So, there are schools on the ground, but only up to the eighth year. Interestingly enough, the age of steam was the last time one could get a complete education on all subjects.

Upper class would still have those fancy schools - boarding schools, most like. Military academies - someone's got to lead those armies, direct those fighting clanks, or pilot those skyships.

Then there are the service academies and guild halls - police, firemen, merchants, bankers, butchers, bakers, plumbers, steamfitters.

Probably most important though, would be the Secret Orders (Freemasons, Odd Fellows, etc), Social and Gentlemen Clubs. For some, the gentlemen clubs were a second home, a place in the city. It might be where Sukone's character stays when they're in the city. Maids to tend to the rooms, fine dining, gambling, smoking/reading rooms and the like. (Newspapers, approved works of fiction and treatises that re-enforce the social orders - and in a way, a guilty pleasure they could lord over the lower classes.)

If you've seen Downton Abbey, may be familiar with staff rooms and steep servant stairs to allow the staff to travel around the homes unseen as they do their errands.

Perhaps Luna works at this gentlemen's club as a maid?

Something to think about. She would get Sunday mornings for church (assuming church exists) and one day a week off.


Something else to think about - since the Higher Order runs things, what if - and I do mean if - what if they have all this advanced tech? Computers, transceivers, etc. Sukone may have a small device he carries that like a pager. It's tuned to a specific frequency and rattles out morse code (maybe he can send back?). He can consult a code book to see what his instructions are - which might include checking in using a secret transceiver. A video ansible, inside a secret room that can only be accessed from his room or a hidden passage that lets out into an alley?

The Higher Order controls publishing - only those works they approve of can be printed.

Perhaps one of the jobs they do is to find samizdat - underground books and pamplets that get passed around? All of it unauthorized literature. Of course, it doesn't mean the police and the Higher Order agents aren't reading it themselves? Even passing it on?

I fully approve of the secret society and gentleman's club ideas, especially with sukone's character and your character tying into it. Maybe they could meet there!
I'm a bit hesitant about the electronics idea. If we get this to actually be a group rp, I don't want people to be mistaking the idea that modern technology exists when instead, when it's more like a radio receiver or a Morse code box. Steampunk does include some "futuristic" technology, though, so if these objects are written well, I'll approve.
Yes, yes, you've got it on the nose. The Middle Class of the Ground would be an excellent class to publish these unauthorized writings on a larger scale, considering they're the major working class and they might even work in a paper or typewriter industry. They could sell them to the other classes on the ground or just pass them out to bring awareness (which sparks drama and turmoil for the Protective Forces and such authorities to clean it up).

It's been changed as education's no longer available even to the Upper Class.

OJT's okay for some professions, but it can lack consistancy. If you're police, firefighter, a doctor, surgeon, lawyer or some other professional, you want them to have more than just some OJT, they need some structured schooling.


Accountants, merchants, and even shopkeepers will need to know how to do sums, otherwise how will anyone know what they owe each other, owe the workers, or what they owe the revenue agents? This empire isn't going to run on fumes. Taxes must be collected. Government officials and agencies paid.


As to military, keep in mind there are likely to be riots to be put down. Different areas might not have a floating city to mind them. And it's a way to keep people's attention on the border and not what's going on around them.

I fully approve of the secret society and gentleman's club ideas, especially with sukone's character and your character tying into it. Maybe they could meet there!

Keep in mind that printing presses are all under the control of the Higher Order, so there's not going to be a stack of books or pamplets being printed up on the side - someone will want to account what happened to the paper and ink when the police come calling.


Any books are going to be few in number, either hand-written or typed, hand-bound, and passed along from person to person. They'll also be told how long they'll have to read the book - it could be a week, it could be a night.


For some people, it's going to be the thrill of the forbidden. For some, it may be just a decent read.

@Sabes; @SUKONE-P; - updated my character sheet to fit in with working at a gentlemen's club. We should probably come up with a name for it. Perhaps Prometheus Club or The Promethean Society?

I was thinking that she also is on one of the distribution trees for reading samizdat or whatever they're calling it. Possible a fledgling writer, as she owns a typewriter now. Has a notebook with various bits in it, like hobo signs and the like.
