Backstory:
Having been born in Solitude, the center of Imperial culture and a generally finer lifestyle than the rest of Skyrim, Emily was raised to appreciate the softer sciences. While men went out to protect the city and the wall, Emily's interests drifted more toward the artistic and storytelling pursuits, namely the bard's college. She had a fairly happy childhood, although she never knew her parents. She was raised by a grandmother who loved her dearly, claiming her parents were both soldiers in the Imperial Army who gave their lives in service to the legion.
While she's too embarrassed to sing, she has taken to playing the lute, although she still occasionally struggles with some of the more intricate chord combinations. While not a master of the lute yet, her teacher considered her journeyman enough to set course for Cyrodil to play in a recital there, to get some name recognition for herself and represent the college while doing so.
Unfortunately, having only a small backpack with her lute and a simple quarterstaff strapped to the back of it, Emily is not much of a fighter. She made it almost to Helgen on the back of her beloved horse, Freowyn, when a coven of Hagraven witches ambushed her out of nowhere. The horse took the brunt of their spellcasts, allowing a fear-stricken, charred Emily to narrowly escape. Whether it be having to spend one night on her own, horseless and without her saddlebag supplies, or the shock of contact with offensive Hagraven magic, she contracted rockjoint, a common disease, within the span of a couple of nights.
When Emily arrived on the outskirts of Helgen, a wagon passed by her, carrying Imperial guards and several bound prisoners, one of whom was gagged. Instead of going all the way into town, she stopped at an alchemist's shop right outside the main gates of town to see about getting her rockjoint cured. This is where our story begins.
