Due to the unknown nature of the supervirus, all that can be said is that the Progenitor Virus is considered to be a sister of most of notable cancers in the world (Bladder Cancer, Breast Cancer, Colon and Rectal Cancer, Endometrial Cancer, Kidney Cancer, etc.). However what has been observed is that when the virus infects its host, the cells in the body cease to function (otherwise meaning they cease to die) but they also cease to grow, creating a state of permanent life for the host. However, blood cells still continue to die off. Thus, through past experimentation, the host must find a suitable source to replenish its tainted blood cells. So, they must find an untainted source of blood in order to continue sustaining themselves. In addition to this, some of the mutations found in hosts afflicted the Progenitor Virus actually aid in the process of obtaining blood.
Although other than this knowledge, little else is known about the virus or its creation.
Vampyres are terrifying, yet tragic, creatures. When a human victim is turned, they experience twenty-four hours of excruciating pain, both physically and mentally. Their physical state, as well as mental state, go through an intense vampyrication process known as the "
First Song". The First Song is where the body begins to deteriorate, or stagnate (whichever word one chooses), and the mind begins to meld with that of the one who turned the human in the first place. The knowledge and pain that comes with being turned is transferred to the new fledgling. However ten to thirty-five percent of the humans turned do not survive the process, whether they die via the pain, or their minds break and they live purely off survival instincts, killing and drinking others mindlessly. These mindless (feral) vamypres are known as "
Lycanthropes".
Lycanthropes: Lycanthropes, or merely just Lycans, are vamypres who had their minds snapped when they experienced the First Song. However that is not all that happens here. After a period of twenty-four to forty-eight hours, the vampyre slowly begins to mutate. They began to take on more animal characteristics.
However those that do survive, however, are often colder and more filled with emotional angst than they were before. The first few weeks of existence as a vampyre is extremely difficult as the body has to adjust to its new strength, speed, senses, dietary requirements, and whatever power is gained.
In speaking of power, vampyres have five times the strength and two times the speed of their human-counterparts without the need for change in their physical mass. They also gain a new power upon their transformation. The strength of their power corresponds with the phase of the moon. The fuller it is, the more power the vampyre is. Though it is realized that a typical vampyre does not die in sunlight; they are merely weakened by it. And in order to sustain all of this, a vampyre must feed at least once per six days or they will experience what is called "
Zerfallen" or "
Decay" where the mind will begin to break down until there is nothing left but survival instinct.
Although there are other, miscellaneous, types of vampyres that dwell within the night-sphere and they are listed here:
Midnights: Also known as "Dhampirs", Midnights are the halfbreeds in vampyric society. Born of the unholy union of human and vampyre, they are often shunned by all but their own kind. This has caused many to be spiteful towards the world. Others, however, seek to create peace by attempting to set up things like blood donations so vampyres wouldn't have to forcefully drink from others. Still others grow up without their parents and do not meet others of their type, and as such do not realize what they are. As Midnights are born of humans and vampyres, they share qualities of both. They have twice the speed and strength of a human, and their power cycles with the moon. They are not affected by the sun in any way. They can consume anything for nutrients, but require blood at least once a month. Also they age regularly from age ten, but then age at a third the pace (ex: if they were twenty-five, they would appear fifteen).
Reapers: Reapers are the most feared creatures that exist in the known world. After the first one was accidentally created by the vampyre "Queen", others were subsequently made. One after another these Reapers were created until a small group of these vampyric monsters was formed, and thus were given the name, "Reapers" to match their skill and career: to reap the souls of those who cause trouble. Reapers are made by breaking a victim's mind once, as a human, through (primarily) torture (or other methods), waiting for some sign of life to reform, and then proceeding to break that victim's mind again as a vampyre. The result is a mass increase in power and a new inherent ability: the ability to gain more power by drinking the blood of others, including vampyres.
Often, these Reapers represent something darker and are granted a higher state of power from something that does not dwell within the possible (Ex: The original Reaper, Michael, is consumed with Death, and if he needs to, can utilize the conceptual power of Death to survive and/or accomplish a goal.). However by dipping themselves into the impossible, they slowly lose themselves with each use. And the only way to counter the instability from the impossible is to find a willing vessel to hold the power of the impossible in. This vessel has to be a vampyre. The vessel will often act as a servant to the Reaper once they become the vessel. Nontrons are the best option as vessels as they can withstand the most power being added to their physical bodies. Also, becoming a vessel means that that person will be able to use the Reaper's power as though they are their own, and they will be the only one to able to enter their master's mind in the event that they must be saved from corruption, often by taking a portion of it onto themselves.
