Great! Accepted. Might I add, all these characters are serious and are real sci-fi characters, and the ship is called The Rooty Tooty Lightspeed Shooty.

Sort of reminds me how of the British public voted (and won) a bid to name a research vessel Boaty McBoatface. Too bad the official results were refused, but the RRS Sir David Attenborough is still a mighty fine name. ;P

You could come up with a creative reason as to why the ship is named that, hah.

Sounded like a ship for misfits. Who can tell with aliens? A "Rooty Tooty" could mean a bloody nose. "Lightspeed Shooty" a fast shot. So what you're promising is a sudden bloody nose they're never going to forget. Or a really fast breakfast order with fruit on top.

Shore leave should be fun.

I'm thinking it could mean something very literal, like "Ship that goes fast" but the captain is very eager to learn and work with humans, and settled on that ridiculous name.

Maybe it just translates across badly? The name could be describing concepts that are actually difficult to describe in English without being able to emit complex pheromones into the air or rapid change in colour.

Maybe it's like how the Japanese word Yokai translates to demon in English, but it actually carries a bunch of meaning in Japanese that doesn't translate into English

I'm kinda thinking Van will have a list of things that the ship's name translates to in different languages most of them making much more sense than they do in the human language.

I think of it more like a Trojan Horse, something to make us relax and drop our guard. After all, we're not just crew - were test subjects in an ongoing study of the Human race. Everyone gets to be studied and see how we react to the other crew members and the cultures we come across.

Better stock up on the stun grenades and liquor.
