surprised they hadn't sold it. Such an expensive piece does not belong here." He put it back on the wall, figuring thye would return for it later.

Finally, they reached a large, dark room with several treasures cast in it. A scuffed table sat in the center, its many scrolls and maps thrown atop it. Kyu approached, wary, and looked over the papers. They were plans, various escape routes and notes on nearby wealthy people. The weapons left here were old, though when they first were stolen must have gleamed. Kyu listened, but he heard no one around. "Surely they haven't all perished?" he asked. He picked up one of the pieces of paper and scanned it. "It looks like they were planning on looting a castle next. It might be beneficial to alert the king and queen. Though..." He looked around, at the vacant, poorly lit room. "I doubt their plans will go accordingly now." He looked to Lyonell. "I think you were successful, sire. If any bandits remain, they should be remaining underground for a while yet."

Judging by the reaction of the scribe the mage armor spell, it didn't seem like he was all that familiar with the spell. It was specifically designed to be used by wizards who lacked sufficient training in how to properly use magic and cast spells in it, so it was composed entirely of weightless force energy rather than solid metal like his own armor, and therefore completely encumbering. Lyonell realized that it was a low level spell that he had learned prior to attending the university with Kyu, so it wasn't much of a surprise that the scribe wouldn't remember it so well.

Locating the ill-gotten treasure of the bandits, the knight frowned somewhat as he examined it. "They've been active in this mine for quite some time, by the looks of things." Noting the brooch that the scribe had discovered, he shook his hand as Kyu put it back on the wall. "Keep it," he said to it. "I can tell by looking at it that it has some magical properties... and the original owner is more than likely dead, or at least someone we're unlikely to find. Matter of fact, we can use all of this treasure to finance our journey... so let's go ahead and collect as much as we can carry."

Glancing around the room a bit, he incanted a low level detect magic spell. "Ickrak'ey arcaniss," he murmured in Draconic, causing a few of the weapons and other items in the room to glow a dull blue color to indicate the presence of magic. "Everything that glows, we take. It's worth more than the non-glowing stuff, typically." He looked over the list of escape routes, glancing further into the chamber. "There's no point trying to hunt them all down like rats. Let's just light a fire and collapse all their escape routes, burning up their air supply and suffocating them. That map shows all their secondary escape routes, so we shouldn't have a problem locating them and caving them in."

The old scribe immediately grew uneasy at his knight's suggestion to keep their newfound wares. "Sire," Kyu mumbled, "stealing all these things from their original thieves and pocketing them makes us no better than the brigands themselves." He didn't want the trinkets; Kyu had spent most of his life surrounded by Lyonell's family's wealth, and as a kid he had debated taking some heirlooms for himself and skipping town. But he recognized that now as just a child's fantasy, and he knew the money he'd get from pawning such items would not hold a candle to the hospitality the noble family had shown him in taking him in. Now, he looking around at these treasures and felt similarly. The gold they would fetch would be dirty money.

But Kyu knew he had little say in these matters. If Lyonell truly wanted to take what he could, Kyu couldn't stop him. He sighed lightly and picked up the map again. He memorized the escape routes and again gave his opinion. "Would it not be more beneficial to have the authorities of a nearby town handle the situation from here? If there are any thieves left, they are few and the authorities will be able to handle them. They can also take the stolen goods and find their rightful owners. These caves are old and yet still in good condition. I would hate to ruin these hidden passages so carelessly." He pocketed the map. "However, I will do as you wish and follow your lead."

His knight's bloodlust seemed unwarranted. Kyu knew to keep his opinions about Lyonell directly to himself, but he couldn't help but wonder why the man was so eager to deal pain to all of these thieves. They were in the wrong, and the law would find them, but what Lyonell was suggesting... A suffocated death under the collapse of a place many had probably considered home... He tried not to think about it. The Academy had tried to desensitize him, but Kyu still wondered if violence was an answer as often as Lyonell thought.

Listening as the scribe argued that stealing from thieves and murderers put them on the same level as the brigands, Lyonell immediately shook his head, not wanting to associate himself with that rabble or even think of himself as being a lowly criminal such as them. "While it's true that the brigands obtained this treasure through murder and bloodshed... letting such ideals get in the way of reason won't do anyone any good. If it helps you feel better, we can donate a portion of the treasure to the widows and orphans fund... since the original owners are more than likely dead, they probably left some widows and orphans who might starve to death without charity donations."

Listening as the scribe spoke of alerting the local authorities to the situation, the knight chuckled once again at the idealism of his friend. "If the local authorities were competent, they'd have dealt with this den of thieves long ago. It took us what, a half hour of asking around to learn the exact location of this bandit lair? It's because the local lord's army is weak and incompetent that this nest was allowed to expand the way it has... and besides, the mine was abandoned not because of the poor condition of the caves, but because it ran out of ore. An empty cave network can only serve as a nest for rats, when its economic value has already been exhausted. Best to crush the rats under several tons of rock."

He knew that Kyu's heart was often bigger than his head, and the fact that the scribe could act as a sort of conscience to guide his own sword arm was one of the reasons why Lyonell felt it necessary to keep him around... but there still came situations in which it was best to cut away the cancer of society to avoid letting it spread and cause more harm. Violence was meant to be a last resort in negotiations, but since it was the only language these murderers understood... it was necessary in this situation. "Let's get to work," he said simply to the scribe.

Kyu sighed. He didn't know how to explain to Lyonell that donating "a portion of the treasure to the widows and orphans" didn't make matters much better. He supposed giving even a bit was better than nothing, but he hated the idea of Sir Lyonell, who had been not rich but well off his whole life, would think to need any of these trinkets. Kyu had spent the first several years of his life orphaned, homeless, and penniless. If anyone, he needed dirty money, and it bothered him to no end that people who certainly didn't would bother with it. But he knew his argument, like most of his arguments, would get nowhere, so he gave it up.

Though the scribe hated listening to his knight complain about local authorities. "Not everyone was fortunate enough to be sent to an academy," he breathed, nearly silent. "The brigands outnumbered the king's men of the local towns. Of course they were not going to venture into a cave of which they did not even know the layout. We had the advantage of many years of academy training and magic even. Regardless of why the authorities did not act, I strongly advise against destroying this mine, sire. The health risks are too great for just one man's content at knowing he killed some dejected souls. For example, the ground above us may never be the same. Do you wish to permanently alter the very land's layout? Debris will fly from this explosion to nearby towns, including their water supplies. Are you willing to poison innocent people for your bloodlust, sire? Deny them safe water to drink? And what happens when the livestock are poisoned? What will the people eat? Sir Lyonell it is not logical to do as you propose. You will endanger countless lives, and that's not to even suggest the personal repercussions. When the townsfolk look to the source of their plagues and their famines, they will chalk it all up to the work of the son of Sir Silas. Do you think your father would be so delighted to receive the bill of his son's mindless destruction?" Kyu sighed, and he realized he was shaking ever so slightly. To talk out like this was new and uncomfortable. "Allow me to think ahead for you, sire," he said more softly. "Leave this as is. Allow me to alert the nearby authorities, and let us be on our way."

Kyu looked away and focused on his breathing for a few moments. He busied himself with picking up a stolen sword and examining it, trying to ascertain its worth. There had been countless arguments between them over the years, but Kyu always backed down so quickly. He shook his head and headed towards the nearest exit. "Shall I be on my way, then?"

Listening to the way the scribe attempted to explain things, Lyonel's initial thoughts were that his assumptions were rather... far-fetched, to say the least. For a bit of localized evocation magic to have lasting effects on the surrounding countryside didn't seem all that likely, and as for the local lord... he figured there was a rather high chance that he was either in league with the bandits, or didn't particularly care one way or other, as there should have at least been a bounty on their heads if it wasn't within the local lord's power to deal with them.

Rather than speaking his doubts out loud to the scribe, however, he decided to think for a moment. Though he was often prone to using the first solution that came to mind, Lyonell was in fact highly intelligent, as proven by his ability to make it through University training in a rather impressively short time, as an Arcane Knight, no less. It didn't take long for a solution to come to mind once he put some thought into it. "Remember what Professor Hartman used to say?" he reminded the scribe of something one of the schools Transmutation professors used to say. "There is no problem that cannot be solved in at least a dozen different ways through the proper application of magic. If evocation magic is too messy... we can just use Transmutation."

Waving for the scribe to follow him, he began to make his way out of the mine. "If we leave this mine as it is, then it runs the risk of becoming infested with the next subterranean pest to discover it... be it goblins, kobolds, or more bandits. If we blow it up, it can make a mess. But if we wall it up through simple application of the Wall of Earth spell at the exit points... we can in fact seal it from being infested, while preserving everything inside in case they decide to open the mine for business again in the future. They'd merely need to dig through the wall of earth, rather than digging through countless tons of rubble."

Working his way back through the tunnels, it didn't take long for Lyonell to once again be outside in the daylight in front of the mine's main entrance. Waiting for the scribe to come out with him, he directed his attention back to the entrance to the mine, activating his Transmutation circuit and incanting, "Atonus dos, edar." In response to his spell, the ground shifted as a wall of thick dirt rose to cover and seal up the entrance to the mine. "No farms were harmed in the creation of this wall," he said somewhat jokingly. "Now let's seal up the escape route."
