Default [M] The Dragon, the Princess, and the Knight (Holey & lobo)

In the 52nd year since the establishment of the Empire, war had spread across the continent of Empyrean, as well as neighboring continents in all of the known world. The aggressors consisted of chromatic dragons, deities, and any who could be convinced to follow them, either wittingly or unwittingly.

During this period, a clan of silver dragons sough allies in hopes to avoid annihilation... after all, they were vastly outnumbered by rival red dragon clans, who claimed the same terrain as their habitat in which they made their lairs. As the most advanced civilization of mortals on the continent, the Empire was the most logical choice... and thankfully, the Empire was keen on supporting and preserving the silver dragons while slaying the reds.

The king of a certain clan of silver dragons and the Emperor agreed to an arranged marriage in order to cement the alliance. However, what was more important in this time was that the husband of the dragon princess was a skilled warrior and trained dragonslayer, rather than a high ranking nobleman who possessed no such talents.

And so, the Arcane Knight known as Gregor was selected for this arrangement. The day of the wedding had come, and Gregor awoke to the conclusion of the festivities. A good number of the guests were dragons, of course, but for the purpose of the ceremony, they had assumed human form, as their true forms were far too massive to be convenient. He had never met or even seen his bride to be, but from what he knew of silver dragons... she would undoubtedly be a stunning beauty, both in her human and in her dragon forms.

Amelia had known her fate since childhood, noticing even as a young princess that she would be marrying a mortal human. The time with which she would marry this man was unknown to her until just recently, but she had at least had been somewhat prepared. With war raging, and many of her dearest friends and family dying from the hands of the reds, both she and her father knew they could put it off no longer.

Was she completely satisfied with the arrangement of her marriage? Not necessarily. She had little glimmers of hope now and again that she would instead find a suitable dragon man that her father would accept as her husband. She had known the chances were slim, but it still stung when that hope was crushed with the realization that it would never be. Her fate was with a human Knight. Her father promised no one but the best, but even that wasn't enough to settle the dread she had begun to feel.

Amelia had only been given the name of her soon to be husband, which was either for her own good, or for the good of the man. Her father wanted it to be a surprise, but whether or not it was one didn't matter to the princess. Whether she had seen this Knight or not, wouldn't change the outcome. All she could do was accept, and hope that this man was worthy of being wed to a princess as she.

The day had finally arrived, and that dread was sitting heavy in Amelia's stomach. She knew she must do this for the safety of her clan, and truly an arranged marriage was not as bad as she was making it out to be. The ceremony itself was beautiful, and despite knowing this was a forced marriage, the princess couldn't help but marvel at the beauty. She knew she was beautiful, she ought to be, but it seemed as though she was even more so now. A sort of excitement had finally started to build, and she was...looking forward to meeting this husband to be.

The aisle looked much longer than the princess had imagined, but standing at the far end was the Knight with which she would soon be wed. He seemed handsome, from what she could tell, but looks didn't determine the outcome of a marriage. She progressed down the aisle with her head held high, feeling the eyes of both the Empire's people, along with her own. Her steps didn't falter, and her light blue gaze never once drifted away from the Knight she would soon be calling husband. "Amelia," she introduced once she reached the man, her head tilting down just a bit in a show of respect. If she was kind to the man, he must at least show the same kindness in return. At least, that was her hope.

    Spoiler: Amelia

Gregor wasn't an expert on wedding ceremonies, but as far as he could tell, it was mostly reminiscent of any other noble wedding. He had seen a couple before, but this particular perspective was... certainly unique. Some of the rituals were altered somewhat... as the person administering the wedding was a tall, blonde-haired man with a more powerful magical aura than the rest of them.

It was one thing a knight had to learn to deal with when dealing with dragons... no matter what shape they took, they all radiated a powerful compulsive aura. This aura was enough to provoke shock and awe in mortals, instilling fear in the hearts of their enemies, and took specialized mental training and conditioning for a dragon slayer such as himself to resist.

Soon the bride... princess of the silver dragon clan whose name escaped him... began to approach down the aisle. She certainly didn't disappoint... both her physical appearance and her own dragon aura were enough to make her appear to be far more beautiful than any human woman he had ever met. No doubt her wedding dress had been designed to enhance both, as her youth made her weaker than many of the other dragon guests, yet her aura seemed to be more powerful at the moment... or at least so powerful that Gregor couldn't take his eyes off of her.

He also noted how her own gaze never drifted away from him. He couldn't sense any emotion from her... and he sort of expected that she wouldn't immediately be happy with him anyway, as her kind did, after all, see humans as inferior, which they were. Even a female such as this princess, who had likely only recently reached marriage age, was probably older than most humans whose lifespan hadn't been extended through magical means.

He blinked for a moment, realizing she had just said her name. "I'm Gregor..." he found himself replying without even realizing it, as if her aura compelled him to speak up as well. Well, this was certainly a good way to familiarize himself with the effects of such an aura. He heard the gold dragon priest giving some sort of speech regarding the bonds of love and devotion, though it was hard for Gregor himself to focus on this as he still couldn't take his gaze off of the beautiful princess.

"Princess Amelia," he heard the blonde man say eventually, "Do you swear to love, honor, and obey this knight, for the remainder of your eternal life?"

The automatic response the man had when giving his name was almost enough to make the princess smile, but instead she focused her attention on the priest. She was flattered that her soon to be husband seemed to appreciate her looks, but a part of her remembered that it was only due to what she was. She could make any mortal man swoon with just the bat of her lashes, but that wasn't necessarily something she felt she should take pride in. It was her duty as princess to be strong, despite her young age, and not to be attracting the human men each time she passed. But, it seemed as though it was a good thing in this case. Better for the man she was marrying to enjoy her aura, rather than be repulsed by what she was and what she looked like.

Her thoughts were quickly brushed off when she heard the priest speak her name, and her eyes went from the golden dragon to the man across from her. She remembered what she had been told about human weddings, and slowly nodded her head. "I do," she murmured, letting her gaze once again meet that of the Knights across from her. There was no turning back now. And maybe, deep down inside, she was alright with that.

Once the priest made it through and had the Knight say his vows as well, the princess took a shy step closer to the man in front of her. From what she had been explained, a kiss was the human thing to seal the deal when being married. This whole celebration was so foreign to her, as the dragons had a tendency to do marriages quite differently. That is, if they were to occur at all. The princess just hoped she had done as she needed, without overstepping a boarder, or missing a line that had to be said.

The knight was somewhat impressed by how readily the princess went ahead and agreed to her vows. Well, he figured she knew what she was getting in to, and had spent a great deal of time contemplated the necessity of the arrangement. He had no idea how to regard the way she continued to look at him, though... it was difficult to believe that she would find him all that attractive compared to a dragon, after all.

As the priest turned his attention towards Gregor himself, he asked, "Do you, Sir Gregor, swear to love, honor, and protect this lady, for the remainder of her eternal life?" To a human, this was somewhat of a ridiculous question. After all, human life spans measured in decades, while the great wyrms were over a thousand years old. It was an impossible promise, and yet...

"I do," said the knight with a nod, pledging to do the impossible as if it were nothing.

For an ordinary wedding, this would be the time to seal their oaths with a kiss. And yet... something unusual happened. An acolyte approached with a cushion, upon which rested an amulet bearing the likeness of a silver dragon. "In past ages," the priest began, "In the most dire of circumstances... our father Bahamut has provided us with a means of augmenting our numbers, by enlisting mortals into our own ranks. His gift to them came in the form of an amulet, powered by the soul of a True Dragon, which allowed mortals to assume our form, and take on some of our characteristics."

Handing the cushion over to the princess, the priest said, "To seal your marriage, you are to hang this amulet around the neck of your husband, and imbue it with the power of your soul through Spirit Melding. This is a gift from Bahamut's Champion, to allow the two of you to fulfill your oaths as husband and wife. Now hang it around the neck of your husband, and seal your vow with a kiss, your Highness."

Amelia had been expecting a kiss, and the last thing she thought would come was someone approaching the two of them. Her blue gaze was quick to turn to the male, and her eyes rested on the beautiful amulet that was resting on the safety of the cushion. Confusion was quick to settle over the princess, and she focused her attention on the priest as he began to explain the slight twist in their wedding. As things began to piece together and make a bit more sense, Amelia looked in front of her to the man that had just vowed to love her for eternity. The man that she had never met until this point...And the man that she would potentially be with forever.

An odd surge of guilt started to build up inside of her, and yet Amelia still took the amulet off the cushion as gently as she could manage. She lightly brushed her fingers over the metal, taking in the beauty of it. After a moments hesitation, she carefully held up the amulet and reached out to place it around Gregor's neck. "I hope you know what you're getting yourself into," the princess whispered, only just loud enough for the Knight beside her to hear.

Amelia carefully held onto the amulet until he was fully placed around the man's neck, slowly releasing it so that it rested against his skin. She let her gaze linger on it for a couple moments, before she blinked up to meet Gregor's gaze once more. She then did as she had expected moments before, closing the short distance between them to press a kiss to the Knight's lips. The vow was sealed, and Amelia knew that she would now be spending her eternity with the man she only knew the name of.

The knight wasn't sure what the princess was thinking. Justing by her reactions, it seemed this twist was not what she expected. Was she hoping that she'd be rid of him in a few decades so that she could move on to other things? Or was it... something else? She seemed to look at the amulet as if it were incredibly valuable, though dragons did seem to appreciate treasure quite a bit.

As she placed it around his neck, he heard her whisper. A warning of some kind? "Likewise..." he managed to reply to him, continuing to gaze at her flawless face. He tried not to show an reaction as she closed the distance, and soon felt her soft lips pressed against his. Returning the kiss, he slid a ring onto her finger... the human portion of this ceremony involved a piece of jewelry to mark her as his wife, after all. This particular jewel was funded by the Empire and designed to appear beautiful even to a high class dragon such as Amelia, though it also contained some sort of magical enchantment. Once the ring was on the finger, it fell upon the priest to conclude the ceremony.

"By the power granted to me by our father Bahamut and by his Champion, who the mortals know as Emperor Friedrich I, I hereby declare this ceremony complete. You are now united as mates, husband and wife, from now until the end of your eternity."

Gregor realized that most of the dragon's words were ceremonial... while it was true that dragons didn't suffer the ill effects of old age the way mortals did, they most certainly could be killed. After all, he himself was trained in how to accomplish just such a feat. The princess seemed to have warned him about living forever... but in all honesty, he wasn't too comfortable in his chances of surviving the next several years, with the odds so heavily stacked against them.

Not letting his thoughts be known, he simply held on to the princess' hand and gave her a nod, urging her to walk out of the chapel with him to the cheers of dragon and human, along with other races such as elves and nekos which made up the population of the Empire.

As she felt the ring get placed onto her finger, Amelia pulled away from the kiss so she could look down and admire the piece of jewelry. Lifting her hand just the slightest, the princess fiddled with the new object for the few moments that the priest finished his speech. Now it was truly official, and unless death did them part, they were bounded together for the remainder of their lives. The thought wasn't entirely displeasing, but Amelia also was unsure of how Gregor was feeling about this whole situation. It wasn't as if either of them had been given a choice, and if she had to guess, this probably wasn't the outcome the Knight had been expecting his life to turn in.

However she couldn't dwell on this long, as a hand was placed into hers and she was being guided out of the chapel. She let her fingers intertwine with the man's, sticking close to him as they worked their way out of the building and into the quieter area that was outside. Amelia wished she could feel excited about her newly wedded label, but she still couldn't help but think this was a...mistake? Perhaps not a mistake, but maybe something that was not going to work out the way the two of them were expecting.

Once they reached the peaceful air outside of the chapel, the princess released the Knight's hand, her footsteps slowing just the slightest. "You do realize what this means, don't you?" she whispered, looking up at Gregor with a gaze of almost...concern. If her father happened to be killed, then Gregor would take on the role as King of the silver dragons. He would rule alongside her, with whatever knowledge he had of the species. He had the potential to live forever alongside her, but he also ran the risk of dying in the fight against the red dragons. She wanted to know he was at least somewhat informed of the consequences of the marriage.

Feeling the girl's fingers wrap around his own, the knight felt somewhat... comforted by the gesture. While it was true that her kind were known for showing compassion to humans, she was also very much a stranger to him, and for him to show this sort of affection already was... pleasant, in a sense. He squeezed her hand as well... after all, he had no doubt she had quite a few of her own anxieties at the moment.

Once they were clear enough from the crowd, he heard her speak to him once again. He wasn't entirely sure about her meaning... it meant quite a few things, after all, but every single one of them were things he had taken into consideration already. He gave a nod to indicate his affirmation. "I do. And I've already decided to do whatever I have to for our people, and for you."

He knew that the princess didn't have a surviving older brother to take over her clan should anything happen to her father, after all. And he knew what it meant to be married... and what the priest's words on how to empower his amulet entailed, though whether the princess had figured it out yet was a different question. Dragons were known for being quite a bit smarter than humans, so he figured she knew as well.

"We're to dance together in order to begin the reception ceremony," he said to her, steering her in the direction of an elaborate ballroom stocked with exotic food and drink from across the land. "After that, we'll have more time to talk, if you like."

Amelia wasn't surprised that the man was very clearly aware of his choices, but what did come to a shock for her was how...willing he seemed to be. How willing he was to marry a princess that he had never met before, and who he would spend the rest of an eternal life with. Though the princess had a feeling that most of the Knights would agree to this, considering the situation both the Empire and the dragon clan are in, but it still seemed to give her a bit of a pause.

She managed to settle down her worries for the moment though, deciding to tuck them away in the depths of her mind so she could focus on the more positive aspect of things. She was married, to a knight who would be there to protect her, and to help protect her clan. It was a relief, now that she thought about it, that she would have someone at her side to help her rule, assuming the time came. Though she could have a dragon as her forever husband, she was slowly beginning to realize that a knight was not as bad as she had originally come to think.

"Talking would be a good idea...considering we haven't had a chance to do much of it before now," the princess decided after the man's suggestion, her hand managing to reach out and take hold of Gregor's again. The warmth of his hand in hers had been rather comforting, even despite being near strangers. "I'll also be sure to give the amulet its power...after we have a chance to talk," she assured, glancing up at the male and then ahead of them again.

The walk to the ballroom was quick, and the princess wasn't surprise to find that most people had already crowded into the large hall. The building was beautiful, and Amelia found herself admiring it as the two of them made their way towards an open area. "Shall we?" she whispered, stepping closer to the knight in preparation for their dance.
