"Why do they get to keep their jobs?" she asked, appalled.
"Cause no one likes working with a bunch of crazies... no offense. The job is hard. Violent patients... long hours..." He sighed. "They keep their jobs because they know that no one will apply for the open position."

"That can't be legal," she said softly. "There has to be something so somebody can do."
Roger looked at her hopelessly. "I don't know if anyone is willing to do anything. Most of the time the patients are given to us to forget forever."

Her face fell a little. "...That's terrible," she said softly. "I'm willing to do something. Once I'm discharged I'll... I don't know, I'll protest, or something..."
Roger smiled and squeezed her hand. "thank you Maeva. I'll help you with that."

She smiled back. "Something like that shouldn't happen. At all."
He nodded. "You're just preaching to the choir, Maeva. Trust me." He smiled at her genuinely. He was relieved that she was willing to help. So they had to start at zero for their friendship, it didn't bother him anymore. They would have plenty of opportunities to let it grow again.

She grinned and leaned back against the raised head of her bed. "We'll figure it out. I..." Her grin faded. "I don't want to go to a place where people like that work."
