    Default Worm: Escalation (OOC)

The golden age of Heroes came and went in the blink of an eye.

When the first Parahuman revealed his powers and put on his hero costume, the world looked on him with joy and wonder. Powers that only existed in fiction were bestowed upon special individuals, seemingly at random. Vikare was not the first Parahuman, but he was the first regular citizen given power. He moved objects with his mind, saving dozens upon dozens of lives and asking for nothing in return.

His bright smile endeared him to the nation. Countless boys and girls dreamed of becoming a great hero fighting for justice and putting criminals and villains into jail. To this day, his brightly colored costume and purple cape are iconic, with the entire culture of heroism and villainy following his brightly colored aesthetics.

Yes, the world remembers Vikare. The world also remembers when he was clubbed in the back of the head with a baseball bat by an unpowered human while trying to stop a riot, and died in the hospital due to brain embolism a scant few years after his debut. The courts remember the laws they put into place to protect the nation's hero's secret identities after Vikare’s wife was killed and his child crippled after his identity was revealed after death, a villain's cruel revenge.

The golden age of Heroes came and went in the blink of an eye.

Vikare’s death was like a signal to Murphy himself, a downward spiral as event after event drowned the world in misery.

Endbringers, monsters of unknown origin, began assaulting the world. Behemoth, the first of the three, appeared in New Delhi and wreaked havoc, killing a hundred heroes and thousands of civilians with his lightning strikes and monstrous strength before being beaten off.

Leviathan appeared four months later, drowning Newfoundland in the ocean, sending wave after wave of crashing onto its shores and rendering the entire area uninhabitable. No attack has done anything more than scratch his scales, its powers of hydrokinesis serving as both a shield and a sword.

The Simurgh descended upon Lausanne, Switzerland and began singing. Three days later, the entire population began killing each other. The ones who escaped spread their madness to the rest of the world, as they tried killing authority figures. One succeeded, killing the Prime Minister of a nation. The monstrous woman’s powers of precognition and mind control made her the most feared of the three. If she isn’t beaten in half an hour, the city is quarantined off and no one is allowed to leave.

The golden age of Heroes came and went in the blink of an eye.

Despite the Endbringers, humans themselves gladly inflict suffering upon others as well. The Slaughterhouse 9 roam the continental United States, killing and slaughtering rural towns for sport. The Three Blasphemies plague Europe, causing the deaths of hundreds of heroes before the world realized that unless all three were killed at the same time, they would revive over and over. The Ash Beast walks in Africa and no one steps in his way, as all living matter around him is blown up again and again and again.

With the rise of so-called “capes”, the government finally stepped in, forming the Parahuman Response Team. This paramilitary government organization consists of unpowered people and heroes who join the Protectorate, the world’s first government sponsored super hero team. They encompass parahuman law enforcement and have limited military support in the form of strike drones and training for PRT troopers.

You and your fellow Protectorate heroes are transferring in from various cities to help the beleaguered PRT in Brockton Bay, the site of highest parahuman crime in the U.S. It is here where backup is sorely needed, only capable of fielding half a dozen adult heroes to fight crime. The Nazi gang, Empire 88, is the strongest gang in the city, numbering at just over a dozen villains who will gladly go toe to toe with the Protectorate. Kaiser, with his power to make metal spike into swords in a large radius, leads them.

The Azn Bad Boys, a collection of Asian immigrants, have only two villians, yet they prize quality over quantity. Lung is the leader, a man capable of growing and growing as a fight drags on, his power ever increasing without limit. If a fight continues for too long, he transforms into a massive dragon, breathing fire and crashing through buildings. He has taken on the entire Protectorate in Brockton Bay and won. Not only that, he went toe to toe with Leviathan and survived, the only parahuman to have ever have done so.

Brockton Bay citizens are caught between these giants, as well as dozen other issues like the Merchants, the gang that has a sizable control of the drug trade in the city. Like Coil and his band of highly trained mercenaries, controlling only a few city blocks but fending off incursions with military weapons and Tinkertech lasers.

It is up to you, heroes, to make the world a better place. One city at a time.

    Spoiler: Powers and Classifications

    Characters sheet
Name: Secret identities are important. You do not unmask to someone unless you trust them.

Cape/hero Name: You will be referred to as such, for most of the time.

Age: If you are an adult, you are a full time hero and will be sent to fight villains. If you are a teenager, you are a Ward and generally do not get sent to the frontlines unless things get bad.

Appearance: Just a picture is fine, but it would be really helpful to get a full description of both how your character looks and what their costume looks like.

Power: Think about it, make sure you have limitations, and I’ll assign you your classifications.

Trigger Event: You just had the worst day of your life. That's how you got your power. That's how it works for everyone. A single sentence is fine.

Equipment: What are your fighter tools. Remember, killing is considered a BAD THING, both for heroes and villains but you can still use weapons. For example, Shadow Stalker uses a crossbow that shoots bolts with knockout serum or blunted bolts. Guns are a no-no for the Protectorate and are faux-pas for independent heroes and vigilantes.

Background: Where are you from? If you want something to make your background unique, hit the Worm Wiki for information on cities or come to me, and I can tell you interesting stuff about your chosen area.

Personality: Broad strokes please, I prefer the personality get shown IC instead of being written down as a list in the character sheet.

Be wary of paramilitaries. When the men with guns who have always claimed to be against the system start wearing uniforms and marching around with torches and pictures of a Leader, the end is nigh. When the pro-leader paramilitary and the official police and military intermingle, the end has come.

    Misc info

    "Unwritten Rules"

This regards the so called "unwritten rules" that both heroes and villains abide by. Under no circumstance should you EVER go after a cape in their civilian identity. If you find out someone's secret identity, keep that to yourself. The unwritten rules are there so one's family is never targeted.

If you break the unwritten rules? There'll be hell to pay. If a hero does it, villains, regardless of their relationship will work together to kill you. Same if a villain does it to another villain, and arguably, it can be even worse for them. Other villains will gladly give information to rivals or to the PRT in the hopes that the person who broke the unwritten rules will be killed or tossed in jail.

One of the bigger reasons these rules exist is because of the Endbringers.

In the event of an Endbringer attack, villains and heroes work together to drive off the beasts. As a villain, there are a number of perks for participating in these events. A "truce" will be held, that no matter what, no hero or villain will fight each other, and this extends into a grace period after an Endbringer attack ends. It also boosts a villains reputation in the public eye, with sometimes regular law enforcement turning a blind eye to a villains more harmless ventures.

    Follow the unwritten rules.

Looks good, for the most part. Some misc information I have yet to put in is that Tinkers also have a specialty. This is where the Tinker shines and their other tech suffers for it. Is your tinker a specialist in creating androids/robots? Then your prosthetics need to be nerfed. Is prosthetics your specialty? Then your robot needs to be nerfed. Just square that away, and your character is accepted.

Read over the Tinker's entry, revised my sheet a bit.

    Name: Samantha Igorina Ivanovna
    Cape/hero Name: Gargoyle
    Age: 23
Appearance: This girl reminds you of a tightly coiled spring. Her left eye is a beady black dot that looks like a drop of oil, her right is covered by an eye patch. For effect, she sometimes wear different unfunctional glass eyes in the socket - her favorites being a cats eye and one with a blue pentagram. Her luxurious, wavy, neck-length hair is the color of chestnuts, and is brushed to cover the right side of her face. She is short and has a thin build. Her skin is pale. She has a hooked nose and hollow cheeks, with a long scar running from her right forehead to the corner of her mouth, twisting it into a sort of permanent smirk. Her wardrobe is weird, mostly a mix of military surplus and findings from second-hand stores.

Neighborhood kids call her "Mrs. Death" when they see her.

    Power: Tinkerer
Trigger Event: When Josh Boyle, Debbie Hart's boyfriend for three years, broke up with her, Debbie's suspicions immediately turned towards Sam, having caught the two of them talking a few times. In a jealous rage, she went after Sam with a baseball bat while the science geek was showering in the high school gym locker room.

Paramedics and doctors recorded her injuries as a concussion, broken right arm, displaced right hip, broken ribs, bruised organs, internal bleeding, lacerations to face, limbs and torso, right eye knocked out of the socket and crushed.

That afternoon, while explaining what had happened at school, Josh came out to his parents and introduced them to his boyfriend, Seth Barry, who lived across the street.

    Equipment:
    Spoiler: Gargoyle Suit Mk. IV

Background: Tomboy navy brat, was moving every two years as her father changed assignments, usually to out-of-the-way places in various parts of the US and the world. Made it difficult to keep friends, was the eternal "new kid." Knows how to pack, is used to living out of suitcases and boxes. As the oldest child, she was the responsible one, helping her parents with various projects, be it electronics, car maintenance, or home repair.

Where other girls had dolls, she had science kits and tool boxes.

Dislikes talking about her name - "Sam" came about because her father really wanted a boy, and traditionally in his family the son's middle name is taken from the father - who was Igor, so he put Igorina in on the birth certificate.

On her first return to high school following the attack, in a wheelchair because of her hip, she abruptly realized that they were taking her to the gym where the school had decided to hold a special assembly to welcome her back. Student and faculty could hear her screaming in the hallway as she frantically lunged at a water fountain and managed to knock the wheelchair over. An ambulance took her to the hospital where she received x-rays to check her injuries, tranquilizers and clean clothes, while a janitor had to clean up the mess by the water fountain.

The stories of the brutal attack and that special assembly are still being told to freshmen.

Personality: Very shy and reserved, takes Sam a while to get comfortable with people. In social situations where she had to mingle with others, she tends to be the wall flower, mumbling when asked anything and ducking away at the first opportunity. Favors books over people as they provide comfortable escapes without judgment, full of information she could use. Would happily inhabit a library, with a strong interest in science and anime.

Debbie's brutal attack has made her agoraphobic - she only feels safe in her home, her work lab, or while wearing her gargoyle suit, which the later seems to boost her confidence. While therapy has helped her, if abruptly stripped out of her suit, she can still suffer from a panic attack, curling up in a fetal position.

    Alright, looks good! Accepted.

Honestly, your character seems a perfect match for the other Tinker in Brockton Bay; Armsmaster

    @Enigma

Not much interest in this, are you okay with it just being us two? I'll keep it open so if anyone wants to, they can just drop in when they feel like it.

I was hoping for more players. I'm not good as a solo act, sorry.

I’ve heard about this series before and might be interested, but a bit more research on my end is in order before I can come up with a good character concept.
    Thanks for the set, Kicks!
