Default Valkyries: Warpath (Koti X P.K.) Rated M (IC)

“Ya sure yer okay here? Funerals in a few?” THe bartender asked the man before him, polishing the last of his glassware as he waited on the young man. Light fog clung to the ground outside, casting wisps across the ground as the sun began its climb. Rays of light danced around the islands homes, shadows dancing in the fog as an immeasurable silence held them in peace. Even the sounds of children in the streets playing was muted behind dusty windows and the heavy oak door in the bar.

“S’not like it matters. No one’s gunna show.” Nate bemoaned to the barkeep, taking another pained swig of the whiskey before him. While most would balk at drinking when not even the sun has broken the horizon, none dared to really stop the young man before. Thankfully none of the other members were currently on the island, save Sullivan who was preparing the body for the rites of the Valkyries. He himself had taken the time off to see the funeral, but the missions were too important to the members to return in time for it. All that was left was to see the old badger off and see the box lowered into the ground, a mundane end to a great man.

“Ya know, he never once called me son, not once. It was either Nate, hellion, or brat.” Nate groaned to the barkeep, glad that the man kept the troubles of those he served quiet. Not even he could pry info from the man on anything. Resting his head on the cool bar, he let out a sigh, wondering where Bella was at this time. Even the comfort of her being there could have made this a bit more tolerable.

“Never even got a chance to call him father. Always boss, sir, or Connor. I mean, what kind of relationship is that for a father and son to have? Instead of playing catch like normal people, we played how to take a bullet. Instead of advice on dating a girl or puberty, he trained me to field dress wounds or how to skin an animal. Seriously, we had a messed up family…” Nate groaned to the man, sipping the drink again and watching the ice cubes swirl around in the amber liquid.

“Sure ‘e was an oddball, but ‘e trained you the best ‘e could. Connor was born and bread a soldier, and wanted ta make sure ye couldf protect yerself. Maybe it was ‘is way o’ bonding?” The barkeep spoke, the Celtic drawl bringing that heavy charm to his words. Nate glared at him, eyes half lidded from the heavy bags under his eyes.

“Yeah, what a way. ‘Here son, this is what it feels like ta get shot.’ or ‘You know that cute bunny we just shot in the eye? You’re gonna skin it and cook it up in a stew’.” Nate mocked his old man before resting back down on the bar. The whiskey had lost its appeal and he didn’t want to get too drunk. He needed to at least make a showing at the event. Keep Sullivan company at the funeral.

“Wake me in about an hour.” Nate offered up the barkeep as he slid a 50 across the bar. The old man just shook his head and dropped the bill into the register and went back to cleaning. He knew the boy was going through a hard patch now, so the least he could do was let the boy get some sleep in. Besides, he had already sent along a message to Sullivan of the boys whereabouts incase he was worried.

Bella ran her hand along the shoulders of the deer as she slid from its back and stepped up to the banks looking out across the water. Behind the deer made its way back to the wilds, back to its waiting Kin that stood at the edge of forest behind her. She was almost home, she recognized these waters and the scent that carried over them. Home was just beyond, Nathan, Connor and the rest of the Valkyries. The Druids had taught her all they could But there was more for her to explore, more they weren't willing to teach her or perhaps didn't think she should delve into. The wilds were her home but so two was the urban nature of the island.

She thought back on everything she'd been taught by the druids, and how it clashed with the operation she'd been on years ago. But she'd come to understand that sometimes when fighting against something evil, utalising the darkness inside of yourself was necessary. Even with this her respect for nature was immense and she would never willingly destroy it for her gain, however. Whatever fight she found herself in was natures fight to.

Bella took in a deep breath before willing her body to shift into the wings of an eagle, a regal bird she'd run into during her travels back home. With its powerful wings she took to the air and with each wing beat drew closer to the Island she could recall childhood memories of. Her time as a feral was distant and though she remembered them she couldn't pick out details any longer. Most of what she remembered was running a muck through the halls with Nathan hot on her heals, causing trouble for the Orc and ridding around on F.B.'s back. All distant memories. Most of all she remembered Nathan and wondered if he two had grown taller.

It took a few hours by wings to cross the waters, and then to navigate over the forest until she could finely see the town and the base. She let out a cry as she servayed the people, some she recognized, some were unfamiliar. she wheeled around in the air cocking her head to decide where to land. She could make out sullivan and someone else in the graveyard. a place she'd explored once or twice. But at least one of them was a familier face. She descended away from the yard and landed beyond a few trees as she shifted back into her human appearance. The smell of freshly turned and damp earth was strong in this area. Druid rituals of honoring the dead were different then that of other people and she was curious to know what these two were doing here with in the yard of graves.

She stepped up beside the trees to peer out at the empty hole. She took in a deep breath letting the scents and smells wash over her tongue like the large cats of the wild. The air was warmer here then it was in Canada though still crisp in the mornings in some places, but not here, not today. the casket still rested beside the grave ready to be lowered down by two other men she wasn't overly familier with but their scents were vaguely familier. Sullivan's stood out and so did another... Nathans. She eyed the other man but remained aloof. rituals were touchy and she didn't wish to intrude.

Nate ended up sleeping on the bar for a good two hours before the keep roused the young man. It was with a heavy sigh that he sent him off to clean up before the funeral. He took the long route home before being confronted by Sigrid, who was upon him like a mother hawk and already bustling him towards the showers to clean up. She held off berating him for the scent of alcohol lingering around him and just went to make sure that he had a proper attire for the event. While she would be attending later herself, Sigrid was needed elsewhere at the moment.

"Not that it matters much. Connors not gonna hear any last words." Nate grumbled into the shower head as he took a cold shower to wake up and push off the last dregs of the whiskey. He followed her orders robotically, allowing himself to be dressed in a clean black suit and shaved where needed. She hovered over him as long as would allow before the team signals needing her Intel. Sigrid promised that she would be there before they lowered the coffin but he didn't plan to hold his breath.

"Any last words Nate?" Sullivan asked the boy, new wrinkles splattering his face as he looked to his friends child. Their relationship had been an odd one, and tennagedom hadn't helped the growing rift between them. Even now Connors death had only widen the gap, even though he could tell the boy was hurting inside. If there was one legacy that Connor had managed to leave behind, it was the rocky exterior of letting no emotion show weakness. Looking upon the boy now he could see the lingering shadow of his friend residing in the young man. Right now it only brought pain as the boy held back his emotions.

"It's okay to grieve for your fa-"

"He was the leader. A great man we lost, but nothing more. We move on to the next mission, that's all." Nate interrupted Sullivan, harsh words burying a heavy heavy heart as he finally pulled his eyes off the coffin, glancing off into the forest, and to eyes he hadn't seen in a very long time. Even if the form had changed, the eyes never lied, and hers he could never forget.

"Bella?" Nate asked, hoping she was real, not another of a drunken illusion to torment his mind again.

Bella cocked her head slightly as Nathan looked in her direction. He'd grown much like she had but as he looked into her eyes she stared back and knew just as he did. Her childhood friend looked different, older but harder. the air seemed thick with a heavy feeling. Bella breathing in the air. sorrow? She glanced at the casket with a wry glance. Had she arrived at a bad time? She pushed away from the tree line and made her way over to Nathan and Sullivan with a straight back and flowing strides unlike her looping gate on all fours when she was a child. She gave the elder man a nod of greeting. "Sullivan." Her voice was quite but thick when she was younger she couldn't even say the man's full name. So much had changed even he looked older and more wry.

She turned her eyes to Nathan as she studied his features more up close. "Nathan." She breathed in softly He'd washed recently but she could still smell the faint bitter smell of booz on his breath as she peered up at him. She was confused why would he drink such awful smelling stuff? Even with his hard exterior she could see he was holding something in. She moved closer, reaching up gently to take his face in her hands and pushed herself to her tippy toes to touch her forehead whit his as a much more intimate greeting. "Missed you." She said quietly, evidently still struggling with speech but still much improved.

She went back to her flat foot and peered up at him with more of a look of concern this time. "Not well. Why so.... Sorrow?" She asked glancing at Sullivan and then the casket. Did she want to know which of her family had fallen while she was away? Already she could feel grief, regardless of who it was, known or unknown. she considered this her home and the people in it family.

Nate couldn’t find his tongue as Belle moved towards them, her looping gait now replaced by an airy stride, her back straight and strong. The years had been kind to her, turning her from the wild child mowgli into an actual person, but her words broke the illusion. Her words came soft and halting still, as though finding her tongue for the first time. Nate couldn’t believe that she had grown so much in the short 6 years they had been gone. Even now, with her struggle for words, she could still convey everything she was trying to tell him.

“Belle i .. I its been so long.” Nate spoke gently, wrapping his arms around her. Nate wanted to tell her so much, talk about everything that had gone on, and just to talk to someone. Even more so someone close to her age. He let his tongue fall silent as he held her, trying to remain strong, yet feeling even now the tears well in his eyes.

“Young Belle, my you’ve grown. I’d hardly recognize you from that wild brat from before. It's good to see you alive and well. I was sure the message I sent would have made it to you a while ago.” Sullivan spoke as he moved over to them, resting a hand on her shoulder as Nate remained silent by her side. He granted her a soft smile before looking to the casket.

“We are here to mourn the loss of Connor, who had passed in the line of duty taking down an occult operation.” Sullivan spoke solemnly, closing his eyes to the casket and allowing a sigh to escape him. Nate glared at the man with a scowl, yet remained silent to the man.

She held him close for a moment as he tried to speak. So much pain in his voice, so much tension in his body. she rubbed his back as he held her sensing he needed the comfort. They would have plenty of time to talk for now Sullivan's voice cut into her concerned thoughts for Nathan. She turned her green eyes on the older man as he spoke nodding to his... complement. However the message he spoke of made her cock her head. His hand was warm on her shoulder as she looked into his eyes following them to the casket.

She was silent but her eyes winded and then narrowed into slits. Connor was in that casket? Bella knew well what loss was but she'd never really experienced it in the way of family. She had had an inkly that it would hurt should sigrid pass, or Claud, F.B.... but she didn't expect it like this. The druids were sad by lose but they didn't mourn like other people did. Bella couldn't feel the same way. She searched the old man's face for a moment before turning them to Nathan now understanding why he smelled of booz and sadness and why the air seemed so solem.

Tears pricked at her eyes to. Connor always seemed a little distant but he'd always been fun to tease, and he always felt safe. It hurt a lot more then she expected, Her feelings not quite so distant to their particular person. She wrapped her arms around Nathan once more. She should have been here sooner for him. "Forgive Bella." she said quietly to Nathan. He had the hard exterior but she knew the softer insides, Connor was a father figure to her but was Nathan's actual father, she couldn't only imagine that the pain she was feeling must be doubled for him.
