Rated [M] to account for mature material in future updates
-incomplete, always updating-
Project Prometheus is the working title of a fantasy-fiction writing project that has existed in my head for well over four years now. My memory is notoriously unreliable, so it’s safe to assume that I’ve forgotten much of the original ideas I had for this project. Since I’ve recently decided that it’s about time I got it written down in some fashion before it all leaks out of my head to make room for random film trivia, and since I find RPA’s forum structure familiar and easy to access (and because I’m not paying for Microsoft Word), this thread will be the unofficially official place for all information pertaining to the development of Project Prometheus.
Feel free to have a read through what I’ve got, which will be updated as I come up with new details and ideas, or remember old ones. Criticism, especially the really mean kind, is welcomed. Just keep in mind that this is an idea I’ve been toying with for a while now, it’s all organised something like a fifth dimensional spider’s web in my head, so it’s not likely to translate very prettily and concisely into words.
Expect sloppy writing. Expect contradictory information. Expect a maze of spoiler windows. Expect long breaks between updates. Above all, expect nothing. I don’t expect this project to go anywhere, either as a roleplay or, god forbid, as a published work, but I have to get it out of my head and into writing before I die.
Spoiler: The First Idea
Years ago I ran what could very loosely be called a DnD campaign. In actuality it was little more than a roleplay with the odd bit of rice rolling. It took place on a fictional continent rife with the usual tropes of swords and sorcery, and was intended to be a silly romp through a hastily thrown together save-the-world plot. Of course, it didn’t stay that way for long, and by the end of the tale I had players telling me how emotional the ending was, and how one of them had even shed a tear.
From the halfway point of the campaign I had already fantasised about the idea (as anyone who has ever managed a roleplay has) of adapting this garbled mess of memes and nonsense into an actual cohesive plot. Once it was over, and I found myself wanting to keep exploring this world I had created, the urge to write it all down really gained traction. But this is me we’re talking about, so that was ten months ago at the time of writing.
Now that the introductions are out of the way, from this point on this thread will consist entirely of the plain facts of Project Prometheus. It will be a source of consolidated information, a rough fact sheet that I can refer back to while developing the project itself. This will be spread across four main sections, which will each have their own subsections. These sections are:
The World
An introduction to the setting of this tale. This section charts out the geography of the world and introduces the many civilisations and their settlements.
Life
Humans are only one small part of the world’s diverse ecosystem. This section introduces the intelligent races and many varying creatures that populate the land.
History
There is a great deal that happened before the first chapter of this story. This section concerns the timeline of important events that shaped the world.
Characters
Every story has its players. This section is made up of the characters, both major and minor, who play a part in the grand design.
Spoiler: A Brief Introduction
The general idea behind Project Prometheus is that of a fantasy world where the world-ending cataclysm has already been (mostly) averted. Frodo and Sam have already dropped the ring into the fires of Mount Doom, you could say.
Hundreds of years ago, there was [I]that[/] War with a capital W, that ravaged everything and ended with the shakiest truce. Then, just a few decades ago, there was that whole business with the evil cult threatening the world. The bold party of heroes put a stop to that, not without sacrifices, and now there’s some form of peace. The world was saved, but could never fully recover.
The elves? Extinct, wiped out by the War. The dwarves? Secluded underground, their numbers dwindled. The humans? Better than ever, but they’re not feeling too good about what they had to do to stay on top.
That’s where our story starts: a generation after all that, in a time where the youth are learning about it all in history books.
