Background: Jarguff was born the 5th Son of Kannack, Jarl of the Southern Firestone Hold. He was born in the middle of winter, and was given the name, as he seemed like a piece of coal fresh from the embers. He spent the very young years of his life being taught the family arts and secrets to magic and smithing. He never came to grasp the full weight of his family title until his first time out into the public alone. While none seemed to dislike him, Jarguff could tell they didn't care much for him, their formality a stark contrast to his regular family.
This became even more apparent to him when he began working in the family forge. Any work he did was contributed to his family name, the most common saying being 'another fine Blazemane piece'. It bothered him that his work was nothing more than the family legacy than his own efforts into it. This put a sour taste in his mouth. Work and study became more tedious and a doldrum for the young dwarf, as all his work had just his family name tied to it.
Jarguff didn't feel truly inspired again until later in his life, when working in his family mine that he started working his own tunnel. He enjoyed the physical strain of starting his own branch of the family mine, but what truly filled him with joy was stumbling upon a massive vein of copper. The joy Jarguff felt at finding the vein, the hard work and effort to uncover the vein was like nothing he had felt in a long while. It struck him then that living under his family name would allow him little feeling like this. He knew that to feel this joy again, he would need to strike out on his own.
With his goal in mind, Jarguff threw himself into his studies and work, wanting to learn everything he could about his family's trade and secrets. His drive to make it on his own kept him moving, not wanting to slide into the doldrums of living under a family title.
Eventually Jarguff had earned the title of master blacksmith. Once the ceremony was complete, he spoke with his mother about his plans to leave the hold and strike it out on his own, under his own name. He told her that he was going to leave, with or without her blessing to find his own home and make his own name, not under a legacy of his family. Amused by his boldness and stubbornness, she agreed to let him go, on the grounds that he couldn't return until he had made a name for himself.
Other:
"Do you really need to leave, Jar?" A tinny voice asked from his doorway. Pausing in the midst of packing, he turned to see his little sister standing there, freshly scrubbed clean. He smiled at her and motioned her in, continuing to pack up his belongings. She hustled in, the bangles in her hair clacking together. She slid up to him, resting her head on his arm to stall him.
"Ya heard Mum, can't come back til I make a name. Not gonna do that here." Jarguff spoke to his sister, musing her hair and making more noise. She huffed and pushed his hand away, pouting some while trying to hide a smile. Jarguff returned the smile.
"Ya can make a name here, several of the forges are looking for new smiths, and your legacy would easily make the cut from them all. I'm plenty sure Garroth or Heimel would offer you a spot as well." She spoke to him, a bit of sadness in her eyes. Even with years of age between them, they were closer than most of the siblings, Serida being the youngest child. Jarguff let out a sigh and paused in his packing, looking down at the pouch in front of him.
"That there's the problem. It would be my family name making a spot for me. Even more I would just be following in the family line. I want something I can truly claim as my own, under my own name and effort. I'll just be another Blazemane legacy. I want a Jarguff legacy." He spoke in somber tones, finishing up the task of packing and tying the pouch shut. His sister looked downtrodden but still held a smile for him.
"You will come back though yes?" She asked him hopefully.
"Of course. I'm Jarguff, I'll have a name for myself in no time at all. Now, I must be off." Jarguff spoke, joy entering his voice before sliding the pouch onto his back. He pulled his sister into a tight hug before the two left his room, one to leave it behind for now.
