The imperium would rather you not. We're here to reclaim territory, not render them useless to the wider imperium. Hence why they sent the guard and not the Black Templars.

tbf, the only constant destruction was rail lines and telegraph lines, everything else was if people in the area resisted. southern towns who didn't waylay the union forces were passed over

    That would depend on context.

Our action on Baraspine is essentially in a shock assault with the combined might of the Imperial crusade. We’re already on the Patriot’s turf and inflicting a hell of a lot of infrastructure – civilian and military - damage (orbital bombardment, and the mass deployment of aerial and artillery assets will do that) being done, and with this being a Hive - a hell of a lot of civilians are caught in this, so their morale is already being degraded.

Baraspine’s fall is forgone conclusion. Our objective is to make it reality.

Sherman’s March was taking place several years into a war of attrition (which everyone really wanted to be concluded) and was only possible after the Union was in a position to actually be able to force an army behind enemy lines – and even that was possible with some bad luck / misjudgment from the regional Confederate commanders about what Sherman’s intentions were, and essentially aided his effort by moving forces towards Union held territory to draw him into battle.

Now how would the Legion react?

If it’s within orders (I suggest you take a close look at Sherman’s Special Field Orders No. 120 on how his army was supposed to comport themselves on the campaign) as a targeted, military stratagem to break open a lingering or stalemated campaign? The Legion may not like it – but they would most likely like a continuing war of attrition any less.

And, to stress the point, only so long as the militia was acting under orders.

If it’s the militia taking the initiativeto engage in economic and psychological warfare against civilians – whether or not the Patriots have been militarily checked or defeated? That’ll be an issue, and one which’ll see the Legion shooting your militia as if they were common brigands and deserters looting.

So, once again, I do advise you to consider your decision before you take it.

I would agree with this, and so does the narrative.

The Imperial counterattack was so quickly raised (matter of months, rather than years / decades / centuries) was that the local sector has been adversely impacted by the loss of trade with the Nebula, and they want it back as an Imperial province able to trade as quickly as possible – most likely with some serious reparations included in the new agreements – and to that end have probably raised a significant number of regiments for the reclamation crusade.

For what it's worth, I've been taking them seriously and already have reactions poised.

I can assure you that you won't like them.

If it's only what if's, going ahead, can you to explicitly mention it's only what if's?

Speaking for myself, I'd rather know that I don't actively need to contingency plan if I don't need to.

Well, that's how Merle's time since we've last seen him has gone.

Unfortunately we're going to see more of him.

Gratitude and laurels as always to Az for his hard work in carrying this one over the line*.
