He noticed her suspicious look and decided to press the issue. The more he knew about this the better. As she began to play with the straps of her strange-looking bag, he briefly wondered what was inside. Perhaps a clue as to her mysterious origins.

“Not entirely. It makes no sense, I…” she trailed off. “This shouldn’t be possible?” Ah, so we are working within the realm of impossibility. That makes things a bit easier.

“What shouldn’t be possible?” He hoped he was coming off as innocently curious, rather than hungry for information.

Isabel looked at him, suddenly feeling loneliness wash over her. How on earth - or wherever she had ended up - was she supposed to explain the thoughts racing through her head to this creature? She was far from ready to come to terms with it, but maybe this was possible after all. The famous words of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle echoed in her head: When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. The multiverse theory was one of the most improbable ones she knew... But it was, in fact, the only one left. And the implications were tremendously far-reaching.

She took a deep breath and briefly closed her eyes to collect herself. "...I-I must have made a mistake," she said softly, hardly above a whisper. "Some... parameter that was off. A miscalculation. Some apparent truths that we clearly did not take into account, I..." Her brow furrowed as she thought, and then she opened her eyes and looked at him again. "I can't believe I'm saying this but I think I was teleported here."

There’s the ticket, he thought. He put on a shocked face.

    “Teleported? How?”

She let out a stuttering sigh and absentmindedly tangled her hand into her hair again. "My-... Our machine, it's in my basement, and Andre tried to... oh god," she murmured, her eyes searching for something to hold on to. She suddenly felt faint and unsteady on her feet.

So there is a machine, he thought. If she can create another, then I would have the greatest power at my fingertips than any Jedi or Sith before me!

He suppressed a mad cackle. “Would it be possible for you to build another machine? With the right materials, I’m sure you could return home.” And leave me with a machine capable of transporting through dimensions.

"I should have all my notes in my bag," she said softly, gesturing to her backpack. "But it took us years to build it." That sentence had a lot more despair laced through it. She slowly sank to the ground and put her head between her knees. The realisation that she was truly, irrevocably stuck here was getting to her and making her head spin.

Kavik’s excitement turned to disappointment behind his mask. Years. Years! The realization seemed to strike her at the same time, as she sank to her knees. He placed a hand on her shoulder.

“Let’s not give up just yet. I’ll consult some star charts. Who knows, maybe we’re only a hop, skip, and a jump from your home.”

The warmth of his touch made her momentarily tear up, and she tried not to think about the amount of fingers on that hand. She swiped at her eyes and looked up at Kavik, taking a shaking breath. "...Can you hop, skip and jump to other dimensions?" she asked softly. "Cause I fear that's what happened."

That gave him pause. Teleportation was one thing, but accessing different dimensions was an entirely different thing. On one hand, the idea of multiversal travel would open up a lot of doors for him. On the other hand, he didn’t fancy getting stuck in an alien realm with no way of getting home. Oh, yeah.

He opened his mouth to speak, but the words died in his throat. All that came out was an odd, questioning grunt.

Isabel bit down on her lips and nodded. "That seems about right," she murmured, looking down at her feet. So that was it, then. She was stuck in this world that she knew absolutely nothing about. Building a new machine seemed rather unattainable right now. No, she had to focus on surviving.

She closed her eyes briefly and took a deep breath. She suddenly realised how lucky she was that she had ended up somewhere with an oxygen-rich atmosphere. Somewhere she could breathe. Gods, she easily could have died... She opened her eyes again. Speaking of deadly situations...

"What was after us before?" she asked Kavik, looking out towards the forest they had come through. "Should we get to a safer place?"
