With the speeder moving at a brisk pace, Marienna sat in the heavy silence that had fallen upon the the two lieutenants. The wind whipped through her hair, the steady speed keeping it suspended in the air as though it were in the midst of the act of flight. It had not been lost on the young lieutenant that the situation which had just unfolded before them seemed to take a toll on Corwin, a visible toll. Not only had he lost his stomach, all traces of color had left his skin. "Are you alright, Lieutenant?" she finally brought herself to ask. Once more with a level tone that would betray nothing of how she truly felt in the moment. Marienna also fundamentally understand he was very much not alright, despite whatever he would answer to say otherwise.

Marienna could feel her own emotions rising within her, and she would do everything in her power to push them back down so that they may never see the light of day. Her eyes were burning from holding back the tears. Tears for the horror that she had seen today, for the injured, for the dead. It was senseless violence, it seemed to serve no purpose at all. Someone had fired the first shot, a shot which would have killed her had they left minutes earlier. She needed to know who had done this, though this was not a logisticians question to ask. There was pain, anger and frustration. But, as always she had to prove her continued worth. To her superiors, she was ever present, calm, collected. She reacted swiftly in a poor situation, just as Corwin had done. She supposed, when she really thought about it, this was how she survived and in fact, excelled in her position. She got the job done, no matter what the personal sacrifice. Though in truth, she wanted nothing more than to explode and let her emotions burst forth and tear her asunder.

For a brief moment, from the corner of her eye, as they drove on she caught Corwin turning to glance at her before moving rather swiftly to look head on. He seemed to refuse to look at her after that point. Perhaps it was the blood she could feel had dried and tightened against her face or her neck. Perhaps it was the stench of the mud and death that clung to her uniform. She mused briefly on the subject of what he truly thought of her. Did he think her heartless for her reaction or lack there of? Most would. It was best for her not to dwell on the situation, however that would be to her own downfall as far worse thoughts and memories would come spilling forward. She piloted the craft on toward their base.

"It's pretty shocking...the first time you see something like that..." Marienna spoke softly now, but directly. There was still very little of any kind of emotion in her voice, it was more of a candid observation. She couldn't be certain it was Corwin's first exposure to this kind of attack while assignment. It certainly wasn't hers. "I wish I could say you forget, or you get over it... you don't." Marienna kept her eyes forward, looking directly at the road ahead as the two continued on. "But it gets... easier. With time." This was true, and Marienna knew she was running a risk by speaking as she had been. He likely did not want to discuss the matter. But then again, she didn't expect him to say much.

"Awhile back, I was on assignment to Wookie Planet C." Marienna began something of an anecdote she felt might be appropriate, or perhaps this was her own way of coping with her assorted trauma. Wookie Planet C, of course was better known as Kashyyyk. The Empire felt a little re-branding might help quash the spirit of the ever rebellious wookie population. "Survey remaining assets after the Imperial bombing campaign... and prepare most of the local population for redistribution." Redistribution was the language they used to avoid calling things as they were. Yes, they would redistribute the wookies across the Empire, but as slaves bought and sold. This was the price for their open insurrection. Marienna continued in the same tone of voice, though it trembled ever so slightly if one had paid enough attention. "Terrible, awful rain... Like you wouldn't imagine. The skies just opened up and it felt like it would never stop. Well, we were coming in for a landing when we were shot down." She sighed a bit, as though struggling to hold something back.

Marienna could remember every last second of it. Marienna wanted to forget all of those seconds. The troop transport that carried her and several other members of their division fell from the sky, fast and hard, crashing down through the canopy through the massive branches of the thick grouping of great wroshyr trees. "The hatches had been opened, as we all thought we'd be out soon... but I fell out." The feeling of free falling was terrifying, thinking on it she just gripped her hands tighter in that moment against the wheel. Falling and watch the transport below you finally crash down allowing the fire to spread and the screaming to begin. "I caught hold of the edge of... what had once been one of the great sky bridges, the kind that connected tree to tree." It had been a bridge until the transport took it out on the way down. Marienna still bore the scars on her arms of the jagged shards of wood sliced through her uniform and her flesh, leaving her a bleeding mess pelted by the onslaught of raindrops, struggling to hold on to frayed rope for her life. "That's when they came out of hiding... and began picking us off one by one, if the crash hadn't killed us already." It was at this her tone dropped, audible sadness came from her for the first time.

Sitting there, Marienna could feel her heart begin to race as she recalled the sounds of blaster fire, the smell of the smoke as it billowed higher and higher into the sky. "A trooper from a nearby regiment found me... pulled me up. 6 of us, lowly bean counters lost their lives that day..." Marienna trailed off, bringing to mind the image of herself, as though she had some kind of out of body experience. Watching as she collapsed into the trooper, crying hysterically, sopping wet with rain and blood. "It's not supposed to happen to us." Her matter of fact tone had now returned, the guard walls raised fully, protecting her from herself. "But it does. Today it did."

Her time on Wookie Planet C was recorded in her file, as well as the standard review of her performance. The incident however, briefly mentioned, glossed over. An Imperial attempt to downplay the extent of the rebellion on planets like Kashyyyk. Instead her story remained on the planet, resting without peace where the downed transport undoubtedly still lay, grown over. Two tears flowing, rolling down her cheek, quickly wiped off, she regained her composure as the pair arrived at the entrance to the Imperial compound. "And it will happen again...maybe here... maybe elsewhere." Marienna powered down the vehicle and exited. If she was right, and that attack was an act of rebellion or revolution, they would see more violence and bloodshed here on Qiilura, unless they were pulled from the planet. That seemed unlikely, she was acutely aware of how expendable she was.

Looking around, it felt different now, like the base was somehow quieter. Walking into the structure, it was clear it was now manned by a skeleton crew. It would seem the majority of the staff had been dispatched to deal with the situation that was unfolding, or were simply off elsewhere on the planet performing their regularly scheduled duties. There was something in that moment that felt incredibly wrong. Off. Her hand rested on the hilt of her signature blaster. "Just in case..." she whispered quietly to herself turning to look at Corwin, even if he could not look at her. She wondered if all the warmth he had felt toward her was gone, if he just misunderstood her reaction. Or he understood all too well.

Corwin was startled when Marienna spoke; realizing he had been replaying their morning before the incident, trying to identify what one event had saved them. It felt so long ago. Had it been Marienna’s choice to drive? The officer’s interruption as they walked?

There it was, that cool emotionless tone again.
Did the woman have any emotion? She must have; he had glimpsed it, like rays of sunshine through an overcast sky these last few days. Or was it all just an act; an effort to make him feel more comfortable? The uncertainty troubled him; more than that, it angered him. She had said they were supposed to be ‘friends’ and he had acquiesced to her request; or was that just a game to gain his trust? And what was behind this… consoling?
He would not be taken for a fool, not again.

He listened cautiously as she began her story. At first he wasn’t sure what to expect. As she continued, he recalled her file mentioning something of the incident on the Wookie homeworld. A futile effort on the native’s part. He wondered how they didn’t tire of the fighting, death and pain. It would be so much easier for everyone to work together in peace.

Corwin desperately wanted to look over at Marienna, but he knew he couldn’t stomach the sight of her. What was her expression? Was her face masked in sorrow, anger, or the now stained porcelain dolls? He didn’t know which he would have preferred at that moment.

After the sights at the convoy, he felt he could almost imagine the scene on Kashyyyk. Bodies strewn about, the weary survivors crawling from the wreck. But there had been no shooting, no enemy to direct their anger at, or flee from.
No justice to be had for the dead.
That was what angered Corwin the most.

His fists were white knuckled resting in his lap as they arrived back at the compound. He would not allow it to happen again; not if there was anything he could do about it. And he would see justice done if the whole planet needed to be set ablaze.

He had been lost in his thoughts when the crunching of the packed dirt underfoot caught his attention. Marienna had left the speeder on her way back to their office. He quickly climbed out and followed, glad to be watching the wisps of hair moving peacefully on the breeze rather than her ghastly visage.

The quiet that hung over the compound was the first thing he noticed, it took a moment to link it to the empty roads and lack of traffic. Then he felt it again, the unsettling sensation of being watched. He glanced around casually but didn’t spot anyone, let alone someone watching him. He nervously rested his hand on his belt, poised to draw his side arm.

The feeling faded as they moved inside; just in time for him to notice Marienna stiffen as she paused and glanced back to look at him. Corwin didn’t meet her gaze as he obviously avoided looking at her.

Corwin’s face was tight, muscles strained visibly in his jaw; the familiar smile was missing, replaced by a stony glower. Soot and dust clung to his face in spots where the sweat had dried. If they hadn’t been together the entire time, he could have been mistaken for someone else.

“What is it?” He murmured, his voice tight with tension but weariness showed through. His own grip tightened on his belt.

Jinart's infiltration had gone smoothly enough. She new broadly what Imperial's looked like and their 'officers' self righteous attitude seemed to come with the uniform. The hard part was looking like she belonged while she waited for her targets. She had done three circuits of the compound before she spotted the pair.

"Lieutenant Beren?" She was a bit surprised at the tone of her masculine voice. Male human voices always sounded harsh to her ears.
The ghostly black haired woman turned, the description had been dead on, she was hard to miss with skin like snow in the moonlight. Her red bearded companion smiled at the officer she was impersonating and for a moment she though she made a grave mistake and unknowingly become someone familiar to the man.

"Are you going to keep me waiting all day, or was there something I can help you with?" The woman's icy tone blistered with impatience. Jinart made careful notice of every syllable, every line and crease of her face.

"Apologies, ma'am." This was the moment of truth, would the bearded man blow her cover? "Lieutenant." she said only pausing a moment before swinging back into her planned lines.
"A Mr. Kuna Syko dropped this datapad off for you, he said you requested it." She extended a hand which contained the pad passed on to her from Syko and the key to get her in the door to observe her mark.

Marienna took it quickly and nodded in acknowledgment. "If that's all, you should get back to your post. You shouldn't have left it in the first place. Next time have the couriers take it over, okay?"

Jinart was surprised by the softening of the woman's voice. Imperials were quick to discipline, harsh and cut throat humans. A soft correction seemed.. odd. There was no time to dwell as she nodded in understanding and strode off.

She laid low until the alarm went out across the Imperial Stronghold. After a brief flurry of activity, the compound was nearly deserted. Now the ghostly Lt. Beren, it was easy to infiltrate their offices. Slicing the door was child's play, the security was laughable, at least for a shapeshifter.

Jinart was surprised to see a droid when she entered the office. It beeped and clicked happily at the sight of LT. Beren as it worked away at the terminal. A trifle, to deal with, she called it over and it obeyed contently. A shame, the machine couldn't even see it's destruction coming.

Corwin pushed past roughly as he marched quickly down the hall. He drew his side arm, stabbing the code into the door control, it hissed open.
Corwin emitted a very uncharacteristic curse as he halted in the doorway. He pivoted, doing his best to block the doorway with his body, though he still didn’t meet Marienna’s eyes.
“Turn around, you don’t want to look in there. We need to notify security before we disturb the scene.”

He hoped she would listen. Their office was a mess, data pads and terminals scattered around the room with sheets of flimsy covering the floor. That wasn’t what he was trying to protect her from though. Debris from what remained of KV-2’s chassis were scattered about the room. The torn and shredded bits of metal made it look like the droid had exploded, but the room lacked the significant damage that no doubt would have resulted.

There was no doubt in Corwin’s mind that this wasn’t a coincidence. He was very interested in speaking with Kuna Syko again.

She was wrong. Corwin Fischer was no different from anyone else she had met in the course of her work. There was a moment or even two where she thought he was, where she felt he was genuinely interested in getting to know her, trying to understand her. It had been for nothing. There was also an element of disbelief within herself, that right now this was what had crept into her mind, occupying her thoughts. Her focus only broken when he had pushed past her making his way toward their office.

The uncomfortable quiet of the base settled back in. Walking slowly behind Corwin she let out a deep exhale, the stress of the day welling up so within her that she was finally forced to expel something. Tears, she would push those deeper and deeper within herself. Screaming? Much the same. A single prolonged sigh was the best she could do in such a setting. The moment he opened the door, she could tell something had changed. He didn't need to say a word, but then again, of course he would. A definitive request for her not to enter that office. A request she had no intention of honoring.

Marienna pushed her way past Lt. Fischer and once inside the office her heart sank at what she saw. It was a mess, though she cared not for the strewn about datapads or non-functional terminals. This was all insignificant compared the remains of KV-2. This was something she could not forgive, and something she most certainly was not in a position to handle after the disastrous events of the morning. Slowly, she stumbled over toward the remains. Her eyes darted across the room, cataloguing each and every piece of the droid, trying to assess whether or not the damage would be repairable. She moved toward the table where a larger piece of the chassis sat. Marienna rested a hand on the edge of the table, balancing herself against it. Resisting the urge to fall completely into it.

Her free hand now touched the remains, fingertips tracing along the jagged edges of the metal. Cool to the touch... whatever had happened to KV, he certainly hadn't exploded despite all appearances. This was intentional. This was made to appear this way though she couldn't figure out why. "His drives are gone..." she hadn't seen even a fragment of them around the room. She didn't turn to look at Corwin to speak this, she knew he wouldn't want to see her face anyway. There was a profound sadness in her voice, a sense of defeat even. This had been the proverbial straw that had broken the camel's back. "Schematics... data... everything..." There was no possibility of restoring KV in any degree with this, pieces that also contained the elements of his personality. The very thing which made him, well... him.

After several long moments of absolute silence, Marienna finally turned around. Tears streaming down her face. She could no longer hide it. The amount of death and destruction she had witnessed, and now the destruction of a droid she had known well. There wasn't enough strength left in her to continue to hide. "I'll report this..." she said softly and moved past Corwin once more. As she left the room one of the few remaining troopers stopped, looking rather curiously at her before speaking. "Lt. Beren?" He inquired. Marienna wiped her tear stained cheeks and looked up. "Yes?" was her only simple word of response. "How long have you... I could have sworn I saw you..." Taking a moment to process what had just been said, it didn't quite seem to add up. "What are you talking about?"

"I guess... I was mistaken. I just thought I saw you... but you were out with Lt. Fischer..." Marienna sighed once more and found herself shaking her head. "We've been robbed... Go get the security footage, and organize everyone you can... search this place from top to bottom. Whoever was here, might still be here... And if the base commander gives you trouble, just blame it on me." Marienna issued her directives, regardless of what Lt. Fischer thought of her doing so. Yes, it likely should have come from him. Turning to face him she nodded. "I'm going to clean up... come find me when you can look at me again, Lieutenant."

She took her leave, caring little for the comment she had just made. There was no regret for her honesty, she simply felt too exhausted to consider she had overstepped a line. Once within the safety of her quarters, which had appeared largely undisturbed, she allowed herself to begin the process of slowly breaking down. Peeling the uniform from her flesh she made her way to the small shower, and allowed herself to slide down the wall, water on, audibly sobbing allowing the blood and dirt that caked to her skin slowly circle the drain. It wasn't long before she had composed herself, put on a freshly laundered and perfectly pressed uniform.

Corwin held his breath as Marienna pushed past him and entered their office, his anger suddenly quenched by the shock of the discovery. Holstering his weapon, he wasn’t sure what he was expecting; but he was hoping for anger, outrage; anything other than what followed. Her delicate footfalls and the silence that followed made his stomach tighten as he turned slowly. She sagged as if the room’s gravity was higher than the hallway he stood in. He watched her caress the shredded metal as if it were her own babe, and he knew.

Marienna hadn’t been acting. She really had been giving him glimpses beyond her icy shell. He felt his throat tighten.

"His drives are gone...Schematics... data... everything..."

Corwin cleared his throat before he spoke, his voice as level as he could manage. “We will find the ones that did this. They will be brought to justice.” He wasn’t sure if it was more for himself or Marienna, but he meant it as a vow.

He stared at Marienna’s back as the silence stretched. He wasn’t sure what he should do. She had done her best to comfort him, but would she want the same or had she just offered it as a nicety? Then she turned.

The sight of her hit him like a punch to the stomach. He wasn’t sure if it was the amount of sorrow painting her delicate features, or the contrast with how beautiful her smile had been.
The tears had washed clean streaks through the dust and crusted blood down her cheeks; fresh snow on a mountainside.
The morning seemed like years ago.

    "I'll report this..."

As she stepped back toward him, he took a quick step forward and wrapped his arms around her. He was no longer concerned with whether or not she would be angry with him; he couldn’t bring himself to ignore the instinct. She was in pain, and he would do whatever he could to ease it. Not because she was his subordinate, or a woman, but because at that moment, he could help.

“We will get him back…” He assured softly.

Marienna had been so alone that the droids had become her friends. He couldn’t imagine how devastating the loss was for her. They were more similar than he had first realized.

He released her after a moment, peering into her eyes, the faintest hint of a smile returning to his tired face.
    “Lead the way Lieutenant.”

He stepped aside and followed out of the office.

Could she have been so wrong? Could Corwin Fischer truly be no different from anyone else she had met in the course of her work? There was a moment or even two where she thought he was, where she felt he was genuinely interested in getting to know her, trying to understand her. It had been for nothing. Perhaps she was too quick to judgment. Marienna's head was filled with a thick fog, too many events, too much commotion. She couldn't possibly be thinking as clearly as she should be. Corwin was entitled to process his shock in his own way, surely this was what determined his actions, and not some deep seated betrayal of her. There was also an element of disbelief within herself, that right now this was what had crept into her mind, occupying her thoughts. Her focus only broken when he had pushed past her making his way toward their office.

The uncomfortable quiet of the base settled back in. “We will find the ones that did this. They will be brought to justice.

Marienna heard his words, but did little in response. She wanted to believe him, she would go so far as to say she did believe him. Though it do precious little for KV, the trauma already inflicted. What if they never found his drives? He would be gone forever. The moment, however, was heartening to a small extent, his words were a gesture, a promise even. Perhaps he did see her pain at long last.

After several long moments of absolute silence following his comment, Marienna finally turned around. Tears streaming down her face. She could no longer hide it. The amount of death and destruction she had witnessed, and now the destruction of a droid she had known well. There wasn't enough strength left in her to continue to hide. "I'll report this..." she said softly and moved past Corwin once more.

What happened next caught Marienna entirely off guard. Before she could force her way passed him he had reached out, quite literally and pulled her into a warm embrace. Her eyes widened and body stiffened almost as though she had died and rigor had set in. Taking a moment to look up at his face, she softened, her body gradually becoming looser. It was a matter of moments, probably shorter than that before she had moved to wrap her arms around him, burying her head in his chest, she cried. Feeling free for just a moment to properly respond in the manner she had longed to, but had hidden. In this moment, he was not her superior, he was her friend. Someone who saw, and someone who wanted to help. In short order, Marienna had managed to pull herself back together. Corwin's assurances that they would retrieve KV were enough to begin to dry her tears as the two bodies parted.

As she left the room one of the few remaining troopers stopped, looking rather curiously at her before speaking. "Lt. Beren?" He inquired. Marienna wiped her tear stained cheeks and looked up. "We need to clean up..." She spoke softly, turning to Corwin who had been following just behind her. "And then we can dig into this." Marienna seemed calmer now than she had just a few moments ago.

Peeling the uniform from her flesh she made her way to the small shower, and allowed herself to slide down the wall, water on, audibly sobbing allowing the blood and dirt that caked to her skin slowly circle the drain. Corwin couldn't help but find the look on the confused trooper's face perplexing. It was possible the trooper had been mistaken, but enough to mention it to the normally thorny Lt. Beren? That seemed significant.

He didn't get a chance to remark. Marieena's commands to the trooper surprised him. Only moments before she had been falling apart, yet she was able to keep her wits about her and still know what needed to be done. He respected the hell out of that.

"We need to clean up..." She spoke softly, turning to Corwin who had been following just behind her. "And then we can dig into this."

The trooper paused a moment, looking to Corwin for any sign of disapproval before turning briskly and heading to his newly appointed task.

She turned back to face him, her face cool and stoic once more. Aside from the smears of grime on her cheeks, there was no evidence of the massive crack from which her emotions had been pouring out.
Corwin offered a nod, he didn't know if he would be holding up as well under the same circumstances. He was grateful from the distraction from the earlier carnage, though he felt ashamed it came at the cost of KV-2.

He watched Marienna leave their office headed back for their barracks before he hurried to catch up to the trooper they had spoken with. He had some questions that needed answers.

An helmet-less infantry Sergeant and trooper were waiting outside Marienna's room when she emerged. They straightened and the female Sergeant with close cropped blonde hair and a scar along her jaw line saluted. She was slightly shorter than the trooper, and the same height as Marienna in her glistening white armor and orange pauldron.
"Lieutenant Fischer requested you be escorted to him once you were cleaned up ma'am."

The Sergeant lead the way and the trooper followed behind the pair, both seemed to be watching for something as they made their way out into the street and toward the Administration building.

The Administration building their office was in was crowded compared to the emptiness of the rest of the compound. The guards and patrols around the compound had been doubled and everyone had been quietly alerted to keep their eyes out for anyone suspicious.

As Marienna emerged from her quarters, she was caught off guard by the sounds of voices calling out to her. For just a moment the sounds were muffled, almost as though she were in a haze. It took her a second to come to terms and actually process what the Sergeant was saying.

"Lieutenant Fischer requested you be escorted to him once you were cleaned up ma'am."

Escorted? Rather strange, Marienna thought, although she understood that Lt. Fischer rarely acted without a reason. Was she in some sort of trouble? Unlikely, even for her record. Could this have been related to what that one trooper had said? Something about feeling like he had seen her just moments before, in a place she couldn't possibly have been in? She automatically responded with a salute of her own, a complete reaction without any thought. This was their way. Marienna found herself nodding in acknowledgment before providing verbal confirmation.

"Of course Sergeant, lead the way." Marienna waited as the Sergeant moved out ahead, and Marienna followed closely behind, gloved hands intertwined behind her back she stood tall. The two were opposite images, or images in juxtaposition. The Sergeant with close cropped blonde hair, a scar on her face all encased in that signature white armor. By contrast, Marienna was slender in a well tailored grey uniform, pale but perfect skin, and that long black hair spilling over her shoulders, bouncing ever so slightly with each step she took forward. "Care to tell me what this is all about, Sergeant?" Marienna asked, though her tone suggested it was more of a command, than an actual request. It would, perhaps be reassuring to some to see how quickly her icy demeanor had returned. Lt. Beren was Lt. Beren through and through. She was determined to pull herself back to order, after what she determined was a rather unseemly display of emotion.

As the small group continued toward the Admin building, she could feel the eyes of the fully helmeted trooper behind her. He was watching her every move, but there was something else, as though he were looking for something specific. Looking down, there was a smile that crossed her face, though she made certain that none present would see it. Corwin had figured it out, she was certain of it. Returning her gaze straight ahead, the smile faded and the group was ever closer to their destination.

In the mindless act of forward motion, Marienna was brought back through her memory banks to an earlier assignment. A fateful one. The drop ship lowered through grey and clouded skies, the heat from the massive open lava flows on the surface below radiated through the walls. The team had been warned that the environment would be harsh, but none of them were truly prepared for exactly how difficult this would be. "Helmets on!" A voice called, and Lt. Beren, though at that point not possessing of that rank did as ordered and placed the protective helmet over her head. The exosuits the team wore were bulky, to be put nicely, and rendered movement somewhat awkward if not outright challenging. The moment the cargo doors opened, a wave of heat ripped through the cabin. The air before them was dancing, swaying in the intense temperature.

As the team exited the ship, the reality set in. They were standing before a massive sinking refinery. The stories of Mustafar were all true, it was as close to hell as one could possibly get. The facility was easily over a hundred years old, clearly constructed by the Techno Union at the height of their power before the war. There were precious few structures remaining on this tiny, desolate rock. The jagged obsidian path to the entrance was narrow with molten hot lava slowly flowing in a river along either side. The mission was simple, get in, survey the remains of the facility, determine what could be salvaged and send in the recovery teams.

However, what was most imposing wasn't the planet itself, it was what else lurked not too far from them. High above them, just behind the facility on the edge of a cliff and imposing lava fall was a structure still under construction. Here they stood, working in the shadows of one of Lord Vader's personal projects, his own fortress. The details of the project remained a mystery, details that Marienna knew she would never understand. As they entered the refinery, it was clear that it had reached the end of its life. The Empire wouldn't even need to dismantle the place, whatever they didn't want would eventually be consumed by the planet itself. As the group set about their work, Marienna noted a team of droids already inside, humming, buzzing, scanning. They were passing data back and forth about the structural integrity, the news likely wasn't good.

It was here that they met for the first time under the threat of certain death. With pieces of debris falling from high above, she watched almost in slow motion as a beam came hurtling toward the ground and toward one of the droids. Marienna jumped into action, and moving as quickly as she could, she scooped up the little one, to a chorus of frantic beeping, whirring. It was only a moment later that the intense pain of the beam slicing through her shoulder overwhelmed her. "Better me than you, little one." She remarked, hissing through the pain. She smiled and returned the droid to the ground. "Now what are you called?" She inquired, her eyes scanning the surface of the droid for damage, he had held up well. "KV 2? Well, let's get me fixed up and back to work. Sound like a plan?" The droid beeped in happiness, and followed her back to the ship where a reprimand surely awaited.

Marienna came back to her reality as they reached the Admin building, the Lt. moved inside and reported to Corwin as was expected of her. "Signed, sealed and delivered, Lieutenant Fischer." She remarked rather flatly, as her escorts now remained by her side.

At the command, the sergeant turned rigidly and marched purposefully down the corridor of the barracks, not glancing back to check on her charge. They paused a moment at the exit as the sergeant took a quick glance down each direction of the road before continuing on.

The sergeant slowed slightly, falling back to nearly beside Lt. Beren, she didn't look at the officer, as she continued scanning their nearly deserted surroundings. A hand full of troopers patrolled in threes and fours and seemed to take note of the group's passing as they made their way across the compound.

"Lieutenant Fischer wanted to ensure there were no, misunderstandings," She informed quietly in a diplomatic tone. "All personnel are to be escorted around the compound until the sweep is completed. As per your orders."

The edge of a scowl that pulled at the sergeant's scar was just visible when her head swept right, and toward Lt. Beren. It was hard to tell what had the woman upset, the guard duty or the fact there had been an intruder in the compound right under their noses.

The sergeant lead the way, only pausing briefly to acknowledge the guards to the admin building before continuing inside. The helmeted troopers guarding the door seemed to regard Lt Beren as she entered the building, but it could just have been her imagination making their heads seem to turn.

In the common hub beyond the entrance that the halls to each corridor containing offices began, Corwin stood surrounded by three other technical Lieutenants, Sub-Lieutenants and a nearly a dozen sergeants and infantry squad leaders. Some wore white plastoid armor, and others grey or black uniforms, it appeared to be all the remaining ranking members still in the compound.

Corwin stopped speaking when they entered, and all eyes turned to the new comers. Lt Fischer seemed like he had only taken a few moments to wash the dirt from his face and dust off his uniform and dived right in. His smile had faded to nearly a shadow of it's normal beam, but it perked slightly at the sight of Marienna. The tailing trooper had remained outside.

"Excellent, now we are all here. Thank you Sergeant Grag." Corwin remarked and the scared woman offered a ridged nod as he continued.
"As many of you know, a convoy was attacked north east of the compound. Both Major Norton and Captain Geslain were killed in what we believe was a target attack. Captain Winters is acting commander for the time being, he is still on site overseeing, so he has authorized the next most senior officer to oversea the compound until he returns. Lieutenant Beren will be my second in command until
Captain Winters returns and I am relived."

The room was silent, but the faces on the gathered imperials said all that needed to be. Some clearly had not known how sever the attack had been.

"Sub-Lieutenant Spears," Corwin addressed a younger thin man who nearly jumped at being called out before straightening. "Coordinate the sweep of the compound with Sergeant Grag, her experience will be beneficial. Any personnel you need are at your disposal. Leave no stone un-turned and verify all security documents. We are dealing with a native shape shifter. No one is to be moving around the compound alone. The goal is capture, but take no risks."
The young officer offered a quick salute and eyed the sergeant nervously as he turned and made his way out of the officer with the scarred woman in tow.

No one seemed surprised at the revelation they were hunting shape shifting Gurlanins, so it seemed likely it had been discussed before Marianna had arrived, and possibly the reason for the looks they had received en-route.

"Lieutenant Andrews." He addressed a serene black clad stocky woman a head shorter than himself. "Please run a search grid around the compound, look for anything out of the ordinary, they could have a lookout nearby."
The woman offered a nod and with a gesture a trio of squad leaders also clad in the black uniforms of the navy followed her out.

"Senior Agent Cross," Fischer addressed an ordinary looking tan fleshed woman with warm brown eyes and well kept hair pulled back in a burnt orange bun clad in a matching grey uniform to them, but with the rank bars colored to show intelligence branch of the technical services. "As ranking intelligence branch member, I trust the investigation is well in your team's capabilities."

"Yes." The woman replied stoically. "I would like to interview you and Lieutenant Beren before we examine the scene."
"Very well." Corwin replied. "The rest of you have your duties, see to them. Dismissed."
The few remaining in the hub cleared out, heading back to their offices or departing the building to head back to their posts. A pair wearing the bars of lesser intelligence agents appeared to be readying equipment and unpacking small cases.

"I would like to speak to you first Lieutenant Beren." Agent Cross informed, her eyes seeming catlike now that that gazed at her, searching for prey. "I have secured on office we can used." She gestured down a corridor opposite the wing that held the logistics office.

As the Sergeant guided Marienna through the compound to the meeting place, she spoke of misunderstandings. Marienna couldn't help but take the slightest umbrage at the choice of words. What misunderstandings? Had she been referring to the incident with the trooper from earlier? The simplest explanation was often the correct one, perhaps he had truly been confused. Nevertheless Lt. Beren found a deep unpleasantness in her 'guardian' if one could call the Sergeant that. It was rare that Marienna encountered individuals who were colder than she was but then again, rare, did not mean never.

As they entered the common hub, Marienna reached the pinnacle of her discomfort, all talking had ceased and all eyes were on her, even if it was for just a moment. Like a machine the young woman moved to offer a salute, this was second nature now. She then found herself moving as quickly as possible to an open spot where she would not obstruct anything or anyone. From there it was simple, her only task was to stand at ease and listen for further instructions. The room was filled with soldiers, troopers, officials of varying rank and position. Marienna's eyes darted about the room, scanning each of the faces and filing them away. A few were familiar, while others were not. Without Lt. Fischer having to resume his speech she understood what was happening here. They were assembled to get to the bottom of what exact happened, between the bombing and the break in, there was no shortage of tasks to be completed.

Could it have been possible that they, Fischer and Beren were the highest ranking officers left in the compound? Of course, though for a moment she wished she didn't believe it. The number of imperial troopers or officers on the planet was not staggeringly high, and those who wielded the real power were investigating the site of the bombing. The Lt. found herself looking at Corwin rather oddly, or perhaps more with curiosity as he had mentioned that for the duration of Captain Winter's absence she would serve as second in command. Command posts were not ideal for her, she would rather spend her time focused in on the work she enjoyed doing. Was she capable? Absolutely. Was she reluctant? Even more so.

Then he said the magic words, Shapeshifters. Suddenly everything made sense. The native Gurlanin population were indeed capable of such things. The Gurlanins were a notoriously proud people who had historically been oppressed by whichever government outstretched its hands and gripped Qiilura tightly. Republic or Empire made very little difference to them, though she supposed at least they faired better before the Empire returned to claim this goldmine of agriculture. Marienna began to pour over whatever knowledge of them and this planet she could. According to the most recent census data she read, the population had greatly diminished. Diminished here being code for a great many of the Gurlanin's were killed in their attempts to stave off the Empire, or worse, had been sold into some form of slavery in another dank and dismal part of the galaxy. All reports indicated that at present, the population was largely docile and kept out of sight. Of course, this kind of activity could turn into a witch hunt, with everyone seeing a Gurlanin next to them in the guise of their friends.

Naturally this brought the trooper back to mind. All of her doubts now cast aside it became manifest. He did see her. Or he thought he saw her, when in actuality it had been a Gurlanin that taken her form. Marienna came to the conclusion that the choice to impersonate her was likely not a coincidence. Lt. Beren had access to what they wanted to steal, but even more so, she was cold, staunch, largely unfeeling, never smiled. These traits made it less likely for others to stop her, to attempt to engage in idle conversation. Marienna was a woman who wanted to get something done, and so she did with little distraction. This too, meant that they had been watched, for who knows how long. Likely since she and Corwin arrived. She wondered now if the bomb had simply been a distraction, a means of pulling the majority of the forces out of the base and onto the dirt roads. This now explained the escort and what was about to happen next.

As team by team left the common hub, off to their assignments as dictated by Corwin, the only ones who remained in the room worked for Imperial intelligence. Marienna knew enough that when they showed up, it wasn't a good thing. Lt. Beren stared blankly at Agent Cross, her eyes having long fallen away from Corwin. A small part of her wished to protest, to refuse this little chat, but she recognized that would be a poor decision. She only brought herself to nod and moved down to the hallway as directed. "Of course." She spoke firmly, with a characteristic lack of emotion behind her words, however brief they may have been.

The office she had been lead to was less of an office and more of a traditional interrogation chamber. Or at least this is what it felt like now that she was present in the moment. "So, are just chatting or are you interrogating me?" Again, there was no malice behind her tone, no harsh words or particularly raised voice. It was all matter of fact. Marienna understood now that it was likely she was a suspect, at least, in part.

They entered the stark room with only a small table and two chairs as furniture and Agent Cross gestured to one of the chairs as she closed the door behind them.
"That depends if you are going to be forthcoming with answers or not." She answered the question as she had a million times before in a casual tone that carried the faintest hint of a threat if you watched her eyes narrow as she sat down across from Marienna.

Producing a small data pad from a pocket, she placed it on the table in front of her and tapped a few keys.
"This is Agent Cross interviewing Lieutenant Beren." She said to the recording device on the table as she made herself comfortable on her chair. Her brown eyes seemed to bore into Marienna, look right through the woman.
"Would you please tell me about your morning Lieutenant? Do be thorough."

Agent Cross listened silently as Marienna relayed the happenings of the morning, here eyes not leaving the Lieutenant. When she finished, Agent Cross finally spoke.

"On a previous positing your transport was shot down and crashed. What planet was that on again?" Agent Cross expected the question to put the woman off balance. She was interested to see what it would shake loose.
