John held her tightly. "oh Milly." He murmured. He was terribly upset by the fact that Milly was upset and it seemed like nothing was helping. He was happy that she was willing to be held and talking now. "It'll be okay."

She cried into his shoulder, her little body shaking with her sobs. She didn't want to let go of her brother. She hated that she had lost him. She hated that he was trapped there now. But she didn't think she had it in her to set him free.
He held her and rocked her gently. "Hush, darling. It'll be okay." He murmured. "It'll be okay. Harry will be okay. You will be okay."

Milly didn't respond. She wanted to believe him but she didn't know how.
John fell silent as he held her. He kissed her hair, trying to comfort her with actions and by thinking calm thoughts himself.

Milly was relieved that she didn't feel overwhelmed by his grief now. He was truly being there for her, focused on her, and she could tell. It felt like a weight lifting off her shoulders, which was a welcome feeling after a new one had just been added. She felt like she was responsible for her brother's fate, no matter what her dad said. She had to talk to him, to tell him it was okay to go, and she had to mean it. But going back there was the last thing she wanted. She never wanted to go back. Her sobs still slowed a little and she eventually fell silent, running out of tears.
John gently rocked her as she slowly stopped crying. Once she finally stopped, he kissed her hair again. "Let's get you some water." He stood up and carried her to the kitchen. June was in there, making lunch and she was a little surprised to see Milly but she put on a brave face. "It's good to see you out of your room, Milly." She said as John held Milly with one hand and filled a glass of water with the other.

Milly held onto her dad with one arm around his neck. She used her other hand to wipe her eyes and her nose as she sniffled. She didn't dare to look at her mother, so she kept her eyes on the glass of water. She knew her mother was upset, and not just about Harry. She was upset about David's parents. She'd felt it last night when she'd held her hand.
June frowned when Milly didn't respond. She only wanted Milly to be happy again but with all the changes recently, it didn't seem possible any more. John glanced at June and knew that she was upset that Milly never seemed to respond to her any more. "Milly, drink up your water. Maybe we'll go play on the swings in the backyard. You like doing that, right? Mommy can watch too."

Milly drank half of the glass of water and then just held it to her chest. She felt tension in the kitchen and she didn't like it. She didn't want to go play on the swings at all, but it was a way to get out of there. So she nodded slowly before drinking the rest of the water.
