    One night a city was destroyed by a falling star in what would later come to be known as the Starfall event. That event was the start of a tale of a changing world. Kingdoms grew distrustful of each other, some broke into civil wars, others declared wars on those who used to be allies. The world erupted into what could only be described as hell. From the fire of that hell though arose five heroes that were in the service of a god. The five heroes, guided by the gods, went from one corner of the world to the next, rooting out and defeating the evil behind the chaos of the world. Over time, kingdoms allied themselves with the five heroes and worked with them to defeat the evil that was lurking around every corner, until the world was finally at peace again. A tale of the ages, a history lesson to always be remembered. So why don't we start at the beginning?

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Despite it being late at night, the town of Lelothia was full of life and noise. They were in the middle of a huge cultural festival that lasted for a week every year with the beginning of spring. The festival was to pray to all of the gods for renewal, warm weather, and happy times. It was this kind of festival that made their mission all the more perfect. Among the celebrating people, four people who did not belong moved like shadows to the Ordinal directions as they prepared for their mission from the lords of hell.
    They didn't understand the reason behind this order originally until they came to the festival and saw just how many people from other lands were also here. It would prove to be a worthy sacrifice to the lord of hell and would serve to shake the faith the races have in their gods. With the four servants in position, they began to pray and runes of fire appeared around each of them in circles. After a moment of speaking the prayer, the rune circles shot outward, moving to meet up with each of the other servants to form a giant circle around the town.
    When the runes connected at each servant the ritual was complete and in the night sky there was a bright flash, grabbing everyone's attention from the festival. To those who looked up at the sky to investigate what the flash was, all they would see would be something that no one could have imagined. A ball of fire was falling from the sky and it was heading towards the town. There was no time for anyone to make a run for it, and they all knew it to be true. All they could do was pray to the gods to save them, but what they didn't realize, was that the gods couldn't hear their prayers anymore.
    Within a matter of seconds that felt like an eternity, the fireball crashed into the town, leaving a large black crater that was larger than the borders of the town itself. Not a single soul survived, not even the servants to the lords of hell made it out alive. The buildings, the animals, everything was gone. All that was left was the black as ash crater. At least, that is what the demon lords thought.
    In the center of the crater, at it's the deepest spot stood a man, seemingly unscathed by falling star. He looked to the sky before speaking. "So it begins, the battle of the gods." He raised his hands to the sky and as he did so, four runes of light appeared in a circle in the air above him. Each rune could be read in the magical language as having a name. They were runes that despite the world no longer having magic, were runes that were passed down through the ages of time. The man looked at the runes before speaking out there names. "Four heroes of the gods. It is time for you to rise once again. Rune of the lord of animals, rune of the lord of war, rune of the lord of peace, and rune of the lord of knowledge. Choose your champions and save their souls so that they may once again be called upon to serve the gods and save those who can not save themselves." As he spoke out each rune they glowed brightly before moving ten feet from the mysterious figure. In each of the ordinal directions, ten feet out, from him, four bodies raised out of the ashes and into the air. A dwarf, two elves, and a human had been chosen by the ancient souls.
    The mysterious figure walked to each body that floated in the air, starting with the dwarf. "The lord of animals has chosen you. You carry the bloodline of those who served the gods. Ketri Ograsdottir, may you take some of my power and come back to life again." As he spoke, what he said could be heard among the four champions wherever their minds were currently at. He then moved to the first elf. "The lord of war has chosen you. You carry the bloodline of those who served the gods. Valerin, may you take some of my power and come to life again." He then moved to the next elf. "The lord of peace has chosen you. You carry the bloodline of those who served the gods. Adorra Eos, may you take some of my power and come back to life again." Lastly, he moved to the human before speaking. The lord of knowledge has chosen you. You carry the bloodline of those who served the gods. Kyrie Declan, may you take some of my power and come back to life again." He then moved back to his previous spot in between all of them before speaking.
    As he spoke the runes burned themselves onto the faces of the four heroes before disappearing as if the mark was never there. The bodies slowly floated to the ground until they were resting on the ashes of those who had fallen. "Come! I, Etmere, have need of you heroes once again! Rise from the ashes of those that you rest upon." Life slowly came back to the four heroes around him. "You four have been chosen to carry a great burden, but with every burden comes a great gift. The gift of the gods! Now rise and serve again!" After he finished speaking, three of the beams of light shot into the sky, leaving the bodies. However, as Etmere looked to the beam of light that was still left he saw the light of the beam had turned to a dark red. Etmere walked over to the body and put his hand into the beam. The body was rejecting the gift of the ancient spirit and as such the soul was not allowing the body to be reborn. There was only one thing he could do. He grabbed the beam of light and it turned white again before it started to flow into Etmere's arm instead of the sky. As this happened, the male elven body below him started to lose it's life again and started to die. "I am sorry Valerin, but you are unable to hold the hero of the past and as such you will die like the others. I wish you luck in the afterlife friend. May peace settle over your mind." With that, the beam of light left the elven man and finished absorbing into the god. All four bodies had on them the items and clothes they had when they died from the Starfall. Three had survived the process, one had died. It was more than he had hoped for. Hopefully down the road, he could find someone to give the fourth gift to.
    The color was the same one she’d enjoyed most of her life.
    It was a shade of green that matched her hair, but also that this very festival celebrated, and their prayers requested – the green of new life, of fresh crops, of the season turning from struggle and cold to bustling work, sunshine and warmth. It was appropriate to have this festival here, Adorra mused, in the fertile land some distance outside of the heart of Ateris; here, where the smell of rich, black earth lingered in the air long after it had been tilled. It wouldn’t be long until the freshly sown fields were lush and green, teaming with life… At least, that was the picture in Addora’s head, as she dressed for the festival. It was so stark in contrast to the unbeknownst reality, that the fates must have laughed.
    The gown was this shade of green, its fluid-like silk strategically transparent and draped over her curves from a halter-style securing at the back of her neck then bound around her torso and over her hips with a meticulously crafted corset. Her hair was bound behind her but loosely so, and laced with bronze strands of ribbon through the teal-tipped strands of chartreuse.
    It was a celebration, after all. A girl like Addora couldn't pass up the opportunity to dress up - and nor should she, for that matter.
    There wasn't a moment throughout the day that wasn't spent outside, under the gently warming rays of the sun or in an open-air room, the welcome breeze stirring all those reveling in the festival. Most of the elf's time was spent keeping the company of the council elders and a select few of the elves from the community, who were just an concerned with showing the young diplomat a good time as she was interested in having one. Sure, it wasn't uncommon in her line of work that she got to let loose a little, and she always had to act with the fact that she represented Aeroff and her queen in mind, but this festival in particular was known to be particularly obstreperous and Addora had plans. Yes, among them was finding leads on the whereabouts of her cousin and the betterment of the elvish community here in this border town, but others involved numerous libations and good-looking men. She would pursue both with dedication, though, perhaps at different times.
    As daylight waned and night swallowed the sky, the bonfires were lit and it seemed as though the festival gained a renew, feverish life - at least, for a while. There was dancing, music flowing over the festival goers and the city pounding with the drum beat. After a time, many succumbed to the intoxication or the length of the day, but for Addora and her entourage, the night was still young.
    That was why they saw it.
    Their imminent doom.
    Addora had found herself in the arms of a chivalrous human guardsman whose smile lines hadn't quite settled into his handsome face and together they watched as the ball of fire broke through the atmosphere, turning every which color, including that green. Her nails dug into his upper arms, a single breathless word on her lips,
    "Father..."
    ---
    A painful, aching gasp filled her lungs with air as life was restored to her body. Addora's vision was blurred with the ordeal and the lingering light from the beams, but after a few moments she could make out the stars in the pitch-black sky. There was no light other than the pinpricks and the moon, she noticed, and slowly started to push herself into a sitting position to look around; what she observed set her to trembling.
    There were four other figures with her in what she soon figured out was a crater and all around them was ash. She went to lift a hand to her mouth to stifle a gasp, but she saw that her rich, honey skin was covered in the ash as well. With a little more time, her eyes adjusted in the darkness, and she could better make out the other beings; her mouth was left gently agape at the sight of her cousin there, not too far away from her, and standing over him a figure who seemed untouched by the scene around him. She watched the man withdraw his hand from her cousin and Valerin's body sag into the ashes under him, lifeless. Confused, hot tears flooded into Addora's eyes, blurring her vision and she wanted to go to him, but she couldn't put the strength in her legs to do so.
    The campus was closed today because of the festival but that didn't mean it was empty. The head librarian had nearly all of his pages here using one of the rare moments where there were no students to catch up on filing the books. The festival was perfectly timed just after semester finals giving students an outlet to celebrate their good grades or morn their bad grades. Either way the town would be full of drunken students. Kyrie wasn't as fortunate, she wasn't sure if she would get to partake in them celebrations. They had been at it all day and weren't any closer to being done. It seemed that every student in the campus had dropped every book they had ever checked out into the bin all at the same time. Kyrie was standing ontop of a rolling ladder while another page pushed her around the book shelves handing her books. “I swear we are going to be here until the next festival.” The young man pushing her around said, handing her another two books.
    “Perhaps, Jiron.” Kyrie said, putting the books back on the shelf then quickly grabbed the ladder as Jiron moved her down the bookshelf then tossing her a few more books.
    “We'd be done sooner if you two stopped yapping.” A young woman around the age of Kyrie said, dropping another stack of books in Jiron's cart. “Old man Seros won't let us leave until we are done.”
    Kyrie was about to respond when a hush came over the library as an older man walked through the library a confused look on his face at the sight of all the pages running around. “What are you all doing here still? I told Professor Seros to let you all go before sunset.” The man said, looking around again at all the pages none of them moving. “Don't make me repeat myself out with you all. I'll deal with Seros.”
    The pages didn't need to be told twice and the room cleared in a blink of an eye. Kyrie was right among them quickly heading out into the city square. Her mother wasn't expecting her home until much later knowing how Seros could be so she decided to check out the festival. She was starving not having eaten since breakfast and went straight to the food vendors. Standing in line she heard everyone around her start a commotion. It took a while to see what it was then looked up seeing the ball of fire heading toward them. Kyrie abandoned the line and ran to the nearest building finding it to be locked. She tried several more but each one was the same. The only shelter she could find was a small archway that she pressed as close to the wall as she could. When the fireball hit she couldn't see it but she felt it before everything turned dark.
    Ketri hated festivals.
    Not for what they represented, to be fair. The harvest was a joyous time, and she was sure that the people of this city had much to celebrate. But there was something about staying up until the first hours of light combined with copious amounts of alcohol that tended to bring out the most annoying behavior in folks. She already imagined the mess the next morning, and shuddered.
    Luckily, the ranger was not planning on staying for long. On a cumbersome, makeshift sled that she dragged behind her there laid a deer carcass, her latest quarry. She just needed to sell the beast to the local butcher and she could be on her merry way. As she slogged through the crowded streets, she collected quite a few stares. She was used to it, though- people weren't used to seeing many dwarves this far south. Not to mention a dwarf with an owl resting on her shoulder. The bird twisted its neck back and forth, eyeing the many passerby before drawing closer to Ketri's neck.
    "Easy there, Harkon," she whispered affectionately as the owl's talons gripped her shoulder a little too tightly. "We'll be out of this chaos soon enough." As the sun lowered, painting the sky with reds and purples, Ketri finally found the butcher. Unfortunately, she also found a sign on the door that read "Out celebrating, come back tomorrow." Great.
    Harkon gave a soft hoot. "Alright, buddy. Go get yourself some dinner. Looks like we'll be here for a while." She lifted her fist and allowed the owl to take off above the dense crowds and make his way into the nearby woods. In the meantime, Ketri was determined to find something to do with this deer. She began another exhausting trek through the narrow streets, hoping to come across a small alcove in which to rest. She never found it.
    Ketri looked up. A ball of fire roared across the sky, causing the earth to rumble violently. The comet drew closer, close enough that Ketri could feel the heat from its flames. Well... shit. The falling star slammed into the ground, and everything went black.
    ----
    Ketri's eyes snapped open. Still black. As her life was restored, she let out a painful cough to release the ash in her throat. Her eyes adjusted to the darkness, and the first thing she saw was the man standing in front of her. Something seemed... off about him, she decided. But that didn't matter now. How was she still alive? She examined herself for cuts and bruises, but found only the dirt and ash of the destroyed city. Everything had been demolished from the impact of the falling star, including all of the merry partygoers. She recognized some of the corpse's faces from the celebration not hours ago.
    A small, worried voice spoke up. "Ketri, are you alright?"
    Ketri coughed. "Yeah, I'm fi-"
    She stopped. Who said that? Her eyes darted around and rested on each person around her. None, not even the mysterious stranger in the center, had spoke. Her gaze then drifted downward to Harkon, who now rested on the city wreckage beneath her. He must've flown back to me when he heard the explosion, the dwarf thought, but she continued to stare at the owl with narrowed eyes.
    "What are you staring at, Ketri?" The same voice, clear as crystal and in perfect English, spoken to her from the beak of her avian companion.
    Ketri screamed and scrambled backwards. "Did... did you just..." The words escaped her.
    Harkon's expression seemed equally shocked, as much as a bird can look. "You... can understand me?" His head cocked to the side and he walked closer to Ketri, who was too stunned to move any further. "Well, this is certainly curious. Maybe that man over there has something to do with this."
    Ketri was still too stupefied to listen to anything Harkon had to say. Just the fact that he was saying it was ridiculous enough. Okay, calm down Ketri. You're just delusional, is all. This is just some nightmare. Or maybe that fireball killed you, and this is all just some death vision. She continued to stare wide-eyed at Harkon, who was now more interested in the other figures that surrounded them. Determined to find out what was going on, the dwarf gathered the strength to rise to her feet.
    "Hey, mister!" she shouted, an angry glare directed at the man in the center of the crater. "What the hell is going on here?"
    and dreadfully distinct/against the dark a tall white fountain played
    This was Edward’s favorite time of year. A week of celebrations meant that half the population was drunk or distracted; And the other half, the guards and such, were mostly drunk or distracted as well. Meaning everything Ed wanted was available, he had recently come into a large sum of money and so had a grand time planned. Just had to get a minor task completed.
    Edward stumbled drunkenly down the street. Unfortunately he was sober as a judge, the few he’d had the displeasure of meeting anyway. Simple misdirection was usually the best; People expected to see drunks and so Ed appeared drunk. As he moved any waif nearby would find a coin in its hand and the deliverer lost in the crowd.
    The thief's eyes swept the crowd looking for people and items of interest. As he passed the library a group of students burst from it, a blonde girl caught the thief’s eye before the group scattered. Losing sight of her as he moved Edward wondered why she caught his attention. The elven woman in green would have likely snatched Ed’s attention on any average day. He studied her as she danced and whirled, Ed made a note to head back this way after his task was finished. Edward noticed the crowd parting ahead, and hid a smirk at the cause. The dwarf and deer sounded like a good name for a bar, yet the image had captured the thief’s attention. Like the others Ed’s attention was pulled toward an elven male, before being stolen by an unexpected maiden's kiss. Laughing Edward smiled sadly and made an excuse before slipping away from her.
    Another bit of walking and he finally reached his destination. The thief scrambled up the side of the building and found a comfortable seat on the ledge. Edward could see much of the city spread below him, whilst being hidden from eyes drifting skyward. Drumming his finger impatiently the human watched and listened to the merrymaking below. After the time he was told to wait for had come and gone, as best as he could figure it anyways, Ed climbed to his feet.
    As he did his eyes were pulled to the city limits, like iron filings to a lodestone. Bright dots appeared briefly before fire spread from them in a line. Ed moved around the roof to ensure the lines formed a circle.
    “Well that job was….” The thief started to himself before a flash drew his eyes upwards. He stood stunned at the sight above him, he knew there was no escape especially for him. “That double crossing bi-”
    “PfffffFFFFFFFFFUCK!” The gasp became as Ed scrambled to his feet. He could remember dying, at least the memory of what caused his death stood out in his head. Well that and the helpless realization that he was going to die. And yet here he stood in a blasted hellscape; Except the stars, at least the ones still in the sky, looked identical to the ones he oft stared at while waiting for a patrol to move on. His eyes fell to the only other living being he could see. “That hurt.”
    “You set me up!” Edward barked as his finger stabbed toward the woman.
    “I had no way of knowing you’d be in the city,” The distinctly female voice said. She paced before the thief, still wearing that odd costume. Ed has dealt with many eccentric nobles in his career, but this one took the cake and the 4 course meal preceding it. She wore an odd costume with an ornate antlered headdress and mouthless mask. As she paced the massive antlers shaking in denial the costumes tail seemed to lash in annoyance. “That was your choice.” she finished with a shrug.
    “Yeah well the job was successful.” Ed demanded, “I want the rest of my money.” He’d need it; As he no longer had a home, or familiarity with wherever he’d end up.
    “Alas,” The voice started as the others shoulders slumped and hands spread at a loss. “There has been a hiccup.”
    “Not my problem.” Edward stated, “My job was to watch and inform you of success or fail. The crater says they succeeded. Pay me.”
    The costumed being straightened and focused its eyes on the thief and for the first time Ed reconsidered his doubt about the entity's claim. “Very well how about a new deal.”
    “No, pay-”
    “You have been paid!” The voice bellowed and the others stance felt hostile to Edward. “Your life instead of silver.” Edward couldn't deny that he had died. Kinda hard for a star to miss a target as small as him. The rune covered female shrugged disarmingly, “Follow the hiccup. Interfere with their plans and you will gain more than we originally agreed.”
    Ed stared at the outstretched hand that came with the deal, he was becoming more uncomfortable in dealing with this apparent nutjob. And so he went to slap the hand away, “No de-” His words ended abruptly as his hand passed through hers.
    “Consider it a signing gift.” The voice said sounding pleased. Edward started to wonder if there really was a voice. The being circled the thief as he stared at his hands. Her hands began to rub his shoulders. “Imagine everything you could steal, all while never worrying about container locks again. Imagine all the pockets you could pick without every being felt. You will be known as the greatest thief who ever lived.”
    Edward could picture exactly what the words described, and found himself filling with excitement at the idea. Or maybe it’s touch is causing that, a little oft ignored voice from the back of Ed’s mind screamed at him. Still the idea was solid, and if this was a gift what would the final payment be?
    Taking a step forward the thief turned and faced the demon. Yes, he had finally admitted to himself what it was. Between his not being dead any longer and his ‘gift,’ Ed could no longer deny it. “Alright,” He extended his incorporeal hand towards her. “We have a deal.”
    Ed could feel pleasure emanate from the creature as she took his hand. It was shoved aside as the knowledge on how to use his gift was passed to him. As well as the images if the heroes he would need to tail. Interesting; the thief thought to himself as the demon departed, leaving him to get ready.
    "Hush young one." He said in response to the dwarf as he finally removed his hand from the dead elf. He then turned and looked at the dwarf. "What is going on you ask? That is an interesting question and depending on the scope of the question I can not answer. Right now, what it is going on, is that you are speaking to me. Etmere is my name, God of many things. Family, Science, Humans, and many more. I just brought you back to life after I was forced from the immortal realm back down to your realm, the mortal realm." He walked over to the elf who was still alive. He put a hand on her forehead, feeling for any residing effects of death. "Good, it appears the gift of the ancients resides inside of you. I am glad to see that your body accepted the gift and that you still live."
    He then walked to the human who still asleep and put a hand on her forehead, feeling the same residual effects as he did with the elf. "Hmmm the gift has taken to her but she is not yet awake. Awaken ancient, you have a new body and a new friend. You are needed again to fight the evil that brought us here. Now awaken with your new host so that you may join us. It will make explaining this current situation much easier." He then turned and looked at the dwarf with a smile.
    "I can tell that the power of the ancient has already taken to you well. You and your longtime friend can finally speak with each other. It's a shame that I can't understand what it is that your friend is saying anymore." As he spoke he walked to the owl with a smile before crouching down in front of it. "It has been a while since I have been on this realm. I wonder how much of a legacy has been left." He was speaking to the owl instead of the dwarf, figuring if the owl could figure out that what he said was true, the dwarf might believe him easier. He then stood back up and moved back some to look at the three survivors. "I'm sure you have plenty of questions. Please ask away and I shall answer what it is that I can." He then started to look around fully at the crater that was around him.
    "Though, if you can bother waiting, I might suggest that the three of us actually move to somewhere more... well, somewhere that is simply more than this. This place is quite dreary and filled with death and negative energy. I would prefer to at least get out of the crater and into the surrounding forest. Much more natural energy and overall would feel much better to me." He said as he started to sport a more curious look on his face.
    She awoke to the feeling of someone's hand pressed to her forehead and her first thought went to her mother who often woke her up like this. Slowly opening her eyes she realized it wasn't her mother standing above her. It was a man she didn't recognize, looking around she tried to figure out where she was. Everything was dark and burnt. It was then that she remembered the light she had seen in the sky. She jumped to her feet looking around seeing the destruction it looked nothing like her city but everywhere around her she could see fragments of the city. “No! Mother” She shouted, looking around frantically. Kyrie reached out to the man who had woke her grabbing him by the shoulders. She hadn't been paying attention to what he had been say still groggy from waking up and figuring out where she was. “Where is my mother?”
    He turned his attention to the woman who was now awake. Thinking to himself for a moment as he tried to figure out the best way to answer her question. "It is sad for me to have to tell you like this but she is dead. As is everyone who was in and around this village at the time of me..." He stopped talking for a moment as he tried to remember something. "... huh that is weird." He said to himself as he looked to the sky before he continued to speak. "I fell from my realm, the realm of the gods. When I landed here, everything was destroyed and turned to ash. Your mother is included in that. The only reason that the three of you are here currently is that I chose to save you three." He looked back down to the girl and moved his hands to take hers off of his shoulder. "Well, maybe a different wording would be needed than save. Chosen? Yet I didn't really choose you, the ancient heroes did. Your bloodline which has been long forgotten by this world and those who live in it, is the same bloodline as the first heroes."
    Addora stayed on her knees as she watched the dwarf and human rise, consumed by their emotions. Tears silently slipped from her own eyes, down her warm cheeks, but she did nothing to acknowledge them, nor the grief that clenched her chest. Too much shouting. The elf bowed her head, chin to her chest and gave it a little shake. It was too much in the ear-splitting silence that surrounded them.
    She watched them converse with idle gaze, calming the storm within her and trying to arrange her thoughts and make sense of what had happened. The man’s words lingered in her mind, from when she was beyond the grasp of life as well as moments ago when he suggested they move on from this place of destruction.
    “Where would you have us go?” Her voice was little more than a whisper, but her eyes found Etmere and held him.
    The god then turned his head to the next question and looked to her eyes as she spoke. "When I fell from the heavens, my power shattered and spread out across the world. Ultimately, if we are to defeat the evil in the world, we are going to need to gather the power that split off from me, and return it so that I can be at full power again. For now though, we're gonna need to go somewhere else to gather our senses." He looked to the stars and thought for a moment. "We're in the human kingdom. There is a town to the west about a week by foot travel. In that town there is a temple to the gods. If the three of you can get me to the temple, not only will I be able to answer every question you have, but I'll also be able to show you what happened and show you exactly why you were chosen." After he finished speaking he fell to one knee and started to cough out blood.
    He stared at the ground for a moment before wiping his mouth with his arm to get rid of the blood that may have stayed on him. He then stood back up. "It appears bringing you three back to life used a lot more magic than we originally thought it would. More time must have passed between the previous age and the current age than we initially thought." He shook his head and backed up so that he could look at all three of them. "If you have more questions I ask that you ask them quickly. The sooner we get moving the better it will be for all of us."
