Dafu watched the woman a bit longer in her sleep before finding time to sleep himself, settling against the far wall behind him. After having given the woman his own bed, he chose the wall to rest against, used to sleeping light and with one eye open. Years in the trade had taught him to sleep light, though normally he kept a dagger close in paw. The woman's turning didn’t bother him much, but he was acutely aware of when she woke to explore. He wanted to allow her the time to explore and figure out the cave on her own. He wasn’t always the greatest with people, and while just having another human being to talk with was great, he didn’t want to get attached with her.

When she left the hole, Dafu got to work pulling something together for breakfast. While he had only been here for a few days, food was already scarce. Most of the food he didn’t question anymore, as it made his stomach roil at the thoughts, and required a lot of cooking before it was ready. The water he was lucky with, as it had rained long enough ago to allow him to collect enough to stave off thirst, with being sparring. Adding another person though, was going to cause problems.

“Ah, you had good walk? Dafu cook food.” Dafu responded as the curtain was pulled tight, blocking out the larger opening as he moved the cooked food onto the center area. The meat was cut and freshly seared. One could tell it was well done, but it was better than nothing, and Dafu wasn’t much of a cook. Still, it beat starving to death.

“Did Del find any sneak out holes?” Dafu asked while he started working on his meal, taking a decent swig of his cup of water before starting in on his portion of the meal.

“Good?” Del questioned as she looked towards the fox and shook her head. “I wouldn’t call it that Dafu...but it was informative.” She glanced at the ‘food’ he had cooked and swallowed hard. It was not what she would call edible, but like the beastly man before her, she knew her options were few.

Sitting down carefully so as not to hurt her back, the woman picked up the prepared meat and pushed it around with her fingers. She had seen the bones out in the cavern and knew some of them were humanoid...most of them actually. Closing her eyes, she placed a piece in her mouth and chewed...tough...blackened...and flavorless. She gagged then forced herself to swallow, the next morsel following the first minus the chewing.

“I’m sure I discovered the same holes as you...fox boy...but their end game is a mystery. Either we get to exploring their depths or starve to death if this meal is the best on the menu...neither choice a good one in my book.” She puffed out an exaggerated breath. “Gads...this might be the worst shit I have ever had the displeasure to taste. Next time, I cook, which normally would be a disaster.” Setting her portion to the side, she looked around the small area, taking note of the items stored there. The light was dim, but her eyes had already adjusted to the semi-darkness.

“We’re going to need tools...for digging mostly...and something to store water in...a bladder of some sort. Unless you happened upon a plastic bottle? ...and any food you have left we should prepare to help keep it longer. As safe a haven as this little alcove may seem to you, it’s only going to be a matter of time before we are discovered. We have to get out of here...and soon. One more day at the most.”

“Hmm,you speak truth. Hole only lasts so long.” Dafu spoke, nodding thoughtfully as he began nibbling on the food himself. He knew he was a shit cook, but he couldn’t stand eating the meat uncooked at all. Though when she mentioned tools for digging, he blanched, knowing that meant menial labor. Dafu hated menial labor, even more inside deep caves full of creepy crawling murder bugs. The idea of the woman cooking was nice to Dafu, as she couldn’t be as bad as Dafu. Setting the food aside and taking a small sip of water, letting it wash down the tastes of charcoal jerky easily.

“No have bottle, and bladder not for carry water to drink.” Dafu spoke and patted his stomach, letting out a small bit of laughter before falling silent again. They needed a way to carry the water, and he didn’t have anything practical to carry. He wracked his brain for a few moments before an idea struck his mind. Motioning her to remain silent, he dashed out of the cave, silent paws across the rocky floor. He moved quickly to the heap pile that was near the sand hill, mostly stuff he had cleared out of the way to preserve things that may fall from the ground.

Rifling through them, he began pulling several items that had fallen from the above ground, items that normally would be completely useless. Bundling them up in his arms he moved back towards the cave, much slower this time to avoid dropping anything. It didn’t take long before he entered the hole, laying out the scabbards that he had pulled from the ground. They were all several sizes, some skinny but long, others much flatter yet barely the size of ones forearm.

“Dafu knows these can carry water, if we can cover top.” Dafu spoke, placing his hand over the top before giving the girl a large toothy grin. It was a simple idea, but better than nothing for them.

Del sighed, her eyes rolling as the fox made an attempt at a joke...or perhaps he hadn’t understood her meaning of the word “bladder”. Either way, she offered a small smile, then merely nodded when he told her to stay put while he went out to rummage. She didn’t bother getting up when he returned a bit later with a few empty blade holders, seemingly pleased with himself. Again she sighed. She would have preferred the swords or daggers that had fitted within the slender tubes...but she kept her mouth shut, not wanting to upset the creature by being negative.

“You’re right...I suppose,” she said hesitantly. “They will carry water...but not nearly enough for our purposes. I hope there is water deeper within the caves or we won’t have to worry about dying at the hands of the ants.” With a groan she shifted uncomfortably. She needed to stretch...the hard floor only aggravating her injuries more. It was a struggle, but she managed to get to her feet with the help of the wall. “Stupid...fucking…” Cutting herself off, she nearly growled, pushing down her anger at the situation, then forcing a smile. She turned her attention back to Dafu, her breath puffing out as she redirected her train of thought.

“What about your food supply?” she asked, her teeth gritted as she moved closer to the furred man, her hand massaging the small of her back. Things just weren’t working out the way she had hoped...if hope was the right feeling. ...and to be shackled with a beast-man of all things...it couldn't possibly get any worse. Despite her prejudice, a random thought flitted through her mind...soft? or bristly?...and she reached out to touch his coat...albeit briefly.

Del stopped in her tracks. With a force of will, she reined her hand in, shaking her head. “Why don’t you show me what you have,” she suggested, her face flushing before she added “...food wise. ...and I will see what I can do with it before we make further plans.” She had no idea what had come over her...reaching out to pet him like that. She would have to remember that he saw himself as a human...not an animal….and would expect to be treated as such. It didn’t help that the scent he gave off was musky.

“Tell you what,” she said, hoping her blunder could be buried in further conversation, “...I’ll cook the remaining food stuff while you gather some tools for digging...a femur bone broken at a sharp angle should do the trick. ...unless there are shovels out there.” She raised her brow...although the fox was not heavily built, she knew the beastfolk tended to be stronger than they looked. Hopefully he would prove her right.

"Dafu not have much left." He smiled while standing up, having noted how she had moved towards him. Dafu had been no stranger to people wanting to feel his fur, and her statement had made him mentally chuckle. With a bit of a bounce, Dafu headed over to the far side of the small room, a spot furthest away from the door. Digging into the ground with his hands, Dafu pulled out several bundles of obviously meat, wrapped tight in cloth. He had hidden them under the ground to avoid the scent getting out into the caves. Of course he had made sure each meat piece was well covered and each bundle had been both covered in cloth and mud to avoid it drying out.

"Dafu save much as possible." Dafu spoke as he pulled out around twenty bundles of meat, each twice the size of a tennis ball. It wasn't a massive amount, but more than enough to feed for some time. Setting them down carefully, Dafu cracked open the first few bundles, revealing the red meat beneath the bundles. Moving them closer, he would allow Del to work over the meat as he went hunting. Dafu gave her a short nod as he left the home again and headed to the giant pile of sand. If there were any good bones, that would be the spot.

"Now, Del said Dafu need femur? Dafu guess strong bone." Dafu mumbled to himself as he began picking through the bottom of the pile, the bones having been hidden under the tumbling sand. He himself had never really needed much for digging as his natural claws helped with that. Though, Dafu had never really needed to dig into stone for his survival here just yet. Escape would make that different though. Picking through the bones, Dafu set aside every thick and heavy bone he could find, making sure to pick the ones that had no damage and didn't crumble under his fingers. He wondered just how long these bodies had been under here, and who had been dropping them.

"Question later." Dafu allowed himself a smile as he moved back to the home, clutching his bundles of bones tight in his arms.

Del sat down gingerly near the small fire as soon as the fox left. Looking over the bundles of meat, she shook her head in frustration, picking up the first one and examining it closely. Animal or humanoid, she wondered, telling herself it was not one of her fellow 'human' counterparts. Although her assessment was based on hope, she kept the idea foremost in her head as she began cutting the slab into thinner sections with the sharp sliver of shale the fox had been using as a knife. It was a tedious process, each piece set out on the wrapping cloth until she had gone through five packs. She then covered the meat with another strip of the fabric and 'tenderized' it with a stone that fit firmly in the palm of her hand.

These strips were then put on the fire, the fat sizzling and spitting as she cooked them, turning them frequently so they wouldn't burn. "I'm not a fricking chef," she said under her breath, "...why did I volunteer for this?" Her typical use of curse words was still being stemmed until she knew just who she was dealing with in regards to her 'roommate'. Swearing made her seem tougher...more intimidating...and there was a possibility that Dafu would respond better if he thought he was the alpha. She would let him hold that position until it suited her to take control.

Sitting back, Del continued the process...cutting...tenderizing...cooking. She listened for the fox, his trek outside the small cave done so quietly she could barely hear him scampering about. That was one advantage to having furred feet...built-in soundproof padding. She still couldn't believe she had tried to pet that fur. She must have a concussion, the fall knocking the sense right out of her. Good thing he didn't call her on it...been offended by her intent. She would have to be more careful, the last thing she needed was a clingy pet.

Chuckling to herself at the image that in her head, Del tossed the last of the fox's food supply onto the metal sheet they were using as a pan. There was more here than she had realized, the chances that the meat would go bad before they ate it all very likely. They would probably eat it anyhow. Once they ventured deeper into the caves, there was no telling when they might encounter a food source again. Water might not be a problem, condensation and underground streams both very plausible sources. The chance of encountering an ant was also a possibility, which would mean their end, unless Dafu proved to be more of a predator than she gave him credit for.

“Food smell good. Del good cook.” Dafu spoke as he pushed aside the curtain, several bones held tight in his arms. Several strong bones were wrapped in his arms, pieces of old leather held in them as well. Giving her a wolfish smile, he set the bone pieces down quietly, allowing them to settle into an easily manageable pile. Doing this twice, he brought several bones into the cave, each one having been dried and scoured by sand and time from the Melioruts need to eat and clean.

“Dafu gather several sturdy bones. Not sure which be femur.” He spoke, picking through them as he separated them into separate piles, from biggest to smallest. The largest one he had found was roughly the length of his own leg from hip to toe. One could easily tell it was from an orc, just by how thick the bone was.

“Dafu think this make great whacking bone.” He spoke, tapping it against the nearby stones.

“So, you use for dig? How make pointy?” Dafu asked as he continued to shift through them, putting aside the ones he believed that would work the best for the two of them.

Putting aside the last of the cooked meat, Del offered a slight smile at the lithe fox's compliment before heading over to inspect the bones he had gathered. "Femurs are the large bones in the upper leg," she said, pointing to her own thigh as reference. "Didn't your parents send you to school? That would be basic anatomy." Scoffing, she lifted up one of the larger specimens and turned it in her hand. "No matter...it seems you did well without that knowledge."

Walking over beside him, she held the bone she had chosen in one hand, then pressed its tip to the rough stone floor. "The one you have would make a good club, but for the others we should sharpen them like this." She proceeded to push hers in a forward motion, turning the tip as she continued the movement. "It shouldn't take too long to get a good edge...and then we can head out. Preferably before another night passes. I need to stretch my legs and back...and my headache isn't going to get any better cooped up in here with you. No offense, but I think we could both use a shower."

Smiling in an offhanded way, the detective continued sharpening her newly acquired tool, her eyes straying occasionally to see if the fox was following suit. The food was ready, the water was gathered, and that just left preparing the bones and getting Dafu to pack up anything he felt he needed. She chuckled to herself as his name played through her head. Dafu...Da Fuck...the similarity was uncanny. She just hoped she wouldn't let the latter slip from her tongue out of frustration with the presumably ignorant beast. She was sure he had his good points, such as when he saved her life, but she was finding it difficult to remain unbiased in his presence. Her past experiences with such characters was clouding her judgement. Would she truly be able to trust him if their backs were against the wall? Or would he gladly push her in front of him to make his getaway from the Melioruts or any other danger they might encounter? There really was no way for her to be sure...and she would stay on her guard until she knew his true nature. Foxes were a clever species...wily little creatures with their quick hands and darting movements. It would take some convincing, but if Dafu proved his worth, she just might give others of his kind a second chance.

"Parents taught Dafu how hunt, not need know bones." Dafu told Del, chuckling as she motioned to the bone in his hand, and how it could be used as a club. She was right though, as the weight alone felt well balanced. Taking a few practice swings, he knew it would strike well on most surfaces. The only problem would be that most Melioruts would be hard to crack even with an orc swing. When Del started to rub a broken one along the ground. The idea was a simple one, and Dafu was shocked he hadn’t thought of it before. Looking down at his own nails, the concept was real simple. Setting down the whacking club, Dafu sorted through the pile there, looking for one that would fit well in his grip.

“Aha, Dafu found strong one.” Dafu spoke as he slipped the bone free from the pile and showed it off to Del. With a smile he moved towards the rock he had been using as a seat and balanced the bone atop it. Searching around, he grabbed a strong rock and moved back over, twisting the resting bone as best he could. Raising the rock in his free hand, he brought it down on the bone with an uncomfortable crunch, feeling the shock roll through his arm. A few more whacks he brought the rock down, flecks of bone skittering before he finally managed to snap the bone in half, jagged points decorating the broken ends.

“Dafu use daggers.” Dafu showed off his broken bones before setting the rock down and picking up the bones. Settling down with a comfortable shift of weight, Dafu began working the two bones, using the roughest patch he could find to work with. Placing the edges down, he pushed and twisted the bones forward, moving them in one smooth motion, pulling the bone up as he reset the position. A small hum followed the motion as he worked, deft hands working with practiced ease as he sharpened the bones into a strong point. The small hums with the scraping of bone was a surprisingly comforting sound as he worked, like a blacksmith working at their trade.

Del watched the fox with amused interest, his youthful enthusiasm was refreshing, but also a little worrisome. Hopefully he could funnel that energy into aggression if needed, otherwise their little foray into the depths of this stone warren was going to be deadly. She appraised his make-shift blades once he completed them and made a clicking noise with her tongue. "They look nice and sharp Dafu...now maybe you should work on a few of the longer ones. I really want to get on our way soon."

She went back to working on her selected bones, and after a short time had finished sharpening three of them. Wiping the sweat from her forehead, she carried them over to the packages of meat and looked around for something to wrap up their food supply. Spotting a balled up piece of material in a corner, she grabbed it up, realizing only after she shook it out that it was an oversized shirt. Without giving it's previous owner any thought, she tore it in half and packaged half of the meat in each piece.

"Dafu?" she questioned, "...I only have the water left to get ready. Maybe you can go out and make sure the coast is clear? Your eyes and ears are better than mine, so it's better if you scout for us."

Her reasoning sounded good to her, plus it might get him moving in the right direction. If not for the shortage of water, she might had settled for staying put for a while longer, at least until her damn headache was gone. As things stood, getting out of these tunnels had to be her first priority. They were not going to be rescued. It was more likely they would be consumed, and she for one did not want to be on a damn ant's menu. Turning around, she picked up one of the long tube-like sheaths that the fox had gathered and began filling it with water. There would only be enough for two.
