It had been six months since Sola had found the bright silver dragon egg tucked away in the woods behind her small home. While it was still in egg form it was easy to keep hidden, tucked under the blankets on her bed to keep it warm. Then he hatched, a beautiful silver Dragon hat there was no denying was a warrior breed dragon.
It was one thing for her to find a dragon, but the kind of dragon he was was for the elites only. The elites and those that guarded them. If one was found, which was unheard of as all female Warrior Dragons were in captivity and locked away so an egg could not end up in the wrong hands, they were to be turned into the closest governing body. It was said they were too dangerous for the common folk. If not trained right could wipe out villages in a blink of the eye.
But when Ryon hatched and snuggled up to her chest she knew she couldn't give him up. She would never be allowed to keep him if he was found, as she was a woman. Even if she was of Elite blood, only men were allowed to have a Warrior Dragon as only they were able to train and control the Fierce beasts. So as Ryon grew, and tried on multiple occasions to burn her house down, Sola had to move him out to the woods where she had found him. Keep him hidden in one of the caves that she had stumbled upon as a child.
The longer he stayed out there the more concerned she became that he would be found. When she would go out to visit him on a daily basis she would wrap her breast in bandages and pull her hair in a tight bun on her head hiding it under a cap. She always had a sharp knife on her side that she could cut the hair with if she needed to. Though she knew she would never be able to explain to the town folks why she cut her hair. So it was for dire situations only.
As Ryon reached his full size around six months from when he hatched she started to teach him to let her ride on his back. Though there wasn't much teaching involved. From the time he was small he tried to get her to climb onto his back. To take off into the sky with her clinging to his neck for dear life. Though they were getting better at mastering it, she knew it posed a huge risk. She would never be able to keep him from flying, yet flying left them in the open, exposed to be found.
"Ryon!" she called with a grin on her face as she neared his cave carrying a bag full of whole chickens. She knew they would never be enough to feed him, but they were treats that she brought with her. He hunted his own food, though he seemed to know to stay away from the village.
As she neared the entrance of the cave she felt hot air flow down her back making her nearly jump out of her skin as she spun around to see the dragon standing over her. She was never able to figure out how he was so quiet when he moved through the woods. His sheer size should have made it impossible.
"Silly boy, don't sneak up on me like that," she laughed as he lowered his head and pressed it against her. When he was smaller he would press his head to her forehead, but as he grew his head became longer than she was tall. She wrapped her arms around his face as she dropped the bag of chicken and sighed. This was her happy place, she didn't know what she would do if they ever found him and took him away from her. "Are you ready to fly?"
She pulled out one of the chickens and tossed it to him smiling as he caught it in his huge mouth. She gave him the rest of the chickens and went to set the bag in the entrance of the cave when Ryon leaped over her, landing so she was hidden beneath his chest. He had never acted in such a way, but the rumbling roar that left his chest next was enough to tell her something was wrong.
"It's a warrior alright," a voice said as she saw what looked like two dragons land in front of Ryon. She felt her blood run cold as her biggest fear came to life. They had found him. She yanked the knife from her belt and quickly cut the bun feeling her heart jolt as her hand came away with a ball of hair. Her beautiful hair. She shoved the hair in her bag and tucked her now short hair under the cap. She felt Ryon lower a little more as she moved towards his head.
"Looks young, should be easy to lasso," another voice said as she heard one of the dragons in front of Ryon let out a roar of it's own. "Hush, Bray, can't be scaring the thing off. It'll only make this more difficult."
Sola made it to Ryon's head and moved so she would be able to see the two riders and their dragons. The men were in the royal dragon uniform, their dragons adorned with saddles bearing the King's crest. This was worse than she had thought. One of the rider's spotted her as Ryon dropped his head shoving her back under him, nearly making her fall to her butt. He was protecting her.
"What do we have here, looks like it already bonded." The first voice said as she heard Ryon let out a hiss that told her he was getting ready to attack. She had to stop him, he wouldn't stand a chance against the older dragons. "Call off your dragon, boy."
"If you stop being a threat to me he won't attack," she replied forcing her voice to be deeper as she moved back to Ryon's head grabbing one of his horns and pulling his head close to her as she rubbed circles on the side of his face. She felt him relax a little, but just enough to appease her.
"Fiesty, kid. Why didn't you turn this dragon in, do you not know how dangerous keeping it hidden is!" the second rider boomed. His dragon flared it's nostrils causing Ryon's head to jerk up again, she struggled to keep standing as she glared at the man.
"He wouldn't hurt anyone!" she snapped.
"You will be punished for breaking the law!" The rider slid down the neck of his dragon and landed on the ground walking towards her and Ryon. Instantly Ryon blocked her from the man a hiss leaving him.
"Their bonded, Adam, you know that can't be broken," the other rider chimed in. "Remember this beast is not trained."
"If you would back away he will stop hissing at you," Sola called as she moved towards Ryon's head again. She could feel his frustration that she wouldn't stay beneath him where he could protect her. She watched the King's rider move back towards his dragon though she didn't know if it was because of what his partner said or her.
"You have to come with us," the first rider said. "A warrior dragon must be trained at the academy. Can you ride it?"
"Y-Yes," she admitted as Ryon blew out smoke as he nudged at her again.
"Mount up and follow us," the second rider climbed back onto his dragon as she bit her lip. Was she really going to do this? Really going to go to the academy and pretend to be a man. She had to, or she would lose Ryon forever.
