As soon as Shara opened her mouth and began to let him know she was ready, he heeled the horse sharply into action without waiting for the command. It lurched forward letting out a startled noise as it galloped forward, they needed to get away from the village without being spotted. They raced out of the town along an empty path for a few minutes before Morgan slowed the horse to a maintainable pace. The beast sucked air, catching it's breath after bolting with the two on it's back.

Morgan silently agreed with Shara; they would concentrated their efforts now that they had spotted him. It would be best to ride through the night.

He let the question hang in the cooling evening air for a few moments. The grasslands around them were gold and pink in the light of the setting sun. It was a lovely sight.

"Not by name..." Was Morgan's flat reply. They didn't know if it was wise to share the story with the stranger. It was an interesting coincidence that they would catch up with them at the same time Shara appeared. Had they known someone promising magical power would flush them out? It was clear he would need to find out a bit more information about Shara. "I am sorry... they will.. want you too now... understand I did not want this..."
Morgans speech was erratic, like they were struggling to find the words they wanted.
"You do not.... have to stay..."

Shara kept her eyes focused on the scenery whilst her new companion rode, urging the horse to carry them towards safety. There was no denying how pretty some of the views really were, as day faded and slowly gave way to night. That was hardly her main purpose, however. Despite her best efforts, though, she caught no sight of any further pursuit. Had they really gotten away so easily? It seemed unlikely, and she dare not get her hopes up. No, better to remain vigilant whilst they had the opportunity.

When Morgan finally spoke up, Shara was silent for a moment as she contemplated her answer. There was no doubt that she would remain if he truly was the prophesised hero. The girl had known that there would be a target on her back, but even so, it was her duty. Yet, they were still to confirm if it was truly him. When she did reply, her tone was soft, almost reverent.

“I don’t mind having a target on my back, but my search has to come first. If you really are the foretold hero, then I’ll stay. If not, then I’ll have no choice but to continue my search elsewhere” she answered, gaze momentarily shifting downwards to the staff laying across her lap. “For now, lets just focus on finding a place to hide out for the night. We can figure out what happens next after that.”

Mercifully, there was no sign of pursuers as the horse plodded along. The pair stood little chance out running them on one horse and a fight didn't bode well either. They continued following the trail as the sun set.
Morgan gave a solemn nod. He was still very interested in this so called test, but they would have to be careful. They continued walking after the sun went down. Morgan raised a hand, open palm up snd muttered a few words and light began to fill the open hand. It was as bright as a torch but the glowing hand didn't seem to put off any heat.

They travelled for a time longer under the stars by the magical light that illuminated the road.
Morgan halted the horse and gestured for Shara to get down. "We stop for now." The sides of the road were slight hills strewn with trees almost tall enough to block out the sky. The magical light from Morgan's hand cast eerie long shadows among them.

After a moment of slightly awkward manoeuvring, Shara finally slipped from the horse’s back. Her dismount was a little bit less than graceful, and accompanied by a small stumble. Her legs immediately began to protest at the rough treatment, and Shara took a few small steps, before pausing briefly to stretch. A soft groan slipped past her lips as the pain intensified briefly, but she felt marginally better afterwards. Such was the price to pay for an unexpected evening spent in the saddle, especially when you weren’t used to riding long distances. Once she was done, she turned back to her companion.

“Probably for the best. We might kill the horse if we tried to force him to go on much longer” she answered, smiling wanly despite the situation. Now that their course was set, she turned her attention outward.

“I don’t know about you, but I have a bedroll in my pack. All we really need is a good place to bunk down” she offered. The girl spent a moment staring out into the darkness, as if she could pierce the gloom through sheer strength of will. When it became apparent that giving her eyes time to adjust wasn’t going to be enough to get by, she turned her attention back to the mage good and proper. She took a few casual steps towards the man and his horse, before speaking up again.

“You’ll have to lead the way, with that fancy little light of yours. I’ll bring the horse up behind, if that’s okay with you” she answered, holding out her free hand, so that Morgan might hand over the bridle if he so desired.

Morgan kept a sharp eye on their surroundings, head on a swivel and eyes darting around as if watching things in the gloom, not wanting to be caught off guard as Shara awkwardly dismounted.
Keeping their eyes on the road and hills behind them, Morgan patted the horse's neck with the empty hand and mumbled something soothingly, but the words were lost to the breeze in the grass and sounds of crickets. Morgan deftly swung their legs over the horse, silently dropping to the ground, not showing any signs of fatigue from the abrupt ride.
As Shara approach, Morgan's eyes returned to her for the first time since their escape, lowering the light in his hand to shade Shara's vision. Morgan's eyes scanned the warrior as they had before, still uncertain of the new companion, but her offered the reigns of the horse to her with a small nod.
He looked around the road once more before heading to the left of the road, leaving it for the grassy valley between two hills. Morgan advanced carefully, occasionally glancing back to ensure Shara was following. They walked a few hundred meters before they came to a small outcropping of bushes. Carefully inspecting them, Morgan seemed content and sat down among them.

Shara trailed a few steps behind Morgan as they began their trek off the side of the road, leading the horse out into the undergrowth. Thankfully, it seemed that his horse was docile – or tired- enough to avoid resisting, and it followed her lead placidly. The light cast from Morgan’s hand was passable, even from behind him, but Shara still set a rather cautious pace. One wrong step could lead to the horse turning or breaking an ankle, and that alone would be enough to strand them out here.

It didn’t take long for them to find an outcropping that suited their purposes, and Shara quickly set about tying the horse’s reigns to the sturdiest branch that she could find. When she was done, the girl took a small step back. She eyed her work in silence for a moment, before finally turning away, having judged it sufficient. It would discourage wandering, at the very least, and hopefully that would be enough.

“I dare say that a fire is a bad idea, considering the circumstances. So, I guess we’ll be roughing it tonight” Shara offered, her tone conversational. She scanned their surroundings briefly, before picking out a mostly-clear patch of ground that would suit her purposes. The girl set down both her staff and her pack, before kneeling down and beginning the process of laying out her bedroll. When she was done, she directed her attention back to the mage once more.

“Best dim that light, lest someone spot us from the road” she started simply, before turning her attention to her bags once more. “Do you have any sort of supplies with you? I’ve got some hard rations, but I had only planned on feeding myself. There’s enough here to feed two people, but not for any extended period of time. We’ll need to make for the next town soon, if you don’t have any of your own hidden away.”

Hardly the most pressing matter they might discuss, given the unspoken weight that currently rested between them. Shara did her best to hide it, but she was a tad nervous. What if she gave him the staff, and it turned out he wasn't the hero? Or, potentially even worse, what if he was, and she misunderstood a lack of reaction to mean it wasn't him, and they went their separate ways? Food and similar arrangements were a topic worth considering in their own right, but also a way for her to forestall a potential disappointment, or mistake.

Morgan watched Shara fuss with the horse's reins, holding the light in their lap as they rested cross legged on the ground. They offered a slight nod in agreement at not building a fire, it would be a cool evening but bearable. Eyeing Shara as she put down her equipment and laid out her bedroll Morgan carefully scrutinized her for any signs of treachery. When the warrior looked back to Morgan they were absentmindedly picking at a small piece of bread, chewing the stale crust.
Shara's words seemed to snap Morgan out of their train of thought as his eyes came back into focus. He spoke once more, his voice more delicate than before, the gruffness gone from it, but the odd cadence remained.
    "T-thank you.. I will.... be-fine."
Morgan wasn't worried about hunger, cold or exhaustion, they had become trusted companions; their mind buzzed with questions. How did the lord's men find him? How far behind were they? Was Shara genuine or did she has some other goal?
Morgan could see the conflict in Shara, it didn't seem as if the warrior was a skilled deceiver, so that boded well.
    "No.... need-to-fret.... trust... yourself..."
Rather abruptly, the light in Morgan's lap went out, suddenly plunging them into the darkness of the evening. The stars sparkled above as the sounds of insects filled the still night air. Morgan was now just a dark blur between the shadows of bush beside them.

The news that her companion had his own rations was welcome, and Shara responded accordingly. Once she was satisfied her bedroll was set up properly, the girl shifted on the spot, so that she was sitting cross-legged. She reached out for the ceremonial staff and proceeded it lay it across her lap, before spending a few moments digging through her bag. After a brief delay she produced a few strips of cured jerky, and proceeded to begin her own modest meal.

She spent a few moments eating silently in the all-encompassing darkness. The food gave her a good excuse to avoid talking for a few moments as she silently dwelled over Morgan’s words, which were a little too close to the mark for comfort. He hadn’t said anything particularly profound, but the accuracy of his statement was a little more perturbing. She had always considered herself a relatively transparent person, but to be read so thoroughly by someone she had just met? Perhaps she needed to guard herself better.

Once she had finished eating, Shara turned her attention to the staff laying across her lap. She spent a few moments staring at it wistfully, her expression unreadable. The girl ran her hands along its length gently for a moment, feeling its carved recesses. She had done this so many times as to know every dip and curve by heart, to remember them as she remembered her own parents’ faces. Shara had always known that it was destined for someone else, but this staff had been her companion for months and miles. And now here she was, on the verge of giving it away for someone else. It was a more difficult thing than she expected. Still, as Morgan had pointed out, there was nothing for it.

She took a deep breath, her hands tightening on it briefly. She gripped the thing so tightly that her knuckles turned white; a fact masked only by the darkness that surrounded them. Then, finally, she spoke.

“Alright then. There’s no point putting it off any longer, I suppose. Ready to find out if you’re really the chosen one?” Shara asked. She held the staff out to him with both hands, ready to hand it over as soon as it was ready.

There was no reply for a moment as the motionless shadow sat at the edge of her vision. Morgan considered the what could happen next. They had no idea what power, if any, the staff held, but surely it would be better to have it at their disposal if they ran into the mercenaries again.

Morgan rose from their sitting position and crept through the darkness, closer to Shara and sat again right in front of her outstretched hands. They peered through the blackness, only able to make out faintly the features of the warrior's face. Morgan nodded and cautiously reached out for the staff.
Shara could feel the staff vibrating in her grasp as the magic within seemed to anticipate it's release. As Morgan's hands wrapped around the centre of the staff, the vibrations Shara felt from it became a burning pain. The wooden staff beamed bright white, cutting the shroud of darkness from the pair's faces revealing the surprise and panic on Morgan's face for an instant before he too began to radiate bright light. Every muscle in Morgan's body tensed as the magic of the staff surged into them. Morgan let out a long scream as the light seemed to be forcing it's way out of their body.
As suddenly as it had began the light dissipated and Morgan fell backward unconscious, hands still clutching the staff. The faint smell of burnt flesh hung in the air. Shara's left palm ache with a dull pain where that staff had left it's mark.
