Chaos reigned.
Looking down at the sea of undead that was attacking the base, Salem felt the anticipation tingling along his spine. Even as he watched the ground team eliminate one Behemoth, he saw two more along the perimeter of the wall among the rest of the infected. Sighting in one one of them, he watched as they rammed the concrete wall with enough force to dent the concrete. The amount of force required to do that was staggering. Again and again, they rammed the wall as he considered taking the shot. But he’d seen what it had taken to eliminate the first one, and even though he was certain he could make the shot, he was less sure they could put enough rounds in both heads before the wall broke down. He knew that it wouldn’t be long until they began to flood inside the base, where they would then be able to diverge with some of them disappearing into hidey holes elsewhere that would have to be searched.
Darryl’s words snapped Crow back into the moment, making him shake his head in response. A quick check ensured his weapons had fresh magazines, and after taking a breath, he proceeded to fast-rope onto the building.
The moment his feet touched the ground, his rifle was in his hands as he double checked to make sure the rooftop was secure. While he looked around, one of the Marine snipers got up from his position to meet with the new arrivals.
“I don’t know who the hell you guys are, but we’re damned glad for the reinforcements. I’m Sergeant Major Leon Jameson Grimm, USMC.” The marine said, shaking hands with Salem, then Darryl.
“You’re going to need a hell of a lot more in a minute. There’s a couple of big ones about to break into the Eastern wall. We need to eliminate them, repair the damage, then reinforce the wall. After that, we’ll need to secure the base.” Salem responded, even as Grimm cocked his head to the side and raised an eyebrow.
“And who the hell are you? General Patton?” Grimm asked sarcastically.
“Captain Salem Crow, U.S. Army Special Forces. You the one in charge?” Salem asked, walking towards the eastern edge of the building.
“I’ve taken control of the situation temporarily, but there’s probably some higher ranking officers around.” Grimm said, watching as he moved.
Salem chuckled at the sergeant major’s words. “Of course you have. Shit rolls downhill, right?” Even as he spoke, he heard saw a sudden flood of infected inside the wall. “Shit, we need to cut them off and stem the flow. Got any assets we can use?”
“There's a few Humvees down there with mounted weapons, couple of LAV’s.” Grimm said, observing the situation as the gunfire increased. “Just tell me what you need.”
“You just give us some cover. See if you can get your gunners to stem the flow. Keep an eye out for an armored Jeep, they're friends of ours.” Salem said, then looked to Darryl. “You joining me on the ground, or providing additional sniper support? If I can reach an LAV and get it rolling, we could block the hole. Maybe get the chopper to draw some of them away a klick or two away at least.”
Even as he said it a sudden movement to the right revealed a pack of Hunters suddenly on the rooftop. “Shit!” Salem said even as he lined up his first shot, firing on instinct just as it leapt for him, taking it down. “Hostiles on the rooftops!”
