Default Lost Child in an Amusement Park

Hey everyone! Never role-played before so looking for an 'adult' to show me the ropes. I do some writing whether it be a world of my own creation (usually a medieval setting) or the occasional fanfic. Can anyone point me to a good ride to start on?

    Welcome logic_ally!

You mentioned that you write, so this will help you greatly, because mostly what roleplaying is about is characters.

Most games start with a setting - it could be a fantasy village or it could be a tramp freighter transporting goods across an ocean or between planets.

First, you need to create a character that fits the setting - you may start off as a blacksmith or one of the town guards if it's a fantasy game, or perhaps an engineer or pilot if it's a scifi game. The person running the game will provide a character sheet for you to fill out to describe your character and what your role will be in this game setting.

I see a lot of background characters that people want to play - waiters, bystanders and the like. Instead, you want to be active, an adventurer. If you're a mechanic, you're the one that goes down with the landing party ready to wade in with your tools to help break into the facility and to hit people with your tools when it's time to fight.

Once your character is approved to join the In Character thread, you read what's going on and see how others are responding, then you post your character's response.

Now, most of our games here work under the consent rule - player a announces that character A is going to punch character B. Player B then decides if their character B is going to dodge or take the hit - or do something else. This works best when players accept that their characters are going to get hurt in a fight. Someone who's completely untouchable becomes completely boring. If they can dodge all the blows, the reason why should be in their character sheet.

Some games are limited consent, where you allow for some interaction between the characters by the players. Like if Character A decides they're going to grab character's b hands and shake it. As this is not an attack, character A can do it and player b can decide how they're going to respond. However, if their response is an attack, then the start the attack and leave Player A to decide Character A's fate.

Table consent is where you roll the result of each action to determine if it works and how well, usually based on a table or list.
