    Default Perfect Strangers[M]{Damonique&Natora}

Rated M for the possibility of everything. Coarse language, sexual themes and content, physical and emotional violence, drug and alcohol use...honestly, I'm not expecting 2/3 of those, but it's better to be free to choose.

    --------------------------------

It was cold a cold January morning. No snow, but there was the sparkle of frost on the hard ground and the bare trees swayed back and forth in a wind the cut to the bone. The run-down transit terminal wasn't much warmer than it was outside, the ancient central heat having long since given up. The only warmth came from steaming breath of the people, mostly families returning home after the holidays, huddled on the benches, clutching their tickets waiting for the next bus. It was already ten minutes late.

Jan didn't sit with them though, nor did he mind the delay, just glad to the be on solid ground for the first time in nearly six hours, and was reclining on a bench by the window, ink-pen in hand, sketchpad propped up on his knees, drawing a bird pecking at a discarded packet of chips in the parking lot, scarfing down crumbs. He might be upset by the careless littering, but at least the bird was getting a meal out of it.

Once the sketch was fleshed out enough that he could finish it on the ride, the blonde youth turning his attention to his own prospects for a meal, setting aside the pad and opening his wallet. He only had $31 in crumpled ones and fives left after buying his one-way ticket west, and decided that food could wait until the next stop. Didn't feel like he could hold anything down anyway.

Finally, there was some commotion as the trundling roar of an aging diesel engine and a thankful commotion from the the waiting passengers as a massive passenger Greyhound bus finally came into view in the distance, in people started collecting their things and stretching their legs, heading for the departure line, where a glassy-eyed and clearly hungover older woman was checking tickets.

The cold air bit at her nose while she looked at the phone in her hand to tell the time. Her fluffy, down jacket was able to keep her body warm and her fleece lined leggings took care of her legs, but her face was still exposed to the ridiculous state of the bus terminal. 10:10am flashed bright on her phone before she turned it off and put it back in her purse, the birthday present her ex had gotten her a few months ago. Out of unbreakable habit, the purse did match the beige of her Uggs that she was wearing. But it didn't matter how warm her body was or if her shoes matched her purse, the bus was 10 minutes late. Did lower forms of transportation have no respect for punctuality?

She stood next to where the line was going to start, eager to be the first one on the bus. She had never travelled this way before, being used to planes where her first class tickets got her extra space and priority seating. As she had asked if there was a way to get that, she had been told to just make sure that she was the first one in line. That was what she planned to do. So there she stood, large, hard outside suitcase standing next to her with a smaller duffel bag on top. Waiting. Impatiently. For the moving contraption that was to take her to freedom.

There was a relieved sigh that escaped her when the woman taking the tickets came to the front of the line. Jasmine didn't even notice that she was hungover. In fact, Jasmine made a point to barely notice she was there. When asked, she showed the woman her ticket and then walked past without a word, pushing her suitcase in front of her. There were enough children around that she didn't want to risk having the bag behind her and having a kid accidentally fall against it or throw up on it or something else equally stupid.

When she got to the bus itself, there was a cheery man standing there who was obviously the driver. He had a sweater on without a jacket on top, obviously still warm from the bus he had just been sitting in. The sweater had the bus company logo on the right where a poppy would go if it was close to Veteran's day. His age showed in his hair and his gut, a life of indulging in substandard food and not going to the gym enough. The bald spot on the top of his head almost shone in the little light coming from the flood lights showing the path to the bus they were supposed to board. When he saw his first passenger, he smiled at her. "Good morning, Miss. I can take your bags for you," he offered.

Jasmine didn't return the smile but took her duffel bag off the top of the suitcase. "Be careful with it. It's heavy and there are a lot of breakables in there. If you break it, I'll make sure to get the bus company to replace it," she said, her words biting almost as much as the frigid air was biting her nose.

Her attitude didn't make the man's smile dwindle in any way. He reached across and took her suitcase, allowing her to take her duffel with her on the upper part of the bus where the seats were. "No worries, Miss. It will all be safe in the bottom here," he said and took the bag from her. He lifted it carefully and put it on the hold in what he deemed to be a safe spot as she walked past him and into the top area of the bus.

No one here would know it but she wasn't normally this rude and angry. Jasmine was nervous and it was leaking itself out in a negative way that was affecting anyone that had the unfortunate chance to be around her. She was doing something new and uncharted for her in her planned out life. The chance for anything to go wrong made her nervous and was taking itself out on anyone near her.

When she got to a pair of seats that she thought were safe and reasonable, she put her duffel down in the aisle seat and sat herself in the window seat. She had seen how many people were supposed to be getting on this bus but she really didn't care. She had asked if she could buy two tickets at the gate so that she wouldn't have to sit next to anyone but they wouldn't let her what with the rush of people they were having. Well, she was making sure that no one was going to sit next to her no matter what.

As the bus finally came to a stop, Jan hoisted his ratty, many-patched backpack over his shoulder walked towards the bus at a leisurely pace, not eager to face the rolling and jostling again, or the endless fallow fields of nothing out the windows, but eventually, it came time to have his ticket punched and join the shuffling mass of passengers in jostling for a seat. The front of the bus was full of families and children, while further to the back there were individuals trying to find some space from the noise of children.

He noted with a sigh that all the window seats were taken, and searched for what prospects there were for a quiet and comfortable ride. There was a businessman, albeit not a good one if he was taking the bus, chatting away on his cell-phone. Definitely not. An older man who wouldn't stop coughing. He didn't feel like catching anything. Pass. And then something interesting caught his eye.

She was pretty...more than pretty, beautiful wouldn't be an overstatement, and in no way looking like she belonged anywhere near cut-rate public transportation. Her clothes was designer and clean, her hair and makeup impeccably done...and her expression was dripping with a vehement distaste for her surroundings, caramel-colored eyes narrowed, straight nose turned up dismissively. Jan cracked a smile and snatched up the seat beside her, dropping his bag heavily in a way that said he wasn't planning on getting back up any time soon.

"Hey there..." He trailed off, cocking his head to the side and brushing long bangs behind his ear to reveal one peering blue-green eye and the many piercings through his right ear, but didn't say anything further and just sat there, examining her. His eyes were impassive, but his lips were pursed as if he was having trouble making them do what he wanted. His voice was very quiet, nearly hoarse, almost impossible to hear over the engine.

After getting herself comfortable, she let her head lean against the window and looked out. Just outside of the bus station was a pair of people hugging good-bye. One was a young girl, her age, obviously going back to school. Her gaudy and overstuffed backpack and suitcase showed that. The other was a father, hugging his daughter as if he was losing the one thing that he valued most. He kept nit-picking over making sure that she had everything she needed and stopped her from leaving twice to get another hug or make sure that the girl had what she needed. He was probably telling her that he loved her and knew she was going to have great success and she was probably telling him that he was just saying that because he was her dad... At least that was the sort of conversation she imagined them having.

Then she felt her bag fall in her lap as someone sat down in the seat next to her that she had specifically been making sure that she could have her own space. With this new, obnoxious creature disrupting her reverie there was no way to make him move, really. When she looked around to see where else he might be able to sit, she realised just how full the bus was. the next two people that were looking for seats seemed much less desirable than this undesirable partner.

She managed to keep her sigh of frustration somewhat controlled before tucking her duffel bag under the seat in front of her. If he took the time to look he might notice that the initials J.D. were embroidered prettily on the side. Either way, once the bag was tucked under the seat in front of her she was in, the initials were hidden. "Hey," she muttered grudgingly. Her tone shared how irritated she was with the idea of having a partner sitting next to her.

Who was this cowboy that thought he could completely ignore the signals she had successfully sent to every other person on this bus? Patched up pants, a worn out jacket, he looked like he fit right in on this type of transportation. She was well aware that she stood out here but it was the only way that she wouldn't be tracked as easily. She sat back up and got herself comfy again. Looking out the window, the father daughter pair that she had been watching had separated and her daydream was lost. "Getting off soon?" she asked hopefully.

Jan watched the stranger with an impassive expression that didn't tell anything. He had to admit that she was the first truly different thing he had seen on the outside, a rich girl riding the bus for the first time, and quite unhappy about it, trying and failing to hide that fact.It was clear that whoever she was, this girl wasn't after pleasant conversation. Or conversation of any sort, which meant he just had to give her some.

"Nope, headed for the end of the line. Plan on stepping off the bus onto the beach. You?" He asked, voice starting off as weak as before, but gaining at least a little volume as the words came out. While he waited for her answer, he folded open his sketchpad back to the drawing of the bird and began detailing feathers, no longer even looking at her.

It was easier that way, not having to face the judgement in her eyes. Jan knew he sounded rough and looked rougher. His appearance spoke of poverty then some, and most people had one of two reactions to that, either disdain or pity. He wasn't sure which he hated to see more.

Jasmine heard his answer and groaned an inward sigh at the news. Well she wouldn't be able to ditch the seat partner if he was staying on until the end. At least she would only have to learn how to ignore one person for the time that she was on the bus. Even still. Maybe she could convince him to sit somewhere else once there was more space. Hopefully there would be more room for the last length of the trip at least.

Of course he would ask her a question to keep conversation going. She looked over to him to answer and noticed that he had opened a pad of paper on his lap and started drawing. He didn't even have the balls to look at her as he talked. Maybe his clothing was showing how he was raised, a run down and uncouth area. She shook her head and turned back to face forward, keeping him in the corner of her eye as she answered.

"I'm travelling to the end, ya. How convenient that we found seats together," she said though it was clear she didn't find it convenient at all. Maybe he would find another seat when it came available. Mind, she was still grateful that he didn't stink or seem to want to be involved with her as many others did. "Going back to school?" she asked doubtfully. Of course she knew of students that were on scholarship deals as it was pretty clear that he wouldn't be paying for his own.

Well, they had something in common, anyway. Last stop, L.A. California. Jan was already inventing stories in his head as to who she was, why she was going there. His best guess was wannabe actress with big dreams of Hollywood...and honestly, even from just a glance, he couldn't deny that she could probably make it. And if it didn't work out, she could always run home to daddy.

Her words brought him back from these musings. College...that was an idea, but not in his cards. Not anymore. Though, looking down at his sketchpad, he supposed it was a worthwhile guess. If there was anything he could pass for besides a street rat, it was an art student. After considering lying for a moment just to make her maybe reconsider her first impression, he shook his head, causing those loose bangs to fall over his eyes again to be brushed away.

"Nope, don't need academia diluting my unique style." He answered with a smirk, gesturing towards the sketchbook with his pen and leaving 'couldn't afford it' unsaid. Mostly, he was just surprised that she was even deigning to continue the conversation at all. There were people who tried to make friends with strangers, but neither of them seemed much the type. Still...

"I'm Jan, by the way. I think we have the same initials." He remarked, almost out of nowhere, turning the pen to point out the monogram on the front of her bag. There were a lot of J.D.'s out in the world, but it was still an interesting piece of synchronicity for two of them to wind up seated together. He pressed the pen against a free corner of the page with the bird drawing and wrote the the letters, and then flipped the pad over to write them again, overlapping the others, forming something resembling two circles almost joined before flipping it back upright.

Or improving it, she rudely thought to herself as he mentioned that he didn't want education to 'dilute his style'. That was ridiculous. She was going to school to improve her style. Why would she even fathom the thought that it might dilute it. In order to get better at what she wanted to do forever, she had to go and learn the things that more intelligent people than her already knew. He was either lying or an idiot to think that school couldn't improve what he did.

Out of the corner of her eye she noticed him gesture to his sketchbook. She humoured him and looked over at the book there. It's true that his talent was certainly there. But a pen and paper? If that was the limitations of his artwork, he wouldn't be able to make it very far. That was where academia could help! But what did she know? Her parents had wanted her to stay and just become a trophy wife.

Finally the jarring motion of the bus going into reverse began. "Jasmine," she answered in response to him sharing his name. She didn't bother acknowledging his mention of their initials as they went, her eyes now distracted with the people outside. With all great graces, there would be no one she recognized there to try and stop the bus. She hadn't told anyone where she was going and she had taken a cab, paying them to say she was getting dropped off at the airport. Her family wouldn't understand. They just wouldn't get it. As her eyes scanned the crowd of family waiting to wave good-bye she did notice the dad that had been hugging her daughter but she did not see anyone related to her.

Feeling a little more relaxed now, she let out a small sigh of relief and relaxed into the chair she was seated in. She had been so tense. Now, though, they were travelling, on the road and going to California where the rest of her life waited for her. With all of the tension leaving, Jasmine couldn't help but feel a bit tired. She turned her head so that she was looking at Jan's sketch and noticed the initials in the corners. Two sets and touching. She let out a small laugh and smirked. "Don't get too cocky. We just met," she teased, letting the meanness go as she closed her eyes.

Jan noticed the girl tense up and look around as the bus left the station, but didn't know what to think of it. Probably nervous, leaving home at all, not to mention being surrounding by the 'underclass' as he was convinced she saw the rest of them.

Or maybe it was something else, that she thought someone might be looking for her as well. For all he knew, she shared his unique 'situation'. But unlike with him, someone might actually care, the state wouldn't mind him becoming someone elses problem to deal with. Whatever she was worried about didn't seem to come to pass, as the bus backed out and started down the empty four-lane, and she relaxed considerably.

"Jasmine, like the spice, or the princess??" He stated, not bothering to adress her second point, and least not in words. Instead, he just sketched a rough heart around the initials, and then bisected it with a crack, though his smirk and the way he rolled his eyes showed how heartbroken he really was. Just everything about Jasmine screamed 'move on, outta your league'.

"The princess," she answered, keeping her eyes closed through the process. The bus was driving over plenty of rocks and the like that were spread to keep vehicles on the road. The result was a calming vibrating that was helping to lull her into sleep. "My parents were obsessed with Disney. It was that or Belle," she said with a small smirk. She hadn't noticed his heart and heartbreak over the initials as she had decided to try and sleep. The tense feeling having left her, she could finally close her eyes for a bit.

Last night she would have been lucky to get more than two hours of sleep and her makeup was the only thing hiding the bags under her eyes. It had been almost impossible to get to sleep with all of the worrying that she was doing. What if her alarm didn't go off to wake her up? What if her parents noticed that she hadn't been going through as many clothes so that she could save them for a while? What if they had gotten a notification that her credit card was used? What if they heard her alarm go off when she got up? There were so many dangers of being caught that she hadn't been able to sleep.

"Gonna let me sleep or do you have more questions about our initials and my name?" she asked with a smirk on her face though her eyes stayed closed.
