He smiled when she went into him. When she backed away he looked to her with a warm smile as he listened to her question. He thought back on the ritual and when he first learned it. "It's called The Ritual of Identification. It goes back to the first generation of chosen. That is what we call ourselves. Humanity calls us the marked. We call ourselves the Chosen and those who do not have marks, the unchosen. Anyways, since the beginning, the chosen have gone with this ritual. Unlike what it sounds like, it isn't ominous. Each chosen is either born with the marks or has the marks appear on them when other chosen use their powers around them. It has long been debated whether marks appear at birth because we are born with them, or if they appear in those who can use them because other chosen use their gifts as a sort of activator." He shook his head with a smile as he realized he was getting off track.
"Sorry, I'm getting off track. There is a lot of information about who and what we are that is normally taught over the course of one's childhood. We have until we leave. Not a lot of time but it'll have to do. What you need to know for this ritual is that each mark contains essentially, the instructions for your gift. When you use your gift, the mark glows blue. Over time, as you grow as a person and fine tune your gift, your mark changes. For some people, the mark gets smaller, for others, it gets bigger. Then for some, it never changes. Like we change as a person, so does the Mark change to represent who we are." He let go of her hands and move one hand up to his face and pointed to a specific section of his mark around his eye.
"This part represents the power of electricity. It is the part that I was born with. Each part of our mark, while it contains the instructions for how the gift works, it also contains words in them. Almost, like they are their own language. This ritual is basically used to help identify the word or words that the person may have on their body in order to better understand how their power works. The more you understand your power, the better you can train it, and make sure that it doesn't become too dangerous. After all, the number one rule among our people is the preservation of life. Any actions that are taken that can lead to the reduction of life among our people is considered to be the highest offense among our people since we are constantly doing everything we can to survive in a world that is dominated by the unchosen."
