Default [M] Lifetime of Discoveries (Ashen + giraffes)

Rune braced herself against the wooden wall of her cabin as the ship rocked suddenly. She immediately shook her head in irritation at the crew that ran this ship. The Poison Pearl used to be a wonderful contraption run by a stellar crew. That was years ago however and Rune didn't get much of a say in who was in this new crew considering she was a women, a young one at that. It wasn't easy getting respect from pirates on a good day. Most days out at sea were not good days.

It must be early. Rune thought to herself. She could tell just by the sounds of the ship. There were voices but not the usual amount that was the entire crew. Rune looked to the corner of her small room at her companion that lay on some torn blankets. "What do think, Rudder? You ready." The Belgian Malinois stood immediately at her owners command.

Rune quickly dressed herself in slightly warn clothes, her usual dress. A pair of slightly dirty slightly baggy jeans and an old white shirt that wasn't really white anymore. She braided her long brown hair and tossed it over one side of her shoulder.

She grabbed for the door, Rudder right at her heals, and opened the door a crack before the smell of rum practically knocked her off her feet. She took a second and covered her nose. I don't know how I haven't gotten used to this smell yet. She thought. The ship smelled like sweat and rum, always.

She made her way up to the top deck and now could asses what that sudden jerk of the ship was about.

"Sirus?" She called out to the tall lanky man that stood at the ships wheel. The man responded with a head nod to Rune. Sirus was one of the crew members Rune did like. They had become friends since the new crew joined, which he was a part of.

"What was all that about?" She asked, referring to the moment she almost was knocked on her ass inside her cabin. She looked to the bow of the ship and stopped to admire the sunrise for a split second while she waited for Sirus' answer.

"Yes ma'am. We-we have spotted land ahead. It's not on our map. Captain said to check it out." Sirus responded. Rune just nodded her head slightly at his answer. Why do we have to go to this tiny piece of land that's not on the map? It's not even big enough to be noted. Why- She stopped her thought process there. It didn't matter why. She wasn't going to get a reason. The Captain was a man of very few words. Mostly because he had his throat slit years ago by rival pirates and that for sure did some damage.

"We could use some help." Sirus said. "The crew isn't up y-"

"Yea I know. I got it." Rune said. Sirus didn't have to explain the crew wasn't up yet because there was a whole three people manning the ship so far which is probably why it jerked around like a dog shaking it's prey. With a sigh Rune went down the stairs and over to the other crew members, helping them raise the sails and actually get started in the direction of the speck of land in the distance. She knew they wouldn't find anything there. They were far away, yes, but this island still wasn't very big so what could it possible hold that had any interest to her?

The sun had not yet woken by the time Kinta sat up in his cot, awake and alert. Uneasiness spread from his stomach through his whole body, and he tried to remember what he’d eaten the previous day. His meals had all been normal, but he couldn’t shake the anxiety that came with this bad feeling. At any rate, his stomachache would keep him from sleeping anymore, so he climbed out of his cot, grabbed his spear, and beckoned to his companion to start the day.

Blind blue eyes blinked up at him, drowsy and irritated at having been woken up early. The small dragon yawned loudly before slowly getting onto its legs. Despite its weakened state, the dragon still had enough energy to sass its human, and it turned its nose up at Kinta. The child rolled his eyes, but he patted the dragon on the head. This was enough to placate the creature, who made a content noise and fluttered its broken wings in response. “Come, Anyo,” Kinta said, nudging the dragon to follow him. “Let us hunt. I hunger.” Though the dragon was tired, the sound of breakfast motivated it to shake the sleepiness from its legs and trot after Kinta, a smile on its face.

Kinta had been living on his own for such a long time now that finding his own food was hardly a feat. He made sure to only hunt and forage just what he and Anyo could eat and leave the rest, just like his elders had taught all his brothers when he’d been young. Overharvesting would kill their small island, they’d said, and Kinta didn’t know what he would do then. Even if there was a whole world out there to explore, Kinta didn’t know how to get to it. His island was all he had, and he intended to protect it.

Once he’d caught something big enough for a meal, Kinta dragged his prize through the forest and to the sandy shore, where he set it beside a fire pit. He kindled the flames with a few branches he’d collected on the way here, and as the fire grew higher, he took a knife to his catch. The pelt was matted and dirty, so it wouldn’t be useful for anything, so Kinta tossed that to the ground. The meat he set by a rock nearby, his mouth watering at the meal it would make.

Anyo sat next to him, hungrily sniffing at the meat and pawing at whatever pieces fell too close to it. Kinta playfully swatted the dragon away with a laugh. “Patience, Anyo,” he told the poor creature, who sniffled dramatically. Finally, when Kinta had prepared the meat, he tossed it onto a metal pan and let the smell fill his nose.

While their breakfast cooked, Kinta’s gaze fell to the shore. He wondered, not for the first time, just what was out there beyond the rolling waves. His elders had told him of the distant societies of people in silly clothing who built houses tall and sturdy, and he even remembered some of their customs that he’d found the funniest. Kinta wanted to meet those people, to see what their world was like, but he couldn’t. Even if he magically learned how to swim, he’d never get far enough to reach other land. Even if it was an impossibility, Kinta dreamed of the day he could step away from this island of ghosts and see what else the world had to offer him.

When he determined his meal was cooked enough to eat, Kinta removed it from the fire and tossed half of it to Anyo. “It is hot,” he warned, but the dragon heeded no warning. It gulped down its food in one bite and choked on it. Kinta sighed, though he smiled at the foolish dragon. He patted the creature’s back, avoiding the raw spots where his off-white scales had been torn off, and when Anyo stopped choking, Kinta finally started eating his own meal.

But this time, when he turned to look again at the dark horizon, he didn’t just see the endless ocean. Out there, in the distance, there was a massive wooden structure cradled by the waves. It was adorned in flags and ropes and weapons. Kinta was up in an instant, his breakfast forgotten. He squinted, trying to make out what the strange thing was. It looked like a floating house, and he wondered what kind of people, if any, were on it. It looked like—

It looked like the house that had brought those pirates six years ago. The pirates who had massacred his family and killed his people. The pirates who had left him all alone.

Kinta backed away from the shore, his heart pounding. Maybe this was what his stomach was trying to warn him about. He took refuge in some reeds a little distance from the fire, and he watched as the ship grew nearer and nearer.
Thanks to Craze for the beautiful Bravely set!
