Agent Paula Myo from Peter F. Hamilton's Commonwealth novels. I've probably re-read them at least a half-dozen times.

All of literature?? That’s hard, man.

Let’s see... Pippin from LOTR, Gandalf also from LOTR, Arthur Dent from Hitchhiker’s Guide, Roland Deschain from The Dark Tower, John Watson from the Sherlock Holmes stories... I probably have more than that but I can’t think of any.

and dreadfully distinct/against the dark a tall white fountain played

Frankenstein's monster. However, I hate Victor himself. And the prophet Zarathustra.

Harry Dresden, from The Dresden Files

He's a human, flawed character who, over the arch of the series, has changed and grown and it's fun to see

The main cast of the Ember novels. Though I've only read An Ember in the Ashes and A Torch Against Night, I have yet to reaf A Reaper At The Gates because I'm terribly broke. . Gotta root for Laia and Elias' fate after what happened to them at the end of Book 2.

From other books would probably be Beren and Lúthien of the Silmarillion. Possibly Anomander Rake as well just for the sword Dragnipur alone.

Agreed that this one is hard! I have favourites for different "categories". The first one to mind and my favourite character for sheer originality and memorability is probably R.M. Renfield from Dracula. He's so strange and well-written that most adaptations of the book for stage or film do not, in my opinion, well convey the depth of him. Madness is such a slippery thing to do well, but Stoker really gave him the most perfectly-timed, eerie devolution.
