In a time before living record a species of advanced beings known only as the Ancients built the Stargate network to connect their worlds throughout the Milky Way. These great metallic rings possess the ability to create wormholes to send the user to their destination almost instantaneously, a feat that would not be replicated again. They created humanity in their image and sat on the Alliance of Four Great Races, pledging to protect the lesser races.
Then they left.
Millions of years later humanity has rediscovered the Stargate buried on Earth and started exploring the stars, retracing the footsteps of its creators. This effort has been spearheaded by the Stargate Program under Stargate Command, a top-secret division under the United States Air Force. In the span of seven short years it has combated and destroyed many foes including the Goa'uld, a race of malevolent worm parasites who lorded over displaced human populations as false gods. Their most recent effort under the lead of the flagship team SG-1 revealed the existence of an Ancient outpost beneath the ice of Antarctica. With the battle concluded efforts to study the ruins have revealed the location of Atlantis, the city-ship of the Ancients in the Pegasus galaxy.
Acknowledging the potential value of finding new technology and allies to aid in the defense of humanity against an ever-growing number of threats the SGC has authorized the Atlantis Expedition, a multi-national team of scientists and soldiers. It will be a one-way trip. The vast distance to the Pegasus galaxy demands power on a level only possible with an Ancient Zero-Point Module, or ZPM, of which the SGC has only one. If there is to be any hope for the members of the Atlantis Expedition to ever see home again it would require them to find a way back themselves.
*****
Welcome to Stargate: Atlantis! This is a fanfic RP set in the Stargate universe at the onset of the Atlantis Expedition. With the defeat of the Goa'uld System Lord Anubis humanity has earned itself a brief reprieve from a hostile Milky Way galaxy. In the process it has also discovered a way to reach Atlantis, the city-ship of the Ancients, creators of the Stargate network. Unable to pass up such a rare opportunity to acquire new and powerful technology and even possibly meet living Ancients, Stargate Command has authorized a multi-national expedition to the Pegasus galaxy.
Player characters will be members of the Atlantis Expedition, a mix of (mostly US) military personnel and civilian and military scientists brought into the top-secret Stargate Program from around the world. Military personnel will be assigned to Atlantis-Pegasus (AP) teams sent through the Stargate once in the Pegasus galaxy while scientists will be organized by their areas of knowledge allowing them to engage in research and development as well as accompanying AP teams on their exploration of the Pegasus galaxy to provide assistance on matters outside military expertise. The standing objectives of the Atlantis Expedition is to explore new worlds, procure new technology, and make alliances to protect humanity from any and all dangers.
Their task will not be an easy one. Far from home and cut off from any support the members of the Atlantis Expedition will have to learn to survive on their own. Resources will be limited to what the Expedition can acquire themselves and any trouble it encounters will have to be resolved by the members without external support. Managing weapons and supplies will be as vital as developing new ways to defend against hostile foes. Failure may just mean the death of the Expedition, but it may also mean the destruction of mankind.
If you are not familiar with the Stargate franchise, don't worry. I would be happy to help you navigate the lore. Knowing a lot about Stargate will not be necessary to play this RP and I will keep notes for anyone who is new. Stargate is as much about discovery and development as anything else, after all.

Rules:
- Follow RPA rules
- Please use third-person past tense for all in character posts
- Use assigned text colors to indicate other people's text in your posts
- Quote other posts only for context - do not quote entire posts
- Speech marks are fine for your own character's dialogue
- Please post notes in the OOC if you are taking a break or leaving the RP
Appearance: Pictures and/or written description. Please describe your character in an early IC post as well.
Atlantis-Pegasus Team / Scientist Expertise: AP Teams should have a designation AP-1, AP-2, etc. I will assign them to begin with, so military personnel don't have to worry. Civilian scientists will be assigned to the teams on a per-assignment basis and will typically not have a permanent team (at least on paper - in RP terms they will be heading out with AP personnel quite often). However, each scientist needs to indicate their overall area of scientific expertise and where they stand within the portion of the Expedition that handles that area (i.e. Head of astrophysics). Please note that head of the expedition is reserved for my character and anyone applying for head of the military contingent needs to consult me first.
Skills / Specializations: List general trained skills for your character here that would not be assumed by their role in the Expedition. For example there is no need to put firearms knowledge unless a character is specialized in that field since all military personnel would be expected to be able to handle themselves in a firefight. Military ranks should be noted in the character name and should not rise above major except for whoever I clear as head of the military contingent, which will be a colonel. Non-standard military specializations may include demolitions, marksmanship, medical, etc. and there will be roles like drill instructors, military police, and quartermasters. Most personnel will be drawn from the US Armed Forces and any divergence of that should have a good explanation in the character's history while all histories should include how the character came to be assigned to the Stargate Program. Bear in mind that the SGC would only take the best given the stakes involved both in the Program and in the Expedition in particular as well as the secret nature of the entire operation.
Unlike the original Program, the Expedition will include a large number of civilian personnel drawn from multiple countries, though many will be US-based. Civilians may encompass and overlap with military personnel in the fields of science and medicine. However, the greatest interest in civilian personnel generally revolves around historical knowledge as many of the displaced human populations and alien species encountered by the Stargate Program have exhibited connections to past human civilizations and their mythologies, most notably the Egyptian pantheon, but also including the Norse.
Inventory: Misc. section for non-military items like personnel effects. I encourage creativity with this as it can add significantly to a character's personality (note that there is no personality section as it should be clear and consistent but also emergent in the IC). Clothes may also be noted, though these may change and military personnel may stick to their uniforms. Equipment like weapons or research materials may be noted if the character has specific personal items but generally these would be distributed to personnel on an as-needed basis. For example, most research equipment will be kept in the labs and most weapons will be checked out to personnel by the quartermaster when they go on patrol or are sent on a mission - there's no reason for a character to keep a brick of C4 in their living quarters. Because what a character has on their person will change over time it isn't necessary to amend this section unless the item is lost or destroyed.
Background: Who is this character and how did they come to join the Stargate Program and the Atlantis Expedition in particular? There is no need for a life-story dump in the IC and this does not have to be long, but it should give context to who this person is and how familiar they are with the Program. Bear in mind that all personnel would be extensively briefed before the Expedition and some may even have been pulled from the standing Stargate personnel. Keep in mind that the members of the Expedition know that this could be one-way trip and it would be good to acknowledge why they would be willing to make that journey.

Important NPCs
Spoiler: Expedition Commander
Name: Dr. Adriana West
Age: 44
Appearance: West owes much of her body structure to her paternal African heritage but her complexion stems from her maternal English/Indian roots. Even with this unlikely combination it is her improbable emerald eyes that draws the attention of most people against the background of her more mundane features. In spite of no longer being a soldier West continues to practice physical training.
Atlantis-Pegasus Team / Scientist Expertise: Expedition Commander of the Atlantis Expedition aka "Director".
Skills / Specializations: Laaaawwwwwww! And diplomacy.
Inventory: Various references on law, a JAG uniform, and her Ph.D. certificate.
Background: West was born in a large London family to a USAF father and a British mother. Though things started out stable the situation quickly began to deteriorate after her father was killed while on duty. Under pressure from her paternal relatives West’s mother made the decision to move the family to the suburbs of Chicago. Now living in poverty with her single mother supporting the family West became the de facto head of household, particularly as some of her siblings turned to crime to get by. Confused and cynical of the word with few prospects West finally caught a break when she witnessed a defense attorney successfully get one of her brothers freed from a crime she was certain he did not commit. That day she realized that law and order were important and vowed that she would become a lawyer, bringing law to the lawless and help to the helpless.
Still cynical but now determined West sought out resources only to find that few existed. However, another break presented itself in the form of a Navy recruiter. Though she had never considered a military career the recruiter offered a sympathetic ear and told her about the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. The Navy would fund her higher education at the University of Chicago and then she would enlist, eventually making it to the ranks of the JAG. Not willing to give up the opportunity, West agreed. Life in the Navy proved challenging and she faced academic, physical, and political hardships on her way to the rating of Legalman. The sweetness of her success through extraordinary merit was brief as she found herself blocked by what she was in the US. Even worse, it required the intervention of the recruiter to clear the way forward. From there she ascended to the rank of Lieutenant Commander by sliding down into the mire of politics and nepotism. The final straw came in the form of a botched court marshal that resulted in the conviction of two soldiers for killing a fellow soldier on their corrupt colonel’s orders. With her obligatory time done, a disillusioned West turned in her papers and left.
Despite her abrupt departure, the US military was still obligated to cover part of her education expenses and so she returned to the University of Oregon, eventually earning a Ph.D. in political science. The knife cut both ways though and her plans to settle into a comfortable teaching post there were disrupted as she was called back into service. New political connections and diplomatic experience earned with her Ph.D. made her appealing to a military intent on finding a familiar pair of eyes to look out for its soldiers. West found herself thrust into diplomatic duties amid the closing days of the Cold War and the onset of the conflict in the Gulf. Skillful handling of her assignments during this time and in the wake of the collapse of the USSR allowed West to make a name for herself as a shrewd if somewhat hard-nosed diplomat that got the most for her side no matter the circumstances. These turned out to be just the kind of qualifications a secret arm of the US military was looking for.
As the Stargate Program expanded its reach and contact with various races and civilizations the Tau’ri found themselves in need of more than a military mind. Many of these civilizations proved technologically inferior to the Tau’ri, but the SGC still felt that a greater level of organization was needed, something only a diplomat could arrange. Brought in to facilitate this exchange, West arranged for these allies to provide the SGC with raw materials, information and intelligence, and even the odd piece of advanced technology in exchange for advanced medicines and rapid response support in the event of a Goa’uld attack or natural disaster. Though none of these efforts played a direct role in the success of the Stargate Program, the efforts of West and other diplomats allowed the SGC to take advantage of scientific discoveries and advances.
When the Atlantis Expedition was proposed by Dr. Daniel Jackson of the fabled SG-1 and the powers that be decided that a civilian should lead it, the military determined that there was only one person for the job and pushed for West to be appointed as Expedition Commander of the Atlantis Expedition with almost unseemly prudence. Many, particularly civilians, objected as they saw West as little more than a soldier in a three-piece suit, but the military insisted that she was technically a civilian and few could dispute that she was qualified for the job.
Spoiler: Second in Command of Military Contingent
WIP
Name: Major Ellia Marsh
Age: 39
Appearance: Marsh stands just over a meter and a half, her stocky frame more than making up for her shorter stature. Born to a British father and German mother, Marsh inherited her mother’s blue eyes and her father’s dark brown hair, yielding with her complexion a striking result.
Atlantis-Pegasus Team / Scientist Expertise: Second in Command of Military Contingent
Skills / Specializations: Melee expertise including both armed and hand-to-hand.
Inventory: Holy bible, cross
Background: Marsh was born in Lincolnshire just outside of the eponymous city to a local Briton and an exchange student. Her mother was a Catholic, something that helped to compel the couple to marry young, a fact that Marsh always suspected rankled with her ambitious father. A firm believer in the waning of the Empire, one of her earliest recollections of him was one of his many drunken rages, ranting about the handover of Hong Kong. Growing up under him, Marsh came to despise his sense of superiority over the other people of the world even as he inundated her with tales of the Commonwealth and molded her to ‘take his place’ in remaking it. To that end he sent her to a series of boarding schools and then military academies, separating her from her terrified but caring mother.
Despite its strict nature, Marsh could not help but appreciate the quality of her education. The fading vestiges of the one-time world power still held onto some of the most elite education and highest connections. In time she would be introduced to her mentor, a retired SAS officer who was skeptical of the concept of women in the Special Air Service but indebted to Marsh’s father enough to give her and her fellow academy members an opportunity. Most were disappointments, or at least no more than he expected, but Marsh and a few others convinced him to get the ball rolling on acceptance. It would be a long time coming though so in the meantime she and a few others learned under him parallel to their higher education.
Against her mother’s protests, Marsh’s father pressed her to enlist in the UK military at the onset of the Gulf War. Marsh’s pedigree and skill earned her advancement that belied her lack of official training, resulting in her being added to the forces that found themselves deployed. There she crossed paths with Dr. Adriana West for the first time when she was assigned to escort the diplomat to negotiations, giving Marsh the opportunity to leave and impression on West. After the conflict the two parted ways and Marsh continued to serve in the UK military until 1997.
In mid-July of 1997, Marsh was forcibly recalled from the field by her commanding officers on the grounds that her father had fallen ill, dying shortly after she met with him. Realizing that there was nothing more holding her anymore, Marsh ended her service with the military. Although she was obligated to serve to the end of her contract, her mentor pulled strings up the ranks and she was given a special exception for release. This decision would come back to haunt her. In the meantime, Marsh settled down for a mediocre but peaceful civilian life. Seven years passed until a gentle knock on the front door was made by a uniformed man calling her back to service.
Appearance: She's about 5' 5" and is very slim and fit. Her coccasion skin was lightly tanned, her eyes were light green with soft dark brown hair that went down just past her shoulders which she puts into a ponytail half the time
Team:
Skills / Specializations: Military Psychotherapist, basic first aid, basic survival, French language,
Inventory: Military fatigues, Shorts and T-shirt and shoes, hat and sunglasses, family photo, hygiene products, pen and pencils, notebooks.
Short bio:
Liana grew up on the California coast. Her parents had good jobs and were able to live in relative comfort in a nice beachside house. They had everything that they needed and more.
She grew up with 2 older brothers and 2 older sisters. But she was very kind, and was a good listener. It really seemed to help them to talk about their problems, and she was actually interested in what they were dealing with, and it sort of hurt when they didn’t talk about it, especially when they talked to someone else.
She had a few close friends in school, and they too came to trust her with their problems. She grew bold in asking about problems and for standing up for her friends. She grew curious and decided to ask questions of war veterans on the visits they got on veterans day and decided that she wanted to be able to do something for the men on the front lines. She graduated from college with majors and minors that would help her with Psychotherapist and applied for military service. The first few days of military training was hell and she almost passed out more than once from over exertion, but she pulled through and improved.
She was up in reserves for the first new months after she was accepted, but was later sent to the Afghanistan after 9/11 in mid October of 2001 and was transferred to Iraq in 2003 after a front was opened there and served a total of 4 years in the middle east before being sent back home on extended medical leave on account of a broken arm from a close call with a suicide bomber. during her time in the Middle East, she was able to talk with her fellow soldiers and help them through their stress and anxiety of the battlefield, but needed to talk with someone herself. Her training, personality, and experience allowed her to find common ground and help them through their problems and find closure as well.
In her service, she managed to keep a level head for the most part and kept another squad mate alive until a medic to get to him. She also managed to fend off a small group of terrorists for a few minutes while another squadmate got in contact with base for a pullout. She was awarded the rank of sergeant, a bronze star, a purple heart, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. She managed to keep a smile after her time in the Middle East and was later approached by SGC. she was accepted and volunteered for the Atlantis expedition despite still recovering from her broken arm. She argued that she would be of great use on the team since they would be under great stress in an isolated area, that she needed to get a new look at things, and that she could still shoot in any case.

Following the trend and going minimalist, personality and history can be cone into more in-depth in the IC. She's mostly just the character from the other campaign, with some changes to age and backstory to fit with the point in the timeline we're at.
Name: Amadae Ish'sha
Age:Twenty-something, probably...she doesn't know her precise birth-date, and with decelerated aging, it's hard to tell how old she's supposed to be.
Appearance: A tall, slim young woman with a mix of Caucasian and Arabic features that leave her ethnicity vague. Richly tanned skin, dark green eyes that glow gold when her 'other half' is in control , and long, silky black hair that hangs over a purely decorative golden head-emblem set into her forehead, adorned with the symbol for Pi. While she's never exercised a day in her life, her form is kept in peak condition, toned and muscular, by her symbiote's careful management of her body chemistry.
Atlantis-Pegasus Team / Scientist Expertise: Mathematician, Technology Specialist, and living, breathing Databank.
Skills / Specializations: A natural grasp of higher-order Mathematics, perfect recall, fluency in Ancient and over a dozen other languages, and a familiarity with technology well beyond what the Tau'ri posses. Her Symbiote has centuries of genetic memory that she can draw upon, including certain combat skills that come out in times of extreme stress. She cannot operate gene-locked ancient technology, though,as even if she had ever had the control gene, the Naquadah in her veins and the 'improvements' made to her biochemistry by her symbiote make her no longer read as wholly human.
Inventory: Dozens of notebooks full of tiny, nearly illegible handwriting, her life's work. While it's all in her head, she prefers to keep a physical medium on-hand to record her discoveries and thoughts in real-time. Additionally, she's found the familiar act of writing in a 'diary' of sorts to put her Tau'ri 'friends' more at ease, making her seem more approachable.
Background: A war-orphan rescued from a slave-world that had displeased it's Goa'uld masters, Amadea was relocated to a colony-world housing a mix of displaced peoples, including Tok'ra, Jaffa, and members of the various other peoples freed from oppression, raised by the community, surrounded by diverse influences, including representatives from the new Asgard Alliance that supplied the fledgling community.
Despite her extraordinary IQ, Amadea was a frail child, suffering multiple bouts of various cancers, likely the result of exposure to the dirty weapons that had laid waste to her first home. Eventually, her condition was deteriorating even faster than advanced medical technology could counter, and so the Tok'ra extended her the offer of a symbiote, which she took, bonding her for life with a being that calls itself 'Emnon'. She quickly devoured every scrap of knowledge she could find, and grew interminably bored with the subsistence-level life she and her fellow colonists were living.
Eventually, she began to seek out any visitor she could find from off-world, including the Tau'ri, searching for anything new to do or learn, and after making some 'friends'(some of the more intimate sort than others), managed to convince them to take her pleas to their superiors. That she was smart and resourceful, could be a great asset to their own research. While SGC was reluctant to allow an 'Alien' and relative unknown on their planet, a bit of intercession by the Tok'ra convinced them to allow her to take up residence in the Cheyanne Mountain Complex and to both learn from and teach the best and brightest minds in the Stargate program. Since then, she's been done more teaching than learning, especially in the sort of esoteric mathematics that govern Ancient technology.
Her reputation on Earth varies depending on who you talk to...lots of humans don't trust her, and are downright afraid of Emnon when he comes out to say anything, others see her as a sort of endearing, precocious intern, butting into their work and asking all sorts of questions....while others, the ones who catch her eye, know her as the 'freak in room 3-B, who'll rock your world until she gets bored'.

Damonique and Natora, Joshua and Jessica, over a million words strong and the story goes on and on and on.....
@everyone
Where applicable, please mention what nation your character is from. The Atlantis Expedition is multi-national with (presumably) members from the US, the UK, France, China, Russia, Canada, and the Czechia. Keep in mind that the US has handled the Stargate in secret for two years before Russia became aware and five years before they informed the UK, France, and China. You can explore it more in the IC, but consider how these nations, and by consequence your character, view the US' monopoly on the Stargate and its benefits. Are they angry that the US kept this hazardous secret; envious of its potential; thankful for the US' handling of the situation? As a US member consider how the US views the substantial increase in involvement by foreign nations that the Atlantis Expedition represents. Are they wary because of the potential security risks; uneasy due to the sudden change; satisfied that others are now doing their part?
@Highland Sniper
Notes:
1. Psychotherapy requires a lot of character to character interaction, particularly considering what the Atlantis Expedition might encounter.
2. SG:A used a civilian psychotherapist, but a military one is acceptable, though whether they are civilian or military should impact their approach/portrayal.
3. Twenty-five is pretty young for what she is being asked to do. This ties to your biography, which should be minimum of three paragraphs. The Stargate Program is top secret and kept from the public. How did she qualify for this posting and clearance? After that, why did she volunteer for the Atlantis Expedition and why was she considered a better candidate than any other?
@Damonique
Things I like:
1. Implication of intimate relations with humans. It could be an interesting roleplay opportunity.
2. Basically everything about her inventory. It helps to highlight her personality.
Notes:
1. Even with stellar variance between her birth planet and the refugee planet, I am fairly sure her age would be known.
2. Re: Abilities
Swap perfect recall for exceptional recall. I can't find reference to perfect recall, just genetic memory, which doesn't prove that the memories are correct or complete. Martouf/Lantesh had their memories altered.
Anubis used Ancient to cipher his secrets and the Tok'ra were unable to break the ciphers. Daniel created a Tau'ri guide to translation that helped many Tau'ri learn, but that doesn't mean Amadae would be given this information. Even understanding the Ancient language, the Tau'ri frequently struggled to understand Ancient technology to the very end of both SG-1 and Atlantis.
Other languages need to be reduced in number and explicitly listed. Knowing Old French is different than the knowing the obscure language of a one-time ally of the Tok'ra reduced to ash by the Goa'uld.
The Jaffa work out and train, so the physical benefit is iffy and I don't recall any instance where a Tok'ra became martially capable due to their symbiote's past knowledge.
You can keep or strike the reference to the Ancient gene, though the symbiote impact is noted.
3. Re: Background
Is the Asgard Alliance the Protected Planets Treaty or the Alliance of Four Great Races (Ancient, Asgard, Nox, Furlings)? The PPT was an Asgard bluff used mainly to protect small planet-tied populations; there isn't much indication that most populations in the Milky Way not under the Goa'uld used their stargates like those in the Pegasus galaxy as a means of escaping when attacked. As for the Alliance, it was dead by the time Amadae was born seeing as Tok'ra hosts only live two centuries and nobody was actively protecting the Milky Way from the Goa'uld.
To my knowledge the Tok'ra did not co-exist with the free Jaffa until the events of Stargate SG-1 and even then they kept their distance. Likewise the two did not mingle with those not of their own kind. I doubt any of the PPT planets housed either as the Goa'uld would find it too inflammatory. Otherwise there would be at least some attempt to shelter an open Tok'ra base under the PPT.
Why did Amadae stay on the refugee planet after becoming a Tok'ra? If she did, why would the Tok'ra choose a layabout for their representative to the Tau'ri, their most important growing ally? Why would the Tau'ri agree to take her? The Tau'ri and the Tok'ra always had rocky relations and it would be a big ask to house a Tok'ra in the SGC.
4. Above all else I want to see more about Emnon. Tok'ra hosts and symbiotes borrow heavily from each other, but that doesn't make them the same. Emnon should have their own CS to describe their background and, in particular, justify everything that they give to Amadae. How old are they? What is their standing in the Tok'ra? Why did they choose Amadae as a host? Where did they get their knowledge and experiences? What drives them?
I want to be clear that I am not trying to nit-pick, but characters do need to be reasonable and justified. I don't mind if a lot of this just comes out, as you said, in the IC, but I do need indications that there is a coherent, reasonable explanation for all of this.

Mind if I shoot you a PM to hash some of this out before I edit it to work? I'll admit I sorta winged it, and could definitely use some help filling in my rusty memory of the lore and timeline. The backstory was my attempt at some justification for someone in her position getting 'tapped' for the expedition, but I'd be more than happy to switch it for something better!

you make me sick
and you want to know why?
because you have everything, everything you ever really needed right there, and you through it all away
everything that you needed to be happy, and you kicked it to the side like a piece of trash.
and after everything you have ever done, you still have people that love you
and you won't even say a thing, like they are some worthless piece of crap that you can't stand to look at
and worst of all
you are trying to throw away the one thing you should be most proud of
yourself
don't you know that you are loved?
oh, boo hoo, your poor, your homeless, ah so what.
home is where the heart is, so, where is your heart?
I'll tell you where mine is, its where I can enjoy myself.
it's where I have friends to support me.
it's where I can be me.
that his where I call home.

I'm the Doctor. I'm a Time Lord. I'm from the planet Gallifrey in the constellation Kasterborous. I'm 903 years old, and I'm the man who's going to save your lives, and all six billion on the planet below. You got a problem with that?

Notes:
1. The Stargate Program is an assignment, but the Atlantis Expedition is on a voluntary basis. Why did Liana volunteer?
2. Raise her rank to something between corporal and second lieutenant. While the SGC does employ people with the rank of private, Liana's exploits would call for her promotion above that, perhaps even beyond NCO. The ceiling is that there is only one colonel and possibly one or two majors on this Expedition and I don't see her being brought in as one of the senior officers given her specialization.
3. We are keeping with SG:A's start, so the Expedition sets out on July 16th, 2004. You'll have to amend your character's bio to match.
4. Purple hearts are for those wounded in battle. Where was she wounded and how did that impact her?
Be prepared to expand in the IC on your character's backstory with things like details about her past exploits and family/friends. You don't have to include it in the CS bio unless it has a decisive impact on who she is currently.
