Melody sat on the log fence, one of her legs swinging back and forth as the other rested on the highest log, overlooking her deserted childhood house. With a frown on her face she thought back to a life she used to have. A happier life when her family was still alive and this whole place was a thriving ranch. Now, it was empty and broken.

Even still, Melody came here often to get away from the hell that this world has become. Her home was a lonely place to visit, but it was quiet and gave her time to think and recollect herself when she needed it. It also helped that this house was outside the barrier and unless the task force was out on patrol, she was safe and had every right to be here.

Melody’s gaze moved to the sky where she could see the clear and slightly purple haze that was the barrier surrounding the city. The city…..Melody scoffed at the thought. That is where all the healthy normal people got to live, away from people like her, the freaks who had no control over what they have become. The Exiled they called them, the people who were now deemed as dangerous and unwanted. Well, who’s fault was that?

Melody clenched her hands into fists and a few loose pieces of gravel began to float gently into the air. It wasn’t until they were at her eye level did Melody snap out of her angry thoughts and forced herself to calm down. She relaxed her hands, closed her eyes, and listened as the gravel rocks fell back to the ground. Melody wanted justice and was angry at how her own government turned against her and others like her. However, she knew that she had to remain level headed and keep her powers under control. Even a small act such as lifting some gravel off the ground could potentially get her noticed or worse….killed. After all, the government had a way of finding the Exiled, which is why the task force was created. A bunch of mindless brutes who did whatever the government told them to do, like kill innocent people.

Melody hopped off the log fence and walked towards her house and around the back. There was an old rusted swing set which belonged to her and her twin brother when they were kids and a few feet away stood a giant oak tree. Melody loved this tree because despite all the destruction and ruin it stood its ground and continued being as green as ever, it became her small sliver of hope. Beneath the tree was a makeshift headstone. Melody walked up to it and looked down, her eyes welling up with tears. This was her brother’s headstone. He died fighting in the Revolution, fighting for her, or at least Melody thought he died. He went MIA during one of the battles and she was never able to find any trace of him. Whether he was dead or not, this headstone was here as tribute to him.
This was the only grave Melody was able to visit because her parents were buried within city limits, behind the barrier. Since the disease killed them pretty quickly they were buried with honor and were considered “part of the city” because they were upstanding citizens that were unable to survive the disease. Everyone else was shunned and if you died after the disease had been cured your death meant very little to those living in the city.

After a few moments, Melody’s watch began to make faint beeping sounds. She quickly wiped her eyes with the sleeve of her hoodie and moved the other sleeve out of the way to reveal a watch which had a small screen and a red blinking light. This meant she wasn’t going to be safe for long. Melody took a deep breath to make sure her tears went away and she broke into a jog heading away from her childhood home and towards the woods.

Her watch was a piece of technology that worked much like a tracker, and it let her know that a patrol team from the task force must have been near by. This type of tech was hard for the Exiled to obtain so majority of it was stolen or put together with limited supplies. It wasn’t perfect and didn’t always work right but it could mean the difference between life and death.

Nearly two years had passed since the Revolution began, and nothing had been the same since. Those who were contained within the barrier lived relatively normal lives. They relied on the military to keep then protected from the dangers outside of the barrier, and knowing they were safe meant going on with their lives. The military prevented the Exiled from breaching their barrier, and they had permission to terminate anyone with abilities that crossed over into their home.

Apart from the military, the government had also created a special task force for the purpose of going out and hunting down any of the Exiled that they came across. There were twenty groups of twenty-five men, each stationed at different edges of the barrier. These groups left the barrier three to four times per day, and although they didn’t all kill an Exiled each time they went out, they still managed to eliminate many within the span of a week.

Jaxon Hawkins was one of the five hundred total men on the task force. Originally a solider in the military, someone had volunteered him to be a part of the force instead, since he was best at both hand-to-hand combat and long distance shooting. Despite his feeble attempts at protesting, he was sent off to join one of the twenty task force groups.

    -

As it reached time for the group to head outside the barrier, Jaxon followed at the back so that he could sneak off once they were far enough into the woods that surrounded the outside of the barrier. He had a tendency to go off on his own, knowing which areas were best for avoiding the Exiled. He only killed when absolutely necessary, and was one of the only people to actually let the Exiled escape if he caught sight of them.

Although he wasn’t too fond of the people with abilities, he didn’t see the point of being hostile unless given a reason to be. He saw it as useless killing of innocent people, and unless the group was around, he was willing to ignore those people if he happened across one.

The task force went out into the wooded area, and the moment they were out of sight of the barrier, Jaxon slipped off into the denser shrubs almost silently. He only had a few acquaintances in the task force, and none cared enough to notice his absence when he snuck off during their searches.

He knew of a small lake not too far from where the task force would be patrolling, and he preferred to spend his time around the water rather than kill people that didn’t necessarily deserve to die. Jaxon knew better than to go against the government’s word, but he didn’t agree with the way they were handling this situation. He had tried to step down from his military position, and keep from joining the task force, but no one had been allowed to leave the military once the Revolution broke out. He was stuck doing this for as long as it took to wipe out The Exiled, or until the government decided to find a different way to handle it.

Jaxon shook off his thoughts as he pushed through the shrubs, his pace rather quick so he could put distance between himself and the rest of his group. His bow, as well as a pack of arrows, was fastened onto his back. The gear that was given to the task force had been so hi-tech that it had taken Jaxon weeks to figure out how to use most of it. Some of his arrows were normal arrows that he had used as a kid, while others were full of poison, and some blew up the moment they hit something. He didn’t mind the options, but he preferred less fancy gadgets. Such as the two daggers that he had tucked away at his belt. They were two items that had been given to him by his father when he was much younger, and he had somehow managed to convince the force to allow him to keep them. They were important to him, and they tended to be his weapon of choice anyway.

With his head running amuck, the solider wasn’t paying as close of attention to his surroundings as he should have been. His pace was still quick, and as he pushed through the last bit of shrubbery, he felt the weight of a body come crashing into him.

Before he knew it, his back had crashed onto the leafy ground, and it seemed that he had dragged whatever knocked into him down as well. Although it had seemed unintentional, his automatic instinct caused Jaxon to slip his dagger from his belt, lifting it to the neck of what seemed to be a person above him.

He was a man of few words, and with his adrenaline pumping, he couldn’t quite come up with the correct thing to say in the moment. He couldn’t tell if this person was an Exiled, as some of the people outside the barrier were without abilities, and had just been left behind by the government. But it was impossible to tell those apart from the people he was supposed to kill.

As Melody reached the woods, her heart began beating quicker because her watch was beeping relentlessly now. She pushed a button on it to turn off the sound so it didn't draw any attention. She took a glance back behind her to make sure she still had time and when she didn't see anyone she took off running to put as much distance between her and the possible task force that was nearby.

This was always the worst part, just being out and about trying to breathe air and pretend everything is fine and then having a somewhat reliable piece of technology on your wrist tell you you might die today. Then it's every man for himself, run and get to your hideout until it's safe again.

This is what Melody was going to do. She needed to reach the underground hideout in which she has been staying recently. Melody made it a habit not to stay in one hideout for too long because if a task force happens to find out about it they will either shoot everyone on sight or pick and choose who goes and who stays. Sometimes they would even take people and then you won't ever see them again. Where they are taken can probably only be explained in Melody's worst nightmares. Were they taken back to the city to be shown off as an example of what happens to an abomination? Were more science experiments done on them?
Melody didn't want to find out, so she ran. Every time.

She came to an abrupt stop when she heard voices coming from a distance. It sounded like a group of people and the sound was coming from somewhere in front of her. Shit... Melody thought to herself as she realized she has been running towards her enemy instead of away. Cursing the stupid watch on her wrist she turned sharply and ran to the right trying to stay light on her feet as she went, so not to step on any twigs or dry leaves and make unnecessary noise. She also tried not to freak out and make her powers go haywire because the task force can track her through her powers. Or at least that was the popular opinion among the Exiled.

Melody was running in the direction of a lake she knew she could cross as an alternate route to the hideout. She took a quick look over her shoulder to make sure she was still in the clear and as soon as she turned her head back all she saw was a figure in front of her and then before she knew it she was on the ground. There was a struggle and her eyes had a hard time focusing on what exactly she was struggling with. That is until she felt the cold steel of a blade against her neck, she realized it was a man she crashed into. Instinctively Melody reached out her hand and grabbed his wrist with her hands to keep him from ending her life on the spot. Her breath was fast, her hair was wild and parts of it in her face but as both her and this man remained locked in the position they were in, she had a moment to get a look at him. Panic rising quickly, Melody realized he was from the task force. Not sure what to do she let go of his wrist, pushed herself off of him as quickly as possible and stepped away from him until her back hit a tree trunk.

None of them said anything for what seemed like hours and Melody was trying to asses the situation as well as her options. There was a handful of times when she came in contact with a member of the task force, but she always managed to get away because she was never this close before. Figures, one second of not paying attention and now she might die.

The guy looked strong and much taller than her and Melody knew that her options are probably limited. Sure she has super powers and she could probably kill him if she wanted to, but truth be told, Melody didn't like using her powers much. In fact, she liked to pretend they didn't exist. Thus, she was not very skilled in using them and she was afraid she might lose control.

So...instead of acting like a fugitive she decided to try and weasel her way out another way. Pretend to be normal. Melody regained control of her breathing and slowly raised her hands in the air as a sign of a truce and that she meant no harm. "I'm sorry.." she finally said slowly. "I just didn't see where I was going" she continued trying to remain calm, but her eyes stayed on the guy at all times. Watching him in case he tried something funny.

It had taken him a moment, but Jaxon soon realized that the person above him was... A girl. She was small, at least in comparison to himself, and from the look in her eyes, he figured it was safe to assume she was one of the Exiled. He could feel her hands close around his wrist, and his body seemed to tense up in preparation for a shock, or a burn. The force had been told that the abilities these people had were endless, and there was no way to know until it was used against you.

That was the moment he should’ve ended her life. Any other man on the force would’ve sliced her throat the moment she put hands on them...but Jaxon wasn’t that type of guy. Not only that, but before he could even truly react, the frightened girl was scrambling off of him and backing up. Jaxon took the moment to sit up, keeping his dagger clasped in his hand as he watched the girl closely.

It seemed that he wasn’t the only one that was unsure of what to do in this situation, and after a moment of just gazing at the girl, he pushed himself up from the ground so he was no longer in such a vulnerable position. He had been correct in his assumption that the girl was small, as he was sure he towered over her by nearly a foot. But despite the space between the two, he knew better than to let his guard down. He knew she didn’t necessarily have to touch him in order to harm him.

He was about to take a step back, planning to turn away and leave before things could get out of hand, but the girl’s voice stopped him before he could move. He glanced towards her again, looking her over from head to toe before lifting his shoulders into a shrug. “You’re lucky it was me that you ran into,” he finally spoke, realizing then just how lucky she truly was. As long as she didn’t do anything rash, her luck would remain for a while longer.

To show that he was fairly harmless as well, he very slowly tucked the knife back into it’s designated spot on his belt. He had come across a great number of Exiled before, but he had never had this close of an interaction before. “They’re headed that way,” he started to speak again, lifting his hand to point in the direction of his task force. “In forty-five minutes, they’ll be circling back this way. I suggest hanging around the lake if you want to avoid them completely. I can’t tell you exactly which areas they’ll search so...the lake is your best bet,” he added, finally taking that step back from her. Of course, he shouldn’t be relaying this information to her. If she was a part of a bigger group of Exiled, they could ambush his force as they came back through here. But something told him she wouldn’t do that.

After giving her the warning, he decided he had done his duty of helping her to the best of his ability, and he took another few steps away. “No more running into people, eh? You’ll get yourself killed that way,” he murmured, nodding to her before actually turning his back to the girl so he could continue his own venture towards the lake.

Melody stood there, her mind racing at what this guy was going to do. Her hands still in the air hoping for a miracle. Her mind wondered for a second and she hoped that if he decides to shoot her or stab her, that he does it quickly. Living for 24 years isn't that bad right? Some people have it worse.

But then another part of her wondered if she should just make his head explode and be on her merry way. Could she even do that? As an Exiled, you don't ever really know what your power is exactly unless it's obvious. Nor do you know the extent of them unless you practice. Having mutated genes because of an experimental drug doesn't exactly come with a training manual, so what you get you get and you just have to learn to live with it

Melody was sure she was telekinetic, but seeing as she doesn't use her powers much she wasn't sure what the extent of her powers were. All she knows is that it's easy to lose control. If she gets too angry or emotional in some way then things can get messy.

She tried to remain calm but the way he was sizing her up made her uncomfortable and she eventually put her hands down and was prepared to run again if the moment called for it. Melody was about to do just that until she heard him speak in response to what she said. Looks like he had figured her out anyway.

Why is he pretending to want to help her? Melody didn't trust him for a second. It had to be a trap of some sort. He was also heading towards the lake! She wished he would just turn and walk the other way. The lake was her short cut to the hideout. Melody knew she couldn't go in the same direction or otherwise she would risk exposing the other Exiled she stayed with and she couldn't do that.

Weighing her options, which again were limited, she decided to hang back for a bit and let him go first, then if she felt safe enough she would head to the lake too but take a different path to get there just in case. She wasn't sure if she should say anything to him at all, for fear of saying the wrong thing and pissing him off so she simply said, "Yeah....I'll try" in response to his advice of not running into people anymore. Melody didn't like his random act of kindness and she watched him very carefully as he turned his back to her to walk away.

Jaxon didn't stop to think that the girl may not even consider his words to be helpful, considering it was unlikely she would even believe a thing that he told her. At least, in his mind, he had done some good and that was what mattered most. It was up to her to decide whether or not she took his advice. If he had wanted to kill her, didn't she realize he would've done it by now? Although he would admit, he didn't trust that she wasn't going to harm him even though she hadn't threatened him in any way yet. It was reasonable to distrust each other.

As he started to walk off from the girl, he surprised himself by glancing over his shoulder to look back at the girl. "You're welcome to tag along. I am headed that way, after all," he spoke before he could stop himself, raising a brow at the girl. He didn't expect her to accept the offer, so without really waiting for a verbal response, he began to walk back in the direction of the lake. He figured if she wanted to follow him, then she had the option, but if she wanted to take an alternative route then he would have one less person to worry about on the journey to the water.

The solider was good at moving through the woods quickly and silently, not wanting to draw any unnecessary attention to himself. He was sure there wouldn't be too many Exiled around this area, since it was the spot that the task force typically walked through. He was surprised that the girl had even been around here, but there were occasions where they would come across people as they were attempting to leave.

It didn't take too much time for Jaxon to reach the lake, and after quick surveillance of the area, he deemed it safe enough to approach. He made his way to the water cautiously, his eyes still searching for any signs of danger despite being sure there was no one around. On the edge of the lake was a large, flattened rock, the same one that he would go to each time he visited the lake. It was a nice seat, and it gave him a good view of everything around him.

He climbed up onto the rock with minimal effort, using it as his perch as he took a moment to relax and enjoy the silence. Being in the task force meant never having a moment to yourself, so he never took times like this for granted. He did check behind him a few times, wondering if the girl had followed him, or if she would be passing by this way as well. It didn't click with him until then, but it had seemed as if she were going this direction when they knocked into one another.

Melody stood in her spot slightly confused as to why this guys was coming off so nice and non-threatening. When he spoke to her last and then turned and walked off, she couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at him in return. Melody was trying to figure out what his angle is and what he could possibly be plotting in the back of his mind. It wasn't in her nature to dislike people this much, she believed in trusting someone until they gave her a reason not to. However, situations involving the task force were almost always unpleasant and Melody was used to being in survival mode.

Still mostly suspicious, Melody decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and hoped that he would stay true to his word and actually leave her alive. She figured that as long as she doesn't give him a reason to kill her, maybe, just maybe he would actually let her go. Relaxing a little, Melody watched him disappear behind some branches as he walked in the direction of the lake. She knew she needed to go that way, because if there was anything he was right about, it was the fact that his patrol team will be coming by here at some point so the only logical direction was the lake.

Exasperated, Melody gave up and cautiously started walking towards the lake as well. She didn't follow his direct path and instead took a slightly longer way around all the while thinking that this will make for hell of a story with the other Exiles. Melody comes in contact with a member of the task force and lives to tell the tale, who would have thought? As she walked through the woods, Melody realized how tired she actually felt. It was exhausting being on the run all the time, spending all that energy on feeling tense, being on edge, and trying not to die. She couldn't help but wonder if this task force member every felt this way? Melody assumed that if he ever did feel this way, it's not very often at all seeing as he gets to go home to a nice barrier to keep him safe.

Her thoughts consuming her mind, Melody walked through a clearing that lead to the edge of the lake. Seeing the water instantly calmed her and she breathed in the air it produced. It smelled clean and fresh and oddly reminded her of home, the home she used to have. Melody was about to start crossing the lake where it was the most shallow, when something caught her eye. She turned and saw the task force guy just perching on a rock looking like the hunter that he is.

Melody appreciated him leaving her alive, but it's not to say that he was just going to let her leave and not be at least slightly curious as to where she was going. She contemplated if she trusted him enough to go in the right direction towards the hideout, or if she should go the wrong way and try to throw him off. It would take her hours to get back to the hideout if she chose wrong way but at least she could attempt to lose this guy for good and reduce the risk of exposing the others.

Finally choosing to go the wrong way, Melody started to walk along the edge of the lake in the direction of where the task force member was.

The sound of the lake did it’s job if relaxing the tense muscles of the soldier, and if he hadn’t been on such high alert, he probably could have taken a little cat nap. He knew better than to take that risk though, and no matter how peaceful his surroundings seemed, it was never safe to let his guard down. This was proven to be true as Jaxon soon noticed some movement out of the corner of his eye, and when he turned to look in that direction, he was actually a bit surprised to see that the girl had followed him here...or, she was at least passing through.

He had no real intention of approaching her, seeing as he didn’t want to cause anymore incidents between them, but it looked like she was coming his direction anyway. He sat up a little straighter, keeping an eye on her as she walked along the lake. He didn’t usually take a moment to think about the Exiled, or about what may have happened to their families, but he found himself thinking about it now. He wondered how many of the Exiled had families looking for them inside the barrier, or how many of them lost their families to the Revolution...or the disease.

Or how many of them lost their families because of him.

He quickly dismissed the thought before he could think on it for too long, reminding himself that death was what happened when there was a war. There was no way he could single-handedly convince the entire government to leave these people alone. He just had to obey their commands, and one day all of this would be over.

As the girl got closer to him, he finally decided one the proper words to say to her. However, the opportunity never presented itself, since the moment he parted his lips to speak, he saw the leaves of a shrub just faintly shifting. To most it would have just looked like a small breeze had ruffled the shrub, and if it weren’t for the unusual glint within the bush, he probably wouldn't have noticed it either.

The moment he put two and two together, Jaxon quickly pushed off the rock, jumping down to the solid ground. When his feet touched the earth, he instantly started to run at the girl. Whether or not she noticed his approach, it only took a handful of seconds for him to reach her. He tackled the girl into the water, just as a bullet whizzed by the area she had just been standing.

It was a bit awkward just walking along the lake while having a member of the task force just staring at you, but Melody didn't feel so threatened by him anymore. Their encounter was definitely unusual and a part of her was still unsure how she was still alive, but she counted her blessings as her shoes touched the edge of the water as she walked. Maybe today would be a decent day.

Melody tried not to stare at the guy too much but as she got closer to him she stole a few glances and got a better look at him. He was actually rather handsome which was interesting to think about a guy who could have killed her today. He also looked fit, healthy, and put together. This made Melody look down at her clothes briefly as she walked, comparing how ridiculous she must look. Her clothes weren't dirty or old per se, the Exiled had ways of obtaining newer things, but they also weren't that new or nice. The differences between them couldn't be more obvious in terms of where they came from. Which is a funny thought considering everyone used to live in the same place and belonged to the same city/town/state and government. Now, everything couldn't have been more divided.

At one point, Melody could swear she saw the guy shift as if he was about to say something to her. Slightly interested, her pace began to slow down and she looked over at him curiously but what she saw next took her by complete surprise. The guy jumped off the rock so fast that Melody had no time to formulate a single thought because in mere seconds he was on her, pushing her down into the water, his body covering hers almost completely. That panic she experienced from their earlier encounter came rushing back in an instant. So he lied.....I guess he is going to kill me after all.

Melody didn't hear or see the first bullet but then more started flying through the trees and hit the water and rocks next to her head, her feet, it felt like the bullets were raining all around her and she finally understood what was happening. The rest of his team must have found her. Her eyes went wide and she squirmed underneath the task force soldier who was......doing what exactly? Protecting her or keeping her here until his friends got here? Melody didn't like any of this and her instincts pushed her to get away. "What are you doing?!" she said to the man on top of her in a panicked voice. "I need to go, please!" Melody wasn't sure if pleading with him would help anything but she had to try. She pushed against him as hard as she could but he wouldn't budge and the bullets wouldn't stop. She wanted to cry but her panic was bigger than her need to cry. She shut her eyes and screamed, "NO!!" and then....silence.

No bullets could be heard, no movement. Melody opened her eyes and managed to move her head to see what was going on. To her shock and possibly horror, she could see at least 10 bullets just floating in the air. Did she just do that? Did she make those bullets stop? Now she was sure this guy was going to kill her. She lost control and showed her powers and she was sure this was all he needed to finish her off. But she decided to give it one more try. "Please...." she pleaded and looked up at him hoping for some miracle to happen.

Jaxon had no idea what he was thinking. Saving the girl would not only get her killed, but also himself if they were to get caught. He wasn't sure if any of the men had seen his face before he took the girl down into the water, but as he positioned his body over hers to act as a shield, he could guarantee the task force knew he was one of them. Whether or not they specifically knew it was him, but it was only a matter of time before they figured it out. He also didn't realize that this situation made it look as though he had set her up; Lead her to the lake so that his men could ambush her. He hoped that wasn't one of her thoughts...but clearly it must've ran through her mind because the girl was soon pushing against him.

Physically, the solider was much stronger than the small girl beneath him. Her pushes against his chest weren't even enough to nudge him, and he made no move to get off of her as the bullets continued to rain down into the water. He kept his head ducked down, wanting to at least protect it since the rest of his body could heal. "Stop moving," he hissed, wanting to keep her out of the line of fire. The bullets were hitting close, and he could feel one graze across his right bicep. The sting was bad, but the soldier had experienced much worse than this. "Just stop moving and let me-" he started to try to speak again, but was cut off by the girl's scream.

His own body tensed up, expecting her to catch fire, or blow him up. Anything to get him off so that she could get away. But instead, he was met with almost complete silence. The only thing that he could hear was his own ragged breaths. At first he didn't realize he had shut his eyes, but he slowly blinked them open when he didn't feel any pain other than the slight burn of his right arm.

Confused by the silence, Jaxon slowly turned his head to glance behind him, and the solider couldn't believe his eyes. The bullets...were hanging in the air. One of which was mere centimeters away from flying through his shoulder. "Holy shit," even he could barely hear the curse that left his lips. He had never seen something like this before. He knew it must have been her doing, and although he was rather awed, he knew they needed to move quickly now.

Hearing her quiet plea, the solider looked back down at the girl, holding her gaze for the first time. "Just trust me," he whispered, lifting one of his hands out of the water to feel around on his vest. After yanking open one of the Velcro pockets, he pulled out two small wristbands. "Trust me," he repeated, grabbing one of her hands and pulling it towards him.

He carefully slapped the wristband onto her wrist, then quickly did the same for himself. "They can't see us now. We can see each other, and they can't see us. But they know we haven't moved. We're going to get out of here, okay?" he spoke quickly again, lifting his gaze from her hand to look towards her face again. "I'm going to get off you. As soon as I get up, we're running, alright? I need you to follow me. You understand?" he did his best to come up with a plan as he spoke, wanting to work quickly since he had no idea how long she could keep those bullets from hitting them. If the two of them worked together, they could escape.

The wristbands that he had placed on both of their wrists were another of the fancy gadgets he hated to use. It was meant to help the task force escape if attacked by an Exiled. Anyone without the wristbands could not see the people wearing them, but those that had them on could see one another. However, anything they interacted with could still be seen. If he were to pick up a rock, it would look as though the rock were floating, just like the bullets currently were. He had taken them without permission, and he didn't want to wait around long enough to see if any of the other soldiers had some as well.

He didn't have time to wait for a response from the girl, and after he finished speaking, Jaxon was already beginning to move off of her. He rolled to the side to make sure he avoided the floating bullets before he pushed himself to his feet. "This way!" he glanced back at her briefly before he took off running in the direction of his rock. Whether or not she followed was up to the girl.
